mum degree of simplicity and which may be readily applied preparatory to operation thereof and removed after the cylinder has been properly trued. The invention relates, primarily, to the specific form of attaching means utilized to support the boring-bar, as the device is ordinarily called, so that the same is firmly held in proper alinement in the cylinder in which it is being operated, and, fur- 1 ther, the invention comprises peculiar adjusting mechanism for advancing the cutter-head of the bar.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings. 4
While the invention may be adapted to different forms and conditions by changes in the structure and minor details without departing from the spirit or essential features thereof, still the preferred embodiment thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the invention as when applied to an engine-cylinder. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the cutter-head, showing more clearly the mounting of the cutter and the adjusting means therefor. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken about on the line a; m of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
In the adaptation of the invention shown in the drawings an engine-cylinder 1 of common form is illustrated, the boring-bar or support 2 being located in operative position therein. The bar 2 is held in proper position at the open end of the cylinder 1 by means of a supporting-plate 3, which is attached, by means of bolts 4, preferably, to the flange 5 of the cylinder, against which the cylinder-head is ordinarily secured. The head of the cylinder 1 is of course removed when the boring-bar 2 is used, and the plate 3 is slotted at its opposite ends, as shown at 6, in order that the same may be adjusted properly to exactly aline the boring-bar within the cylinder. The closed end of the cylinder 1 supports the boring-bar also, an end of the latter being journaled at this portion of the cylinder, projecting therethrough, as shown at 7. The closed ends of the engine-cylinders are usually provided with a tubular extension 8 for packing purposes,and this extension when the boring-bar 2 is in position is used to receive a bushing 9, the bore of which is exactly the same size as the adjacent end of the boring-bar 2, so that said end may be snugly received and journaled in the bushing. Anut 10 is adapted to be screwed upon a threaded stem 11, which projects from the end of the boring-bar 2, and this nut 10 is reduced so that a portion thereof may be readily received within the bushing 9 to assist in supporting the boring-bar in a centralized position. A jam-nut 12 screws against the nut 10 to prevent displacement of the latter, and in the operation of the invention the nuts 19 and 11 are adapted to rotate with the boring-bar 2 as the same is being operated. The boring-bar .2 has mounted thereon the cutter-head 13, having an opening between its ends receiving the bar 2. The cutter-head 13 is recessed upon opposite sides at one end thereof, and the recessed portions receive cutting-tools 14:, one of which is usually a roughingtool, whereas the other is a smoothing-tool. The head 13, which operates with the bar 2, is providedwith adjusting means cooperating with a feed-screw 15, mounted upon the bar 2, said feed-screw 15 being designed to advance the head 13 in the cutting operation. The adjusting means mentioned consist of a set-stem 16, adapted to be secured into the threaded portion of an opening 18, which leads from the extremity of the cutter-head 13 opposite that having the cutters 14 thereon to the opening of the head, through which the boring-bar 2 passes. The stem 16 is adapted to adjust an adjusting element 17, having swivel connection with the inner extremity of the stem 16, as shown at 19. The element 17 is provided with an opening 20 transversely thereof, from which the screw 15 passes, and this opening 20 is slightly elongated to permit of a slight movement of the element 17 under the actuation of the stem 16. The element 17 is threaded at one extremity of the opening 20 therethrough, so that as the screw 15is rotated when the threads of said screw are in engagement with those of the element 17 the cutter-head will be gradually advanced within the cylinder in an obvious manner.
The boring-bar 2 is operated by any suitable power, and for this purpose an arm 21 is projected from the plate 8 and supports a short shaft 22, upon which are mounted a toothed pinion 23 and a loose pulley 24. The
pinion 23 is provided with a pulley extension 25 integraltherewith, and said pinion is in mesh with a gear-wheel 26, keyed to the bar 2, as shown at 27. The gear-wheel 26 is located adjacent the outer end of the bar 2 and operates exterior of the cylinder 1 in the actual use of the invention, as also does the several transmitting devices above mentioned. Power may be applied to the pulley 24: by a belt or similar device, and when it is desired to operate-the bar 2 said belt is thrown upon the extension 25 of the pinion 23, and motion is thus transmitted to the bar 2 through the medium of the gear-wheel 26. It will be understood, however, that any suitable means other than that illustrated may be provided for driving the pinion 23 or bar 2, and under certain conditions a crank-handle may be suitably provided for actuation of these parts. A suitable tappet 28,is mounted upon the screw 15 adjacent the outer end of this screw, the portion of the screw device 15 upon which the tappet is mounted being squared, as shown most clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawings, in order that the tappet will be caused to rotate the screw under actual conditions of service. The tappet 28 is slidably mounted upon thescrew 15, so that the said tappet may be moved into a position in which it will be struck by a stop 29, projected from the plate 8, or in a position in which it will not be actuated by this member 29. The outer end of the screw 15 is provided with a small crank 30, by which the screw may be operated in order to reverse the movement of the cutterhead 13 after the latter has been advanced the entire length of the cylinder in effecting the truing of the same. Specifically describing the operation of the invention, the parts being arranged in the position shown in Fig. 1,
as power is communicated to the boring-bar 2 through suitable means, such-as illustrated, said bar is constantly rotated. As the bar 2 is rotated the tappet 28, which has previously been disposed in a position in which it will cooperate with the stop 29, will strike said stop at a predetermined point in the revolution of the bar 2, giving a slight rotary movement to the screw 15. The slight rotary movement of the screw 15 advances the cutter-head 13 gradually until said cutter has moved the entire length of the cylinder 1.
To reverse the movement of the cutter-head, it is only necessary to throw the tappet 28 away from the stop 29, whereupon the crank 30 may be readily actuated and the head 13 quickly brought into a position adjacent the outer extremity of the cylinder. If necessary, the adjusting element 17 may be operated by the stem 16 so as to throw the threaded portion of the element 17 away from the corresponding portion of the screw 15, and this will admit of free slidable movement of the cutter-head longitudinally of the bar 2. It will of course be understood that the screw 15 is received in a slot arranged longitudinally of the bar 2, and the inner end of the adjusting element 17, projecting into this slot, forms a key, which necessitates rotation of the cutter-head with the bar 2.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- In combination, a support, a feed-screw arranged upon the support, a head carried by the support movable longitudinally thereof and provided with an opening extending from an end thereof, an adjusting element mounted in the opening aforesaid and provided with a transverse elongated opening receiving the feed-screw, a portion of said elongated opening being threaded, an adjusting-stem threaded into the opening formed in the head and having swivel connection with the adjusting element above mentioned to admit of adjustment of said element relative to the feed-screw for the purposes specified.
