Be it known'thet I, Jonn 5. 'Eowssos, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ann Arbor, in the count of Washtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders; and I do hereby declare the following to he a. full, clear, and exact description of the inven tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it eppertains to make and use the some. 7

This invention relates to temporary bindore for holding blank or other sheets of paper or cards and for filing letters, hills receipts, &o., and more particularly to that class of devices in which hinged binding wires or rods with laterally-extending hooks are used for filing the sheets, cards, 36, by inserting the hooks through preferably suitably spaced perforations in the sheets, cards, or other nistter to be filed.

The main object of my invention to provide a. simple and eflicient temporary binder with means for positively locking and retaining the hooks thereof in closed position, while permitting them to he easily opened and again returned to closed position and firmly locked without liability to open accidentally in handling.

In the latter position the locking-slide may be moved longitudinally sufliciently to bring the recess and notches therein out of alinement with the recess and notches of the holder, and the intermediate portion of the slide will overlie and hold down the tongue or projection so as to prevent the hinged binding-wire from turnmg and releasing the hooks. Auxiliary looking devices are provided by notching or curving the ends of the hooks opposite the notches b of the holder, so that when the slide is moved to bring the recess and notches therein out of alinement with the recess and notches of the holder the body portion of the slide will engage the curved or recessed ends of the hooksand lock the same in closed position. The

The ocking member or slide D may be conveniently held against rotation by providing return-bends at the ends thereof fitted to slide back and forth in wa s rovided therefor by the overturned or fiddled edge of the back plate or in any other suitable manner, so as to maintain the same in proper position for engagement and disenga ement with the tongue and hooks of the bin ing-wire.

In the modification shown in Fig. 9 the intermediate locking device provided by the ton ue on the binding-wire for engagement wit the lockin -slide is omitted, provision for locking the indin -wire being made by engagement of the 100 'ng member with the curved or recessed ends of the hooks only.

In the modification shown in Fig. 10 the auxiliary locking connections between the ends of the hooks and the slide are omitted, and the binding-wire is adapted to be locked and firml retained in place when the hooks are close by means of the intermediate projection or tongue on the binding-wire undery'in'g the locking-slide.

The notches in the es e of the back plate which receive the depending ends of the hooks serve also as guards therefor and prevent the same from being bent sidewise or out of alinement with said notches. -When the slide and binding-wire have been properly positioned and secured in the folds can be released, however, by

In operation the parts are assembled and locked in the position indicated in Figs. 1 and 2 by en agement of the locking-slide with the recesse ends of the hook and the intermediate tongue or projection. When the locking member is moved to the position shown in Fig. 3, (the hooks of the binding-wire being opposite the notches or recesses in the looking member and the ton e also opposite the recess therein,) the hoo s may be raised to the position shown in dotted lines in Figs. 3 and 7 and in full lines in Fig. 6. In this position blank sheets, cards, or other matter to be filed can be slipped upon the hooks or in a similar manner removed therefrom. By a reverse movement of the parts the hooks are again brought into the position shown in Fi s. 1 and 2 and locked. One of the bent en s of the locking member may be convenientl used as a handle for pullin and pushing the locking-slide into or out of ocking position, or any other suitable means may be em loyed for this purpose, as may be desired or Found to be most convenient in practical use.

While I preferably em loy a holder consisting of an oblong meta ic plate having its sides or longitudinal edges folded and serving as a means for rotatively securing thereto alon one edge thereof a binding-wire provide with hooks having notched or bent ends and arranged to swing transversely of the holder to its 0 posite side or edge for engagement with a qocking-slide movable lengthwise of. the holder in a fold or folds thereof for locking said hooks in closed position, I do not desire to be limited to the exact construction and arrangement of parts illustrated and s ecifically described, for it is obvious that tiie hooks may be retained in closed position b other means and without the interposition oi a locking-slide for engagin their crooked or notched ends, and the hol er may also be differently constructed and of any suitable material and its edges difl'erently folded, and various other changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. A tem rary or loose-leaf binder comprising a ho der adapted for attachment to the back of a book-cover, a binding-wire havin an intermediate portion rotatively secured to said holder along one margin thereof and rigid hooks at op osite extremities of 'said intermediate portion extending transversely of the holder to the op osite margin thereof, and means along the atter margin constructed to enga e with the ends of said position.

3. 14. A tempora binder for holding sheets of aper and the ike, comprising a sultable hol der independent of but adapted for attachment to the back of a book cover or subport, and a ,binding-wire rotatively secured along one side of said holder and provided with hooks arranged to swing transversely of the holder and having their ends constructed to engage with retaining means at the op 0- site side or margin of the holder, to at er with means at the opposite side of the older for engaging e ends of said hooks so as to retain them in closed position.

15. A tempora binder for holding sheets of paper and the 11 e, comprising a ho der independent of but adapted for attachment to a suitablesupport and consisting of an oblong plate having its opposite sides turned over u on itself or folded, a binding-wire rotative y secured in one of said folds and provided with hooks arranged to swin transversely of the holder to the opposite fold; said hooks having their ends constructed to coact with suitable retaining means on the holder, and means at the latter fold or opposite side of the holder for engaging the ends of said hooks and retaining them in closed position.
