SHIPPING CRATE.
uvmummf mm1) JULY s1, 1905A Pff! wi hmmm Tixlmulxlor UNrrED STATES JOHN H. ll TvBAR, OF
rarENr OFFICE.
DENVER, COLORADO.
SHIPPING-CRATE,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 27, 1906.
Application Bled July 31, 1905. Serie! Bo. 271,983.
I ra o, havejnvented ccrtainnew and useful Improvementsl in Shipping-Crates; and I do herebydeclare the followin v to be a full, clear, and exact description of t le invention, such as willenable-others skilled in the art to whiei it a prtaind ty iake and use the same. he object of my invention iste providep hhipping-crate which 'may be veryg/jieaply manufactured and the parts compri ngthe same readilg'separated, and thus permit the crate to be shipped in a knocked-down or folded condition.
A further object is to enable the shi per to have the crate returned to him in suelishape that it will oocup the smallest amount of space, and thus re uce the cost of return shipment.
'The details of mv invention will be fully set forth in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention complete, showing the middle artition as sli'htlyraised. Fig. 2 is a top pllan view on a slightly-reduced scale. Fig. 3 is a detail showing one of the side sections in elevation. Fig. 4 is a detail showing one of the end scctions removed` For convenience the detail of construction involved in my inventief will be designated by numerals, of which l indicates the bottomsection of my knockd own crate, which is preferablyformed of suitable sheet metal, though any desired material may be used.
If'sheet metal is em loyed to form the. hottom section l, I pre er to bend the edges thereof upward, so as to provide the side flanges 2 and the end flanges or seetiolis 3, r
the ends of which are preferably left extended and bent. around into en agement with' the side sections, as indicated y the numeral 4,`the ends of the side and end sections being pern'lanvntly secured together hya rivet 5, therebyiroviding a cup-like section for the bottom designed to receive the side and end walls, as will be hereinafter made clear.
The sido walls pro ier, (i, of my improved crate are nach provided at nach end with a plurality ol' pl'nlaeralilj' integral clamping-lil gers 7 and whinh arr rar-'ily formed in the shea-t mobil eompi'lsuq Iln sido sorti' ns by properly lurking the slib :is will he vovions by reim-mire to Figs. 1 and 3. The fingers or clamping-sections 7 are. bent at right angles near their univr portions, as more clearly shown in Fig. 3, while the fingers or clam section H parallel with the section 7, when the angles, thus disposing the extreme ends 0f Veach other and leaving the entire fin ers or clampin -sections 'i' and S substantial y parallel wit n each other throughout their entire length. The object in thus disposing each alternato finger 7 and 8 is to provide a seat for the reception of the end sections 10, each of which is provided with a rirht-angled in wardl -directed extension or llange ll, designe to be received between the clampingsections 7 and 8, as shown in Fig. 2.
By the construction just-described itis obvious that the end sections may be very 'quickly entered into ositionb droppin the same outward, so t atthe ange an the outer ends of the end sections will be received between the fingers 7 and 8,' thus insuring that said parts will be reliably held in eopcrative relationship until the end sections are Withdrawn. A lid-cover 12 is also provided and suitably hinged to the upper edge of one of the. side sections 6, as indicated by the numeral 13, the free edge of the' lid beirg provided with the lock I4, whereby the ii may be reliably secured in a closed position during shipment.
One or more partition-walls 15 will be found desirable in separatin the interior of my folding crate and thus t the same for shi ping eggs and other like products.
lili orderV to reliably .secure the partition against casual displacement, the vertical guidcways 16 are preferabl able piece of sheet metal andr provided withintegral ears 1 7,whereb;,' the guides may be readily anchored in position b Vsuitable rivets, as will be readily understoo Various modifications may he adopted in constructing the several parts of my invention without de arting from the s irit thereof, and there ore desire to com rehend all substantial equivalents and substitutes.
A When it is desired toreturn my im rovcd crate to the consigner after the goo s have been delivcred,'the end sections 10 maybe lifted upward, when the side Wall carrying thv lock may be dropped into the bottom seconter end of the {nger S is then bent at right both the fingers suhstmitiallsY parallel with' nig-sections H are first bent inward, as in cated by the nunwral 9, so as to dispose th formed of a suit;
tion, with the ngers 7 and 8 pointing upward. The end sections and artition 1.5 may then be dro ped in place, w en the wall 6, to which the id is hinged, may be folded down upon said end sections and partition and the lid 12 folded back upon the side section, to which it is secured, and a suitable Cord or rope passed around the parts, thus holding them reliably in place disposed within a small compass and occupying a minimum amount of space.
My improved crate may be very quickly restored to a condition ready for receiving goods for shipment, it being understood that when eggs are to be placed within a crate the usual egg-holding paper receptacle may be em loye ,asis common. u
i hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A collapsible shipping-crate comtprising a. bottom section having side and end anges',
side sections mounted utpon the bottom section, parallel series of lngers integral with each end of each slde section and extending at right angles therefrom, and end sections 25 having right-angle extensions at their ends adapted to be seated between the series of fingers and the side sections.
2. A collapsible crate comprising a bottom section, side sections mounted thereon, an-4 3o gular lingers at each end of and integral with each side section, said fingers being disposed in parallel rows, the end sections having end fianges adapted to be inserted between the rows of fingers at each end of the side sections. 35
