BUTTER-CUTTING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1905.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. M. V. Ro'r'rln- GER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the city and county of New York and. State of New -York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Butter-Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for cutting butter, soap, dough, and other material. Its organization comprises a trough for the material, at one end of which is located a frame that supports wires for dividing the material in planes parallel to the longitudinal axis of the trough. A cutter actuates on the outer face of the said frame to cut off the cakes as they are forced through the cutting-wires by a pusher.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of the invention. Fig. 2 shows a top plan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a left-hand side view of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a a view similar to Fig. 1 with the movable parts in a different position.
A trough is represented at A with the side walls a a and bottom a all of which are joined with the frame A, that supports the dividing-wire B, the latter being fastened at and passing through an opening at b, then extending across the face of the frame to b, and then running on the outside of the frame to b", after which it again crosses the face of the frame to c where a small nut b secures the said dividing-Wire B and allows the same to be made taut.
From the frame A extend the legs 0 C, the latter being arranged to encircle the end of a support or table C A clamping-screw C passes through the bottom member of the leg C, by means of which the device can be securely held in place. From the leg G extends a journal-bracket C to which is journaled on the pivot cl the operating bell-crank D with its handle d. The lower arm D of the bell-crank is curved to form a heel (1 although'the latter may be omitted by a variation in the disposition of the parts of the invention. From the wall a of the trough extends the bracket E, which latter joins with the leg 0. A lever F is journaled from the bracket E on the pivot E, and a cutter-frame G extends from the said lever F, a cutterwire 9 being strung from the ends of the cutter-frame G, and the combination of the lever F and cutter-frame G, with its wire, I herein designate as a cutter. A pin f projects from the inner face of the lever F and engages the slotted end 71. of a link H, the walls of the extreme end portion of the slotted end being straight and vertical when in the position shown in Fig. 4. The link at its opposite end is journaled to the lower arm D of the bellcrank D by means of the pivot h. From the end of the lever F extends the lug f that is engaged by a pin e, projecting from the bracket E, and a spring I, fastened to the bracket E, winds about the journal, pin E and abuts under the end of the cutter-frame G to automatically restore the latter to its normal position after having been moved therefrom. A releasing-pin f also extends from the said bracket E.
A U-shaped lever J is journaled from the side a, of the trough on the pivot J. It has the arms J J extending from its main portion, in which former is a slot J, from which there can be adjustably journaled on the pin 8 the rack-bar Kwith the teeth K. From the same side of the trough there is supported the guide-bar L by means of the brackets L. On the said guidebar L is carried a sleeve M with the tooth m, which latter is engaged by the teeth K. The sleeve M has extendin from it the arm m that carries the pusher the side a and facing-plate O,having a suitable slot for the said arm. The inside of the trough is generally lined with the stationary facing-plates O O and the adjustable plate 0 From the latter extend the bolts P, that pass through the lugs Q, which extend from the trough, the nuts P allowing the plate 0 to be adjusted in different operative positions.
To use the invention, the material, like butter is placed in the trough and well pushed forward to touch the dividing-wire B in the frame A, the position of the parts being as represented in Fig. 1. The bell-crank D is then moved to the left, as shown by the arrow, until the parts take the position shown in Fig. 4, by which the cutter-frame G is moved to its lower position, and when the bell-crank D is moved a little farther to the left the pin disengages the pin f from the end of the slotted end it of the link H and allows the lever F, with the cutter G, to assume a vertical position, and at the same time the heel (Z of the arm D moves the lower arm of the link J, which causes the upper arm of the link J to move to the right, Fig. 3, and the teeth K, engaging with the tooth m, pull the pusher n toward the frame A, and thereby forces a portion of the butter through the dividing-wires in said frame A. When the I bell-crank, and consequently the cutterpushed to the left, to a frame G, with its cutting-w1re g, down again the butter or other material which has been pushed through the dividingwires is cut off, and the toothed rack K is ain become engaged with the pin m in anot er place. The rack K, being journaled in the slot J of the lever J, allows the stroke of the said rack to be varied, as the distance from the pin J to the pin 8 can be changed.
It is evident that the dividing-wire B can be arranged in the frame A to divide the butter or other material passing there through in portions of different sizes by changing the location of the said wire B and the adjustable plate 0 If it is desired to operate the cutter with the cutting-wire 9 independently of the pusher N,
is pulled the rack-lever K is disconnected from the le' ver J and the pusher is pushed in the trough A by the operator pressing on the handle m of the sleeve M.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. The combination of atrough, dividingwires on one end thereof, a cutter j ournaled at said end, a link adjustably connected with the cutter, means to move the cutter past the said dividing-wires in the end of the trough, means to release the link from the cutter, and means to restore the cutter to its original po sition.
2. The combination of a trough, dividingwires on one end thereof, a lever carrying a cutter j ournaled at one end of the trough and on one side thereof, a bell-crank journaled on the other side of the trough, a link connecting the bell-crank and the said lever, a releasing-pin adjacent to the lever and in the path of the link, to release the latter from the said lever.

and near the said end thereof, a bell-crank journaled in the path of the said lever and adapted to actuate the same, a'rack-bar journaled on said lever, a guide-bar supported adjacent to one side of the trough, a sleeve on the guide-bar arranged to engage with the rack-bar and a pusher in the trough connected with said sleeve.
4. The combination of a trough, dividingwires on one end thereof, a bracket extending thereof, a lever a cutter journaled on the said from the trough on one side carrying bracket, a pin extending from the lever, a spring interposed between the lever and bracket to restore the lever with its cutter in a vertical position, a releasing-pin extending from the bracket, a second bracket extending from the trough and on the other side thereof, a bell-crank j ournaled to the second bracket, a link connecting the bell-crank and the lever journaled to the said first bracket, the link moving in the path of the said releasing-pin, and a pusher in the trough actuated by virtue of the movements of the bellcrank.
5. The combination of a trough, dividingwires on one end thereof, a cutter on said end, a lever with arms journaled at one side of the trough and near the said end thereof, a bellcrank journaled in the path of the arms of said lever and adapted to move the latter, a rack-bar adjustably j ournaled in a slot in the lever having the arms, a guide-bar supported adjacent to the outside of the trough, a sleeve on the bar, a pusher in the trough connected with said sleeve, a tooth extending from the sleeve and arranged to mesh with the teeth of the rack-lever.
6. The combination of a trough, dividing- Wires on one end thereof, a sprin -actuated cutter on said end, a pusher in t e trough, and a handle on the pusher to actuatethe latter.
7. The combination of a trough, dividingwires on one end thereof, a cutter-frame with a cutting-wire at one end of the trough, a spring to restore the cutter-frame with its wire in a vertical position, a lever journaled near the end of the trough and carrying a cutter-frame, a link journaled to the lever on a pin extending from the latter, means to move the link with the said lever, cutter frame and wire, from a vertical position across the end of the trough to a horizontal position, a pin in the path of the link to disengage the said link from the lever with which it is ournaled, and thereby allow the cutter-frame with its appurtenances to return to a vertical position, and a pusher in the trough.
8. The combination of a trough, dividingwires on one end thereof, stationary plates in the trough, an adjustable plate in the trough, a cutter actuating on one end of the trough, a pusher in the trough, and means to actuate the latter.
