To a/ZZ whom it may con/cern.:
Be it known that I, HENRY F. KOHLHAGEN, a titizen of the United States, and a resident of Sheboygan, in the county of Sheboygan and State of Wfisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Set-Screw Coverings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to devices for covering the set-screws on shafts and other moving parts of machinery, whereby the danger of accidents is largely eliminated; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully set forth hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
- In the said drawings, Figure l is a View, partly in elevation and partly in section on the plane indicated by the line l 1 of Fig. 2, illustrating a bit held by a set-screw to the spindle of a boring-machine, said set-screw being protected by my covering device. Fig. 2 is a plan view of said parts, partly in section on the plane indicated by the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of my said covering device. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the same, taken on the plane indicated by the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Referring by numerals to the said drawings, l represents the boring shaft or spindle of a boring-machine, to which is secured a bit 2, whose shank 3 is held in place byasetscrew 4. The lower part 5 of said shaft or spindle, which is formed with a bore for the reception of the bit-shank, is shown as ofv greater diameter than the upper part 1, so as to form a shoulder, as shown in Fig. l. The part 5 and the set-screw 4 are surrounded by an annular covering, here shown as made in two parts 6 6, like a split pulley, united by screws 7 7, introduced through holes 8 in one part and screwing into the edge of the other part, the two parts being centered by means of laterally-arranged pins 9 9, set fast in the meeting edge of one part to project into corresponding semicircular grooves in the meeting edge of the other part, these pins being arranged in pairs, with the screws 7 between their opposed inner ends, as best shown in Fig. 4, and thereby the heads of said screws 7 are entirely within the circumference of the covering 6 6. The said covering after the two parts have been fastened together is slipped to place from one end of the shaft or spindle, and the head of the set-screw 4 is received in an edge groove 10, which has inner side extensions 11 1l, and then the covering is slightly turned, so that the head of the setscrew is within one or the other of said groove extensions, the play of said covering being then limited in either direction longitudinally of the shaft orspindle. In this arrangement if it is desired to change a bit the covering is raised up and rested on the shoulder formed by the increased diameter of the lower part 5 of the spindle l, the set-screw4 loosened, and another bit substituted, after which the shank of this new bit is secured by again tightening the set-screw and the covering turned to allow the set-screw head to enter the groove l0 as lthe covering is dropped again to place and then turned, as before. It is immaterial whether a vertical or horizontal shaft is employed, as the covering will protect any projecting set-screw, and by always presenting a smooth outer surface all danger of the setscrew catching in the clothing of an operator or striking against him when the shaft is in motion is obviated.
These coverings may be made of any diameter desired, and if too large in any instance ordinary split bushings may be employed; but I'have not deemed it'necessary to illustrate such in the drawings, as their construction'is well known. v
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A set-screw covering consisting of a split band, pins set fast in the meeting edges of one part of the band to project into corresponding grooves provided in the meeting edges of the other part of said band, and one of said parts provided with an inner edge groove having side extensions at one end, the latter groove being for the engagement of the head of a setscrew projecting from a shaft or spindle encircled by the covering, and screws uniting the aforesaid parts of the covering.
