,in connection with motor-vehicles, and has forits ob ect to provide an arrangement-of gearing which shall be simple in construction, comparatively inexpensive to build, and be convenient and certain in operation.
In motor-vehicles it is desirable to provide for driving the vehicle either ahead or to the rear ata high speed, moderate speed, or slow speed, as desired, and for shifting quickly `from one speed to another and for quickly stopping or reversing.
The gearing capable of providing for such different speeds and for so reversing ordinarily involves thev use of a large number of parts, making it expensive in construction and liable to easily O'et out of order. In my invention the speed may be readily varied Within considerable limits through the high, moderate, and slow speeds. My invention consists in the construction and arrangement .hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my improved power-transmitting mechanism. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view. 4

tapered external driving-face 11. Arranged within the drum 6 is a friction or spur driving-gear 12, carried by a shaft 13. The driving-gear 12 has an outer driving-face 14 and an internal tapered driving-face 15. The driving-gear 12 and the drum 6 are so mounted, as hereinafter described, that by movement of one or the other, or both, thc outer driving-face 14 of the driving-gear may be brought into contact or engagement with either of the internal driving-faces 8 .or 9 of the drum 6 or its'internal tapered drivingface 15 may be brought into engagement with the tapered driving-face 11 of the extension 10 of said drum. When a riction-drive is used, the driving-face 14 is preferably )rovided with a friction-surface 16, of' rawhide or other non-metallic material affording a goed friction-surface.
The shaft 13 is journalcd in a bearing 17, carried by the frame 1, and is connected at its outer end with the fly-wheel 18 of the motor by a friction-clutch or 'in any convenientl manner, as by ilexible connection 19, the ilywheel 1S being a part ot' the motor or other lsource oi power used.
In order to permit of the movement of the driving-gear 12 and drum 6 necessary to bring 4the driving-face 14 into engagement with the internal driving-faces 8 or 9 or to bring the driving-face 15 into engagement with the driving-face 11, it is necessary to provide for swinging' the shaft 5, carrying the drum-6, in a plane at right angles toits axis and to rovide for movement of the driving-gear12 on- `tudinally of the axis of its shaft. The swinging of the shaft 5 is efiected by swinging the hinged frame 2 by means of lever 19, carried by rock-shaft 20, journaled in the frame and carrying at a point-near the shaft 5 a leverarm 21, the free end of which is connected by link 22 with the free end of the hinged frame 2. The lever 19 is provided with the usual sprin locking-bolt `23, adapted to engage any one o the notches 24, formed in the iixed segroo ment 25, at the center of which the .rock-shaft 20 is journaled, so that the shaft 5, with the friction or gear drum 6, may pro er elevations, as desired.
Tlhe link 22 consists of a a jointed arms 27, connected at their upper ends to the lever-arm 21 and at their lower ends connected to the hinged frame 2. The pivots 28, which connect the upper and lower members of the arms 27, extend into a slet 29 i io be locked at the ir of flexiblem vehicle to be actuated by the foot of the operator to rock the rod 31 and cause the camarms 32 to act against the arms 27 yto spread them, and thus by shortening the length of the link cause the hinged frame 2 to be raised slightly, raising the shaft 5 and drum 6 and pressing the internal driving-face of the drum w6 against the periphery ofthe driving-gear 12, increasing the frictional contact, and, if used on a friction-drum, by lessening the slip, increasing the speed of the vehicle.
In order to permit of the movement of the driving-gear 12 longitudinally on its shaft 13, it is connected to the shaft by a spline and is journaled in a bearing 36, carried by a slide 37, movable on a guide 38, secured to a transverse bar 39 of the frame 1. The movement of the slide 37 is effected by means of a sleeve 46, adapted to rock on a rod 41, secured at its ends to the frame 1, the sleeve carrying at one end anarm 42, having at its end a pin 43,
engaging a slot 44 in the slide 37' and having at the other end anvarm 45, connected by a llink 46 with a lever 47, suitably pivoted in the frame 1. Y
Beside the gear 7, on its: rear end the shaft 5 is also provided intermediate its ends with a gear 49. Parallel with the, shaft 5 is a shaft 50, 'carried in bearings 51, secured to the hinged frame 2, and on the shaft is slidingly carried a sleeve 52, having at one end a gear 53, adapted to be engaged by the gear 49, and at its other end an internal gear'54, adapted to engage the gear 7 on shaft .5. Between the gear 53 and internal gear 54 the sleeveis provided With a flanged collar, within which work the arms of a forked lever 56, pivoted to a fixed portion of the frame 2 and connected by a link 58 to any convenient shifting means.
