Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENoE F. Ronenns,
a citizen of the United States, residin in the city of Connea'ut, county of Ashtabu a, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Dental and Sur ical Lamp, of which the following is a speci 'cation.
The object of my invention'is an improved lamp especially ap licable for dentists and surgeons use and d dsigned to throw concentrated rays of li 'ht upon a desired object by the means of telescopic tubes and a parallel lens or lenses so arranged. that they may throw parallel rays of light within a desired diameter and within a certain degree of adjustability, the mechanism used being readily adjustable to any electric light without necessitating additional wiring.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved de vice. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating the telesco ic lens-carrier.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the followin description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The lens-carrier 1 comprises two telescoping tubes 2 and 3, the inner tube 3 being provided. at its end with an inturned flange 4, constituting a shoulder against which the lens 5 is designed to abut. A retaining spring-ring 6 is arranged to hold the lens in securely-locked position against the retaining-flange 4. The opposite end of the outer tube 2 is provided with an outwardly-beveled flange 7, and a conical reflector 8 is secured to the lens-carrier 1 by being slipped thereover into engagement with the flange 7, the parts being thereby preferably adj ustably held together. The conical reflector 8 is preferably open at its larger end and is provided in its wall with a lateral opening 9, in
which is secured a laterally-projecting lampholder 1 0. In the present instance this lampholder constitutes a sleeve and is designed to receive an electric-light bulb l1, and for this purpose it is provided in its outer ends with ongitudinal slots 12, forming spring retaining-flngers 13. The electric-light bulb 11 may, if desired, be secured to any suitable form of handle, so that the lamp may be used for surgical or other work where a stationary light cannot be used, said handle being fitted to the socket 14 of the lamp or bulb, the electric wire passing around or through the same. The lar er end of the reflector 8 is open, so that light may be thrown upon the working table, while the reflector serves the further purpose of shading the eyes of both theoperator and the patient. By means of these telescoping tubes 2 and 3 the lens may be adjusted, as is evident, thereby furnishing means of directing and controlling the rays of light so that they cover a given diameter and illustrate agiven body with the desired brilliancy. The preferable electric bulb used in connection with the other parts of the lamp contains a spiral filament for the purpose of giving a more perfect and uniform sphere of light, and the sleeve or holder 10 of the deflector is so arranged that with the ordinary lamp-bulb the light will be at the proper polint within the reflector to give the best resu ts.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- A device of the character described comprising a lens-holder embodying two telescopic tubes in one of which is a lens and the other of which is provided with an outwardlybeveled flange at its end, a conical reflector open at both ends with its smaller end engaging around said flange, and a lamp-holder or sleeve projecting laterally from said reflector.
