Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1905.
Application filed gust 3, 1905- Serial No. 272.490.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT E. ATKINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norfolk, in thecounty of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Disk Harrows and Levelers, of which the following is a specificatlon.
My invention relates to disk harrows and the like.
The invention has for one of itsobjects to provide means for smoothing and leveling the soil and removing the clods.
Another object of my invention is to rovide suitable bearing-hangers for the iskshafts. 7
With these and other objects in view my invention. consists of certain improvements shown. in simple and convenient embodiments in the drawings forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a plan of the harrow and its attached mechanism. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line 1 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a part sectional elevation taken on the line 3 4 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the disk-shaft bearing-hanger. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 6 is a part front elevation of the angular or V-shaped deflector or smoothin -board, and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the slotted angular corner pieces or straps.
In the drawings like reference-numerals indicate similar parts in all the views.
1 and 1 are the horizontal frame or side members, which are joined by the transverse or end members 2 and 3 and are fastened together by the bolts or screws 4.
5 is a center transverse beam fastened to the side pieces 1 and 1 by the bolts or screws 6.
7 and 7 A are the frame members of the leveling or smoothing board, and have the form of a flattened V in plan and are arranged at an angle or sloping within the frame side or joint 8 is provided with a projecting ear or lug 9, having a slot 9 therein, through which passes the bolt 10, fastened to the center beam 5, (therefore permitting of a vertical adjustment,) which is secured at the proper point by the nut, as shown in Fig. 6.
11 represents the slotted angular or corner plates havin apertures 12 therein for securing them to t e side frame members 1 and 1, also slots 13, into which the bolts 13 pass and allows for vertical adjustment and securing the same in the same manner as the front portion carrying the joint or junction plate 8 and coincident therewith in its movement.
As described, the leveling members are capable of being adjusted to suit conditions met with where such a device is desirable.
- 14 is a rib joining the two parts of the plate 11 in order to give strength to the same.
15 and 16 are the front disks supported by the shafts 17 and 18, respectively.
19 and 20 are the rear disks, likewise supported by the shafts 21 and 22, 22 being spindles to adapt the shafts to be supported in bearings, as the main shafts 17, 18, 21, and 22 are usually made of wood, and therefore much largerin diameter than the. spindles 22 22 is an aperture in the boss or sleeved portion of the hangers or'bearings 24 for the spindle ends 22 and forming a bearing or journal therefor, 24 also indicating the main bogy or web portion of the hangers, Figs. 4 an '5.
The hangers are suitably secured to the I side pieces 1 and 1"} by the bolts 24, Fig. 4, being a rib to give additional strength to the sleeved portion 23.
The operation of the invention has been sufliciently described in order to be fully understood by those skilled in the art to which it applies, so that further description is not necessary in addition to that given in describing the various parts. appertaining thereto.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a disk harrow a main frame inclosing a V-shaped frame attached to the side and center bars for deflecting the earth from.
the center to the sides thereof, substantially as described.
2. In a disk harrow, a plurality of diskcarrying shafts, a main frame inclosing a V- shaped frame attached to the side and center bars for deflecting the earth from the center to the sides thereof to clear the path of the IIO rear diskcarrying shafts; substantially as described. 7
3. In a disk harrow a main frame, a slantingly-disposed V-shaped frame attached to the side and center bars of the main frame for deflecting the earth from the center to the sides of the main frame, and a plurality of rows of disks at each end of the said V- shaped frame, substantially as described.
4. In a disk harrow, a main frame inclosing a V-shaped frame attached to the side and center bars for deflecting the earth from the center to the sides thereof, said V-shaped frame having its apeXin the direction of travel of said main frame, and a plurality of disks at each end of said Vshaped frame, substantially as described.
5. In a disk harrow a main frame inclosing an inclined V-shaped frame attached to the side and center members of said main frame, a plurality of rows of disks at each end of the said V-shaped frame, and means for vertically adjusting the said frame, substantially as described.
6. In a disk harrow a main frame inclosing a V-shaped slantinglydisposed frame adjustably fitted to the side and center members thereof, a V-shaped slotted plate at the apex of the said V-shaped frame, a set of slotted corner-plates at the ends of said V-shaped frame, and means for deflecting the earth to both sides of the said V-shaped frame.
7. In a disk harrow a mainframe inclosing an inclined adjustable V-shaped frame, a series of disk-carrying shafts, a series of bearing hangers or journals for the said shafts comprising a web or plate portion, a sleeved portion thereon placed at or below the lower edge of the sides of the said main frame, and a brace-bar connecting the said sleeved and the web portions, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto'affixed my signature, in the presence of two witnesses, this 22d day of June, A. D. 1905.
ROBERT E. ATKINSON.
