Be it known that I, LOUIS CLEMENT Gas- Tox RIVIERRE, a citizen of. the Republic of France, residing in Paris, in the Republic of France, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements 1n Transmission Mechanis a specification. a
This invention relates to transmission mechanisms for motor-cycles and similar machines or vehicles, and has for its object the provision of means whereby the starting of the motor may be readily eifected'through; the medium of the pedals.
A further object of the invention isthe provision of such a mechanism in which the motor may be readily started before the starting of the machine, so that it is unnecessary to push the latter by pedaling and so that a handle or'belt-gear for starting the motor is rendered unnecessary. V i
The invention also aims to provide a mechanism in which the transmissionchain or other gearing from the motor may be readily removed, so that it is possible to drive the machine in case ofa breakdown of the motor by pedaling either with the ordihary or a changespeed ear.
Wit these ends in view the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of isms for Motor-Cycles, of which the following parts, to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference characters denote the same parts throughout, Figure 1 is a vertical central section through a transmission mechanism constructed in accordance with the invention, and Fig. 2 is a detail elevation of one of the cams for actuating the clutch.
Referring to the drawings, ,1 indicates a fixed axle, such as used in ordinar cycles and motor-cycles. A hollowspind e 2 rotates freel about the fixed axle upon the ordinary ballea'r'ings, as shown, and at one end of the hollow spindle 2 is keyed inv any suitable way a sprocket l, adapted to receive movement from t emotor through the medium of a sprocketchain or other transmission-gear. A sleeve 25 is keyed upon the op osite end of the hollow spindle 2 and is capa 1c of movementlongi- 'tudina'lly thereof. This sleeve 25 carries a fixed sprocket 5, adapted to transmit motion by means of a sprocket-chain or other transmission device from the (ranks of the machine, said sprocket Sbeingfixed, as Wlll be obvious, to the spindle 2 and incapable o f,inde pendent rotary movement. Ad acentQ the sleeve 25 is arranged a disk 37',adaptedf=to, bear-agamst the same, and two super osed cams 26 26 are adapted to shift said dis longitudinally through the medium pfball-be armgs, which are interposed between the inner cam 26 and said disk, the cams 26 and 26 being provided with grooves or serrations which are adapted to be placed or out of'register,. according to therelative angular posit on of the cams. The earns 26 and 26 are provided 'with tailpieces 27 and 27 respectively, said tailpieces beiniggperforated, as shown. The tailpiece 27 is ed in a suitable manner (not shown) with the frame of the machine, while the other tailpiece is adapted to be connected to a suitable rod, whereby the shifting of the cams and the axial movement of the sleeve 25 may be effected. f
The hollowspindle 2 carries a bearing-rm 29, of suitable metal, which abuts at one en against ball-bearings 30, interposed between the same and the sprocket 4. The hub roper of the mechanism is adapted to rotate reely about said bearing-ring, and said hub comprises two disks '3, which are clamped together by means of tubular members 31. The members 31 are interiorly and exteriorly threaded and provided with intermediate shoulders, against which one of said disks constituting the hub is clamped, while the other disk is clamped against the same by means of a nut 30* engaging the exterior threads of the tubular members. At their opposite ends the parts 31 are screwed into a rmg32, which maintains the Sallie rigidly in position. These parts also serve to seat helical s rings 23, the tension of which may be regu ated by means of nuts h engaging the interior threads of said parts and abutting against the ends 'of said springs. The function of these springs will be more particularly described hereinafter. One of the disks 3, constitutin the hub, is provided with .a cone-rin 35, whic is clamped to the periphery thereof by means of screws, as shown, andprovided upon its conical surface with a layer 36 of fibrous orother material, adapted to augment the friction between the ring 35 and a cone clutch member 22 24. The clutch member 22 24 is freely rotatable about the part 25, rotating upon a bearing ring 34 thereon. The hollow spindle 2 has keyed to it, intermediately of the sprockets 4 and '5, a pinion 14;, which meshes with aplurality of planetary pinions 15, journaled upon stud-pins 16. which pass through two encircling the part 24 of the member 22 24,

It apparent that upon the rotation of the hollow spindle 2 the pinion 14 will drive the planetary pinions 15 and impart to them an epic/ycloidal movement which Will cause the rota tion of the member 22 24 through the me- I diuin of the internally-toothed crown 17. In order to effect the rotation of the hub at a reduced speed, the member 22 24 braked by means of the clutch-strap ,40, so that said clutch member, being thus rendered station ary, will cause the rotation of the planetary pinions 15, and thereby transmit motion to the hub 33, which will be rotated at a reduced speed, as will be obvious. Upon the shitting ot the cam 26in the opposite direction the member 22 24 and the hub-will be locked, and the hub 3 willthenbe rotated at the same speed as the sprockets 4 and 5.
By myinvention a mechanisni is provided by which the use of a hand-crank or other similar device for starting the motor before mounting the motor-cycle is obviated. It is possible by the improved mechanism to readily remove the transmission-chain from the motor and to propel the machine by means of the pedals independently of the motor, it being possible to use either of two speeds.
