M a A Z,
WITNESSES in S LOG-TURNER.-
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 30, 1906.
Application filed August 28,1905- Serial No. 276,013.
Be it known that I, FRED W. BEITNER, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Traverse City, in the county of Grand Traverse and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Log-Turners; and
I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it My invention relates to that class of devices which is used for turning logs upon their carriages in sawmills; and its object is to furnish effective and easily-governed means for controlling the lateral position and thrust of the toothed bar, or, as it is sometimes termed, the nigger, which engages and turns the log. I attain these objects by means of the devices and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and shown and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device; and Fig. 2, atop plan view of a portion of my device, taken in section on line y, Fig. 1.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in both views. 7
In the drawings, 1 is the carriage upon which the log 2 rests and is secured for presentation to the saw or saws.
3 is the log-deck, from which the logs are rolled onto the carriage.
4 is an upright bar upon or in one edge of which are pivoted, as at 5, a series of teeth 6, which when the bar is moved upwardly engage the side of the log and'turn the log axially. When the bar is moved downwardly, the teeth are either out of contact with the log, or if in contact with the log they swing inwardly upon their pivots without catching the log. This vertical movement of the toothed bar is obtained by means of a steam-actuated piston-rod 7, pivotally connected, as at 8, with the lower end of the bar and moving in cylinder 9. The lateral movement of the toothed bar 4 is effected by means of a piston-rod 10, one end of which is pivotally and slidably connected with the bar, the other end being connected with a piston in steam-cylinder 11. Upon the side of the bar t next to the rod 10 is secured at its top and bottom a guide-bar 12. Between the back of the toothed bar 4 and the guide-bar 12 is a straight space or slot 13. In this space is a roller 14:, journaled on pin 15, the ends of which are secured in the bifurcated ends of the head 16 of the pistonrod 10. In the deck above the cylinder 11 and its piston-rod is a slot 17, which permits the unobstructed movement longitudinally and transversely of the bar 4. It will be un derstood that the admission and exhaust of steam to and from the two steam-cylinders are governed by suitable valves connected with appropriate hand-levers, which need not be here further described.
The operation of my device is as follows: Assuming that the log is upon the carriage, as shown in Fig. 1, to shift the log axially steam is admitted to the lower cylinder to lift the toothed bar 4. At the same time by proper admission of steam to the upper cylinder the bar 4 is pressed against the side of the log, so that the teeth engage the log. This side pressure may thus be made as strong as may be necessary or as may be desired. As the bar 4. is raised and lowered it is guided and held in the proper horizontal position by the guideroller 14, traversed by the guide-slot 13 between the bars 4 and 12. To prevent shock or jar in case these bars are suddenly withdrawn too far, there is fixed rigidly in their backward path a spring-buffer 18.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
In a device of the described character, a toothed member, a piston-rod pivotally connected with and adapted to impart longitudinal movement to said toothed member, and another piston-rod pivotally and slidably connected with and adapted to impart transverse movement to said toothed member.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
FRED W. BEITNER.
I/Vitnesses:
MARIE E. BEITNER, WILLIAM BEITNER.
