Description

FRANCIS S. BAnsrrror TAUNTON," MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 821,242, dated August l18, 1868-...
IMPROVEMET IN 'NOZZLES 'OR PIPES| flitsv rlgebnle referat it in tigesr'trtias tant nn making mrt-'nf tigev sane.
T0 ALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE vPRESENTS WAY COMEI: A I
vBe it known thatI, FRANCIS SfB'ABBITT, of Taunton, in the county of Bristol, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful or improved Nozzlefor Hose-Pipe, Hydrants, Ste.; and I do hereby declare the lsame to be fully described in the following speciiication, 'and represented inl the accompanying drawings, of
Figurel is a side view, and A Figure 2 a longitudinal section of a nozzle constructed in accordance with my'in'vention.
Figure 3 4is aiside elevation ofthe screw-plug or valve.'
rI he object off'my invention-is to so construct the nozzle orfor the discharge of -wateigthat, by asimple and effective means,
discharging-mouth ofa hose-pipe or her v thc ilowage of water may be either entirely'.
' vchecked or the water be' caused to ilow out in a solid cylindrical form, or in divergent lines, forming spray, or in a hollow conc, whose base maybe of greater or less diameter, as may be desirable, thus performing the func tions ofthe two nozzles ordinarily used, viz, the sprinkler and the Lsolidlstream nozzle.
In the said drawings, A denotes the body portion ofthe nozzle, which is ahollow tube',-ma ing bore to receive a tapering screw-plug or valve', B. formed in it to screw on or connect with a male yscrew lattached to the hose-pipe or hydrant. body, and on opposite sides of the bore thereof,.I form two long chambers C C., which MTC ODPGIMG-.I junction with Atwo ports b b formed in opposite sides of the screw-plug B, as shown in.g2. The said's'erewy de with a taper- The large end of the said body has a femaley iserewa With'aft plug has its upper end solid. Apassage, c, leads' from the ports l b', and axially toward and through the:
smaller end of -thciplug B. Furthermore, the said screw-plug'has its frusto-conical part formed-or ground, sof'- as to lit closely to the interior surface-of the body A, and make a tight joint therewith. The saidplu'g :Baise` has a screw,.e, cut on its lower end to receive a milled nut, D, anda friction or checknut-,.E, which are arranged as seen in tig. 1. There is also formed on the periphery of the screw-plug a transverse recessor areal chamber j', the same being formed with shoulders orabutments g g', which areto operate with ai'st'udftori"projecticnl, 7L,
formed on the inner surface of the bore ofthe' body A, asseen in iig. 4, which is an .end 'View of the said body',
The object of the said stud end chamber is to limit the rotary movements of the Said screw-plug. A groove orl 4chamber,z', leads from thc chamherf across the threads ofthe screw, in manner as shown in iig. 3. @Theo of such groove is to enable the stud h to be vplaced in its chamber, and the screw-plug tob'e removedfro bodyportin whenever it may be desirable.
Having described the construction of my improved nozzle, I will describe its operation. If we suppose the nozzle to be attached to a bose-pipe communicating with a hydrant or rcser the voir of water,'., and we desire to discharge thc water in a'i'ull and solid stream, we rst turn the milled nut D, Yso as to bring-the two ports. b b into direct communication with' the chambers C C of 'the-body A'. v Under these circumstances,
'the water will be discharged from the nozzle in` a streaml equal to the full capacity of its bore. By turning-'fthe said nut a partial rcvolution,we can so limit the receiving-area of the ports b that the water issuingfromthe H0221@ Will have thcfcrm of mist orspray, and, by ay further movement'of the said nut D, the water may be caused to issue ir'orth inl lines more or less divergent, forming ahollow cone o`` greaterrol iess diamxqte'lr, as be desirable', and by a still fuather movement ot' the nut D, the. ports b b may bo elosgd, d'Iug'rvflayjfhgA vw'agd of the water will be entirely checked. v i From the above it will be seen-that, b
y the peculiar construction of my improved nozzle, it'scrves to per .form the duties of the two nozzles ordinarily employed, therebydispensing with the` cosi;l of one nozzle, and thc trouble of changing the nozzles, as circumstances may require.
I claim an improved hose-pipe nozzle', consisting of the body A, t
he hollowl screw-plug B, the milled nut D,
t hud the check-nut E, the whole being constructed arid made to operate together, substantially as above set forth- I also claim the screw-plug B, as madre withthechambermor recess f, the same operating inconjunction with the stud or projection tdispcsed Ourthe inner periphery' the body A, in thc manner and for' lthe purpose set forth.
FRANCIS S. BABBITT.
