COMBINATION-TOOL.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1905.
Application filed June 12, 1905. Serial No. 264,953.
To 1r/ZZ` whom, it may concern:
'Be it known that I, ELI HOGAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portland,
in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention is an improvement in combinatlon-tools; and 1t consists 1n certaln novel constructions and combinations of parts heredome, and Fig. 5 is a similar view from the front.
In the practical application of my invention I provide a base A of suitable material and of rectangular form having therein a central circular recess a and on the bottom thereof countersunk recesses a' for receiving the heads of leveling-screws a2, passing upward through the base and engaging the lower surface of a circular metallic plate a3, seated within the recess. A rubber gasket rests upon the plate and a hollow inner dome B upon the gasket.
The inner dome B is provided with a circumferential flange b, fitting closely within the circular recess, and with a circumferential groove b immediately above the flange. A gasket-ring b2 is fitted around the dome upon the flange and supports aflange b3 of an outer transparent dome If. The outer dome Za4 is provided on its inner face adjacent to the shoulder with a circumferential groove b5, registering with the circumferential groove on the convex face of the inner dome, and a perforation b extends from the concavity of the inner dome into the space between the domes for a purpose to be hereinafter described. Bolts 127, having heads fitting in countersunk openings 68 on the lower surface of th'e flange of the inner dome, and with nuts b in countersunk openings 721 on the upper surface of the flange on the outer dome, secure the domes together. Screws b, engaging perforations in the base and having heads 612 engaging the upper surface of the shoulder of the outer dome, secure the domes in the recess.
Upon the convex surface of the inner dome, which is ground to a perfect spherical surface, I provide indicating-lines C, comprising a base-line c,a major meridian c', and a minor meridian c2. Each of these lines is provided with a series of tangentially-arranged circles c5, the lines forming the diameters of the circles, the diameter of each circle being equal to nine degrees of the base-line or meridian, and the circles bear numerals above their diameters from 0 to 9 and below their diameters from "0 to "90. The circles bearing the numeral 0 are at the apex of the dome and at the junction of the major meridian with the base-line, while the circles bearing the numerals 9 and 90 are at the junctions of the minor meridian with the base-line. Lines c3, parallel with the base-line, cut the centers of the circles on the major and minor meridians, and meridians ci cut the center of the circles on the base-line and at the apex.
Graduated sights D D', the former provided Vwith cross-wires and the latter with a perforated disk, are slidably mounted in countersunk brackets Z d at the front and rear of the base to one side of the dome. A compass E is mounted in an opening e in the base in front of the dome and is'provided with a-sliding shield e for covering the same 'when not in use, and a scale F is secured to the upper face of the base at the rear of the domes.
yFor the protection of the domes a shield Gr is provided comprising the ring g, having the flange g fitting in the countersunk recess g2 in the upper face of the base and the spherical segments g3, separated by intervals g4, which are intended to register with the major and minor meridians. A plate-spring g5, secured to the base, rests upon one side of the capiange, and a screw Q6, having a mutilated head, engages the opposite side of the iiange to retain the cap in place.
In assembling my device the domes are secured together and sealed, and a spirit or ing, for instance, the sights are raised, and the base is leveled by means of the levelingscrews until the air-bubble coincides with the IOO IIO
circle atthe apeX of the dome. The base is then alined with the object, and the horizontal angle is obtained from the compass. To 0btain the angle-of inclination of an object, the dome should be level with respect to the base. The base is then placed iiat on the inclined object, and the deviation of the bubble from the apex will be the angle of inclination. The angle of elevation of trees, buildings, or other objects may be obtained in a similar manner.
