TOWN SEND STITES, OF GLOUCESTER CITY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO WELSBACH LIG-HT COMPANY, OF GLOUCESTER CITY, NEW J ERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
MANTLE-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 30, 1906.
To 1r/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TOWNSEND STITEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gloucester City, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Mantle-Support, of which the following is a specification,
Objects of the present invention are to provide a mantle-carrier which is complete in itself and is adapted to be transported along with the mantle and applied as a unit for use in connection with burners of high heating power, to make impossible the bending of the supporting-Wire, and to provide for properly supporting the refractory magnesia or like tube with which the supporting wire is sheathed.
To these and other ends, hereinafter set forth, the invention comprises the improvements to be presently described, and finally claimed.
The nature, characteristic features, and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description,
taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 is an elevational view of a mantlesupport embodying features of the invention, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view illustrating a detail of construction.
In the drawings, 1 is a burner top or collar provided with an upwardly-extending holder or tubular socket 2, constituting at its top a shoulder 3.
4 is a refractory tube, as of magnesia, and it is seated on the shoulder 3.
5 is a mantle supporting wire rising from the holder 2 and penetrating the refractory tube 4, by which it is sheathed. As shown, the internal diameter of the tube 4 exceeds the internal diameter of the wire 5, thus affording an air-space.
6 is a mantle or incandescent which depends from the horizontally-arranged upper end of the supporting-wire 5 in such a way that its skirt hangs below the top of and encircles the top or collar 1.
The refractory tube supported in the position described by the shoulder 3 serves to 5o sheath the shank of the mantle-supporting wire. Thus it protects the latter from the heat of the burner, which in the case of highpower lights is considerable. I-Ience the shank of the mantle-supporting wire is not heated sufficiently to soften, so that it remains upright and properly supports the mantle in vertical position. The fact that the mantlesupporting wire is prevented from bending, and thus holds the mantle vertically, contributes to the maximum durability of the mantle, as the latter lasts longer when held vertically over the burner.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains that modiiications may be made in detail without departing from the spirit thereof. Hence the invention is not limited other than the prior state of the art requires; but,
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A burner-top provided with a shoulder, a mantle-supporting wire rising from the shoulder, and a refractory tube seated on the shoulder and sheathing the wire and of larger internal diameter than the external diameter of the Wire so as to afford an air-space, substantially as described. ff-- 2. A-burner-top provided with an upwardlyextending tubular socket, a refractory tube seated on the top rim of the tubular socket, and a mantle-supporting wire rising from the interior of the socket and penetrating the tube whereby the shank of the wire is protected and reinforced throughout its length, substantially as described.
3. A burner top or cap provided with means for holding a mantle-supporting wire, a mantle-supporting wire and a refractory tube sheathing the wire and which is of larger internal diameter than the external diameter of the wire so as to afford an air-passage, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
TOWNSEND STITES.
In presence of-- FRANKLIN L. KELLNER, L. E. SMITH.