-At its rear end the shaft is connected by any convenient form of universal joint 59 to ashaft 60, extending to the rear axle of the vehicle and connected theretoby any convenient form of gearing. (Not necessary to be shown.)
When it is desired to drive the vehicle ahead at slow speed, the lever 19 is moved to raise the shaft 5 and drum 6 to the position shown in Fig. 1, the lever 47 being operated to bring the eriphery of the driving-gear 12 into mesh or ictional engagement with the internal face 8 of the drum, power being transmitted from the shaft 13 through the gear 12, the
drum 6, shaft 5, gear 49, gear 53, shaft 50, universal joint 59, and shaft 6() to the axle. When increased speed is desired, the shaft 5 and drum 6 are lowered slightly and the driv- A ing-gear 12 is pushed rearward to bring its perlp'hery into mesh or frictional engagement with ythe internal face 9 of the drum, the
power being transmitted as before. When it is desired to further increase the speed, the
'shaft 5 and drum 6 are further lowered until the axis of the shaft 5 is in line with the axisA of shaft 13, and the gear 12 is pushed rearwardly until its internal face 15 engages the face 11 of the hub of the drum 6, the power being transmitted a's before. By operating the lever 33 when the driving-gear is in engagement with the internal face 8 or the internal face 9 of the drum the pressure of the driving-gear against the drum may be varied, thus regulating the slip and Within-limits varying the speed. When it is desired to drive v the vehicle rearward, the sleeve 52 is shifted to move the gear 53 out of engagement with the gear 49 and to bring the ,internal gear 54 into engagement with the gear 7. In order to stop the vehicle, it is only necessary to operate the lever 47 or to move the gear 12 forward out of frictional contact with the part of the drum 6 with which it may be in contact at the time without moving the shaft 5 and drum, and, conversely, in starting, the drumA beingin thc position desired, it is 'necessary only to operate the lever 47 to move the gear 12 into engagement with the drum.
The internal face 15 of the gear 12-may, if preferred, be provided with teeth to engage corresponding teeth on the hub of the drum 6.
It will vof course be understood that Ido notdesire to be limited tio -the precise construction and arrangement shown, nor. do I desire to be limited to the use of the friction contact alone, but can use gearing on the driving-pulley 12 and teeth internally in the drum 6, nor is it limited to use in connection with motor-vehicles, as it is evident that it may be used-for other purposes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a power-transmitting mechanism, the combination'with a driving-gear having external and internal driving-faces, of a drum having an internal face adapted to be en- IOO IIO
gaged by the external drivmg-face of the gear, and also an external face ada ted to be. engaged by the internal drivingace of the gear. f
2. In a power-transmitting mechanism, the combination with a driving-gear having an external and an internal drivin -face, of a drum having a pluralit ofinterna faces each adapted to be engage by the external drvadapted to be `engaged by the peripheral driving-face of the driving-gear, a shaft on which the drum is secured, a hinged Jframe carrying bearings in which the shaft is journaled and means for raising and lowering the free end ofthe hinged frame. In a power-transmitting mechanism, the combination with a driving-gear having a peripheral driving-face, oi" a drum having a plurality of internal faces, each of which is adapted to be engaged by the peripheral driving-face of the driving-gear, a shaft on which the drum is secured, a hinged frame carrying bearings in which the shaft is journaled, means for raising and lowering the free end of the hinged frame and means for moving the driving-gear longitudinally of its axis.
5. In a power-transmitting.. mechanism the combination with a driving-gear having a peripheral driving-face, of a drum having an internal face for-engagement with the driving-face of the gear, means for raising the drum to bring its internal face into contact with the driving-face of the gear, and independently-operated means for varying they lcontact between the gear and the drum.
6.I In a power-transmitting mechanism, the combination with a driving-gear having a peripheral driving-face, of a drum having an internal face, for engagement with the driving-face of the gear, means for raising the drum to bring its internal surface into contact with the driving-face of the gear, comprising a lever-arm and a connecting-link, and means for varying the effective length of the link to vary the contact between the gear and the drum.
7. In a powertransmitting mechanism, the combination with a driving-gear having a peripheral dri ving-face, of a drum having an internal face, for engagement with the driving-face of the gear, means for raising the drum to bring its internal face into contact with the driving-face of the gear comprising a rock-shaft provided with an operating-lever and with a lever-arm and connectinglink, means for locking the operating-lever and means for varying the effective length of the link to vary the contact between the gear and drum.
