Description

No. 807,219. PATENTED DEC. 12, 1905. G. THUMM. COMBINED GARBAGE GREMATOR AND WATER HEATER.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 17.1905.
1,2 Inventor Ju/Wm.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GOTTLIEB THUMM, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED GARBAGE-CREMATOR AND WATER-HEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1905.
Application filed July 17, 1905. Serial No. 269,919.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GoTTLInB THUMM, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in a Combined Garbage (Jremator and Water Heater, of which the following is a full, clear, and correct description, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, formingapart hereof, and in Which Figure 1 shows my said device in transverse section on the plane m m of Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 shows a longitudinal section of said device on the plane w w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows a fragment of the right-hand part of the end 0 below the plane y of Fig. 1.
Like reference letters and figures denote like parts throughout.
The object of my invention is to produce a garbage-cremator, combined with a waterheater, of simple and inexpensive construction and wherein repairs may be made easily and cheaply and in which the heat produced to burn the garbage shall heat the hot water for the building.
To attain said desirable ends, I construct my said new apparatus in substantially the following manner, namely: I make a cast-. iron element or hollow-unit element consisting of the two uprights 1 2 and atop trans verse element 3, which are in form like the letter U inverted. The elements 1 2 3 collectively form the U-shaped element a, of which there may be more or less in number, according to'the length of the furnace and. the amount of Water to be heated. Said elements a are connected by push-nipples b, which collectively form two upper and two lower Water-passages from end to end of the boiler. The same element a forms the two end elements 0 and d, in which, however, the sides 6 and f are the continuation of the sides 1 2 3, which thereby form inner and outer end plates 6 and f of the end elements 0 and d, as shown in Fig. 3, there being a slight ofiset or recess of the surface of the wallse f from the surface of the parts 1 2 3, as shown. The inner parts f of said end parts receive the ends of water-tubes g, which are also fitted to place without threads, like the push nipples, and said tubes are placed near enough to make a good garbage-grate for the garbage fed onto them through the upperdoor 4:. Said tubes collectively form a grate 72 which extends only part way across the width of the furnace-chamber or width between the elements 1 and 2, for the purpose of leaving free passages between the edges of said grate h and the inner edges of the parts 1 and 2 for the purpose of forming a smoke-passage from the fuel-grate outside of the garbage-chamber side plates j, so as to deflect the smokeand heat from the fuel-grate from the top of the fuel-chamber down upon the garbage and to thereby cause quick drying of the garbage and the conversion .of the same into fuel.
Spurs it: hold the plates j at their upper edges, and at each of the lower edges of said plates there is a foot Z, which partly embraces the water-tube on which it stands, and by 'means of said foot the side plates of the garbage-furnace may be set inward or outward, and thus the width of the garbage-grate can be widened or-narrowed at pleasure.
Fuel is fed upon the grate through the door 5 and the ash-pit is cleaned through the door 6.
Threadedrods m pass centrally through the four lines of nipples 6 and through the sides 6, and therewith all the assembled parts a c d are drawn together and held firmly to place.
The manner of making the attachment to the hot-water tank is not shown, as it is a matter well known to every one that such attachment must vary according to surrounding conditions. By means of this construction a good water circulation is provided, and repairs are easily and very quickly made without skilled labor or long delay. The said connected elements a 0 01' are here shown standing on a brick foundation which also forms the ash-pit. v
What I claim is 1. The combination with water holding ends of a water-heater and U-shaped waterholding elements, intermediate said ends, unthreaded tubular-nipple connections between said ends and intermediate parts, and between said intermediate parts, a garbage-grate of unthreaded water-tubes connecting said ends, and means to hold said ends and intermediate parts together, of side plates, laterally adjustable, on said grate, and means to hold said plates to form a smoke-passage between said plates and the furnace-chamber walls.
2. The combination with a water-heater having water-holding sides, ends and top, forming a chamber, a fuel-grate, and a garbagegrate over said grate, narrower than said chamber, of side platesbetween the edges of said upper grate and chamber sides, and means to hold said plates to form a smoke-passage plates over said narrow grate, and means to between said plates and chamber sides. hold said plates, to form a smoke-passage be- 3. The combination Withawater-heater havtween them and the chamber-Walls. ing" Water-holding sides, ends, and top, form- GOTTLIEB THUMM. 5 ing a chamber, a fuel-grate, and a grate over Witnesses:
said grate, narrower than said chamber, and WM. ZIMMERMAN,
connecting the ends of said chamber, of side LEWIS FQCLARKE.