It will be evident from the description that my combination-tool is capable of many uses. It may be used as a level to level in all directions without moving the tool. The diiference between low and high points in degrees may also be determined. The tool may be used as a plumb to plumb at any angle desired Without moving the same and to determine the amount of angular deviation of objects. The tool may be used to level or plumb one way and any angle desired at right angles at the same time without moving the tool.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an apparatus of the character specied, the combination of a base provided with a central circular recess, a metallic disk in the recess, means for leveling the disk, a gasket on the disk, an inner dome on the gasket provided with a circumferential fiange and a circumferential groove above the flange, a gasketring on the l'iange, an outer transparent dome provided with a flange resting on the gasketring and a circumferential groove, and iitting over and spaced apart from the inner dome, a liquid within the space between the domes, an air-bubble being provided, means within the grooves for sealing the domes, bolts for securing the domes together, the inner dome being provided with a graduated base-line on the convex face thereof, comprising four quadrants of ninety degress, and a major meridian cutting the base-line, and with a series of tangential circles of nine degrees diameter arranged with their diameters on the base-line, and a major meridian, and bearing numerals above the line from O to 9 and below the line from O to 90, the circles bearing the numeral O being at the apex of the dome and at the junction of the base-line and meridians, and with a minor meridian at right angles to the major meridian, and provided with a series of tangential circles similarly arranged and numbered to the circles on the major meridian, and with lines parallel with the base-line and cutting the centers of the circles of the meridians, and with lines parallel with the meridians cutting the centers of the circles on the base-line, countersunk brackets at the front and rear of the base and in line with each other, lgraduated sights slidably mounted in the i, brackets, the front sight provided with cross- 'wires, and the rear sight witha perforated disk,"a compass in an opening in the base and` in front of the domes, and a scale secured to the upper face of the base behind the dome.
2. In an apparatus of the character speciiied, the combination of abase provided with a central circular recess, a metallic disk in the recess, means for leveling the disk, a gasket on the disk, an inner dome on the gasket, an outer transparent dome fitting over and spaced apart from the inner dome, a liquid within the space between the domes, an air-bubble being provided, means for sealing the domes, means for securing the domes in the base, the inner dome being provided with a graduated base` line on the convex face thereof, and a major meridian cutting the base-line, and with a series of tangential circles of nine degrees diameter arranged with their diameters on the base -line and major meridian, and bearing numerals above the lines from O to 9, and below the lines from O to 90, the circles bearing the numeral O being at the apex of the dome and at the junctions of the base-line and meridian, and with a minor meridian at right angles to the said major meridian and provided with a series of tangential circles arranged and numbered similarly to the circles on the major meridian, and with a series of lines parallel with the base-line and cutting the centers of the circles on the meridians, and with a series of lines parallel with themeridian and cutting the centers of the circles on the baseline, movable sights at the front and rear of the base and in line with each other, a compass in front of the dome, and a scale at the rear of the dome on the upper surface of the base.
3. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a base, a metallic disk in a recess in the base, means for leveling the disk, a gasket on the disk, an inner dome on the gasket, an outer transparent dome fitting over and spaced apart from the inner dome, a liquid within the Space between the domes, an air-bubble being provided, means for sealing the domes, the inner dome being provided with a graduated base-line on the convex face thereof, and a major meridian cutting the base-line, and with a series of tangential circles ot' nine degrees diameter, arranged with their diameters on the base-line and major meridian, and bearing numerals above the lines from O to 9, and below the lines from O to 90, the circles bearing the numeral O being at the apex of the dome, and at the junction of the base-line and meridian, and with a minor meridian at right angles to the said major meridian, and provided with a series of tangential circles numbered and arranged similarly to the circles on the major meridian, parallels and meridians cutting the centers of the circles on the major and minor meridians on the base-line respectively and a compass and a scale secured in the upper face of the base.

scribed, the combination. of a base, alnetallic disk within a recess in the base, means for leveling the disk, an inner domeresting on the disk, an outer transparent dome fitting over and spaced apart `from the inner dome, a liquid within the space between the domes, an air-bubble being provided, the inner dome being provided with a graduated base-line on theconvex face thereof and a major meridian cutting the base-line and with a series of tangential circles of nine degrees diameter, arranged with their diameters on the base-line and major meridian and bearing numerals above the lines from O to 9, and below the line from Oto 90, the circles bearing the numera-1 0 being at the apex'oithe dome, and at the junctions of the base-line and meridian, and with a minor meridian at right angles to the said major meridian, and provided with a series ot' tangential circles numbered and arranged similarly to the circles on the major meridian, and a compass and a scale secured to the upper surface of the base.
5. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a base, an inner dome resting within a recess in the base, an outer transparent dome fitting over and spaced apart from the inner dome, a liquid within the space between the domes, an air-bubble being provided, the inner dome being provided with a graduated base-line on the convex face thereof, and a major meridian cutting the base-line, and with a series of tangential circles of nine degrees diameter, arranged with their diameters on the base-line and major meridian, and bearing numerals above the line from 0 to 9, and below the line from 0 to 90, the circles bearing the numeral 0 being at the apex of the dome, and at the junction of` the base-line and meridian, and with a minor meridian at right angles to said major meridian and provided with a series of tangential circles numbered and arranged similarly to the circles on the major meridian, and means for leveling the domes with respect to the base.
6. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a base, inner and outer domes resting on the base and spaced apart from each other, a liquid within the space between the domes, an air-bubble being provided, the inner dome being provided with a graduated base-line on the convex face thereof, a major meridian cutting the base-line, and with a series of tangential circles of nine degrees diameter, arranged with their diameters on the base-line and major meridian and bearing numerals above the lines from 0 to 9 and below the lines from O to 90, the circles bearing the numeral() being at the apex of the dome and at the junction of the base-line and meridian, and with a minor meridian at right angles to the said major meridian and provided with a series of tangential circles numbered and arranged similarly to the circles on the major meridian, means for sealing the domes, and means for leveling the domes with respect to the base.'
7. In an apparatus of the character ,described the combination of a base, an inner and outer dome spaced apart and secured to the base, the inner dome being provided with a graduated base-line on the convex face thereof and a major meridian cutting the base-line and with a series of tangential circles of nine degrees diameter arranged with their diameters on the base-line and major meridian, and bearing numerals above the line from O to 9, and below the line from 0 to 90, the circles bearing the numeral O being at the apex of the dome, and at the junction of the base-line and meridian, and with a minormeridianat right angles to said major meridian, and provided with a series of tangential circles numbered and arranged similarly to the circles on the major meridian, a liquid within the space between the domes, an air-bubble being provided of a diameter equal to that of the circles, and adapted to coincide therewith, and means for leveling the domes with respect to the base.

In an apparatus of the character described the combination of-a base, an inner and outer dome spaced apart and resting upon the base, the inner dome being provided with a graduated base-line on the convex face thereof, and a major meridian cutting the baseline, and with a series of tangential circles of nine degrees diameter, arranged with their diameters on the base-line and major meridian, andwith a minor meridian at right angles to roo said major meridian, and provided with a se- 'outer domes spaced apart and resting on the base, the inner dome being provided with a graduated base-line on the convex face thereof, and a major meridian cutting the base-line and with a minor meridian at right angles to said major meridian and with each of the lines provided with a series of tangential circles of nine degrees diameter, and arranged with their diameters on the lines, a liquid within the space between the domes, an air-bubble being provided of a diameter corresponding to that of the circles, and means for leveling the domes with respect to the base.

In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a base, an inner and outer dome spaced apart and resting on TIO the base, a liquid Within the space between p the domes, an air-bubble being provided, the inner dome being provided With a graduated base-line on the convex face thereof, and major and minor meridians cutting the base-line and with a series of tangential circles of nine degrees diameter arranged with their centers on the lines and means for leveling the domes with respect to the base.

In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a base, an inner and outer dome spaced apart and resting upon the base, the inner dome being provided with a graduated base-line on the convex face thereof and major and minor meridians cutting the base-line, a shield for the domes comprising a metallic cap, resting on the base, and provided With an opening at its apex and with radial openings corresponding to the major and minor meridians of the dome, and means for removably securing the shield to the base.
