MOTOR FOR CHURNS, PUMPS, 81.0..
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 13, 1906.
Application filed March 17, 1905. Serial No- 250,655.
useful Improvements in Motors for Churns,
Pumps, &c.; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification This invention relates to newand useful improvements in motors adapted for actuating churns or other devices and it consists in the provision of a train of gear-wheels which are actuated by spring-power and so arranged that the speed at which it is desired to have the churn operate may be easily regulated by shifting boxings carrying bearings in which is mounted a shaft having stepped gearwheels thereon. Y
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and in combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the views, in which I Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved apparatus, and Fig. 2 1s a top plan view.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the frame of the apparatus supported on suitable legs, and B is a shaft on which the two gearwheels C and D are mounted. A ratchetwheel E is also mounted upon said shaft and is adapted to be engaged by a pawl F, which is pivotally mounted upon one of said wheels and is held in engagement with the ratchetwheel E by means of a spring H.
I designates a second gear-wheel mounted upon a shaft 1, and K designates a pinion fixed to the shaft 1 and in mesh with the teeth of the gear-wheel C.
J designates a gear-wheel fixed upon a shaft J and is in mesh with the teeth of the gearwheel D, while 0 designates a crank to the shaft J, whereby the wheel J fixed may be rotated for the purpose of winding the spring Q, which actuates the shaft B and the wheels carried thereby. N designates a gear-wheel which is mounted upon a shaft N, suitably journaled in the frame A of the apparatus, and M designates a disk fixed to the shaft N and carrying a pin M, to which a pitman R is pivoted at one end, the other end of said pitman being connected to a pin R, carriedby the stem S of a churn T.
Referring toFig. 2 of the drawings will be seen a memberW, which rotates with and moves longitudinally upon the shaft N, and W designates an angle-lever which is secured to the hub portion of said member and is also pivotally connected to an operating-lever W the free end of which rests upon a support W. V designates a fixed stop member which is adapted to be engaged by the teeth of the member W for the purpose of holding the apparatus from operation.
The boxings(designated in the drawings by letter X) are adjustably mounted upon the beams A of the frame by means of bolts which are adapted to pass through the apertures X in said boxings. Each of the widened portions of the beams A (shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings) is provided with the additional apertures X and X which are in alinement with each other diagonally and positioned at different locations longitudinally upon said beam and provided so that when it is desired. to adjust the gear mechanism so that the intermediate of the three wheels Z may be thrown into mesh with the wheel N the box ings X may be moved laterally to bring the apertures X into registration with apertures X to receive bolts to fasten the apparatus in its adjusted position or to bring the apertures X into registration with apertures X to receive fastening-bolts should it be desired to throw the smallest of the three gear-wheels Z into mesh with the gear-wheel N.
From the foregoing it will be noted that governing mechanism is afforded by increasing or diminishing the resistance of the fanwheel, correspondingly as its speed is increased or diminished.
Y designates a shaft ournaled in bearings upon said boxings X and carries the graduated gear-wheels Z. To the end of the shaft Y is a pinion-wheel Y which is in engagement with a gear-wheel L, mounted upon the shaft L, which is journaled in suitable bearings L upon theadjustable boxings X.
Fixed to one end of the shaft L is a fanwheel L9, the blades of which are provided with extensible wings U, which carry bolts L engaging slots L in the wings of the fan L.
From the foregoing it will be observed that by the provision of the apparatus shown and described a sim le and eflicient motor mechanism is provi ed, the s eed and power of which may be readily a justed by shifting the bearings carrying the shafts Y and L to bring one or another of the gear-wheels Z in mesh with gear-wheel N.
While I have shown a particular form of apparatus illustrating my invention, it will be understood that I may vary the details of the same, if desired, without in any way departing from the s irit of the invention.
Having thus ful y described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi 1. Amotor apparatus for operating churns, &c., comprising a series of intermeshing gearwheels, a spring for operating the same, hori zontally-adjustable bearing-plates mounted upon the frame of the apparatus, a shaft mounted in said plates, graduated gearwheels fixed to said shaft, means for adjusting said plates, and clutch mechanism for throwing the apparatus into and out of operation, as set forth.
2. Amotor apparatus for operating churns, &c., comprising a frame, a spring-power-actuated shaft, a train of intermeshing gearwheels, a shaft mounted in suitable bearings and adapted to be connected to the handle of a churn, a clutch member splined to said shaft, an angle-bar pivotally connected to said clutch member, and a lever ivotally connected to said bar and to said ame, a fixed clutch member upon the frame adapted to be en aged by said sliding clutch, horizontallyad ustable platesmounted u on the frame of the ap aratus, a shaft carrie by said adjustable p ates, and raduated wheels rotating with said shaft wliich is mounted upon the adjustable plates, as set forth.
3. A motor apparatus for operating churns, &c., comprising a train of gear -wheels, a spring-bar for actuating the same, means for t rowing the device into and out of operation, horizontally-adjustable plates mounted upon the frame of the apparatus, a shaft carried by said plates, graduated gear-wheels upon said shaft, a second shaft mounted upon said plates and connections between the same and the shaft carrying said graduated wheels, said second wheel having an end projecting beyond the edges of the frame, and a longitudinally-movable bearing in which said projecting end is mounted, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. SKINNER.
Witnesses P. G. PETERS, T. B. ZUMVALT.
