Description

UNITED sTAT s PATENT orrron.
VAGINAL GLASS APPLICATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1905.
Application filed June 25, 1904. $erial No. 214,102.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LJMAURIOE B. PEARLSTIEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Vaginal Glass Applicator, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the means of alleviating all forms of chronic or passive inflammations of the vaginal or uterine canal and its appendages. Formerly this object was sought to be attained'by efiecting hot or cold applications by means of a syringe, nozzle, or the so-called vaginal douche, whereby hot or cold water was introduced into the vagina; but that process, while slightly diminishing such inflammation, is attended with considerable discomfort in the use of it,-
because it necessitates repeated applications of the syringe, nozzle, or douche to attain any result and ordinarily requires the patient to make such applications while in a bath-tub,.
and, moreover, such hot or cold, moist or wet applications, although momentarily relieving the patient, produce an esurient effect on her,
who acquires an almost irresistible desire for repeated applications, and by the use of the numerous vaginal irrigators the natural secretions are invariably washed away and the mucous membrane of the vaginal canal becomes irritated, often resulting in septic poisoning of the uterus, because the nozzle, the flow of water, or both, will find their way into the uterine canal, and thus act as a foreign body. I attain this object by means of dry applications of hot or cold water, according to the acuteness of the inflammation, which is made possible by the vaginal glass applicator which I have invented for that purpose.
Figure 1 in the accompanying drawings represents the vaginal glass applicator, and Fig. Qin the drawings represents the applicator with the rubber tubes and water-bag hereinafter described attached.
The vaginal glass applicator, Fig. 1, in the accompanying drawings, consists of an outer closed tube with an inner open tube, made of glass, preferably Vienna glass, which is less brittle and less subject to bursting from heat.
As is shown in the accompanying drawings, the vaginal glass applicator is of a length, curve, and thickness to fit. the normally constructed vagina. It may be made of other sizes, as may be required. The applicator is slightly curved in shape for the better access into the canal and has a depressed end 0 in Figs. 1 and 2, so that when the applicator is introduced into the vagina and then pushed upward and backward until it finds its way to the posterior cul-de-sac the cervix uteri will rest upon the depressed end of the applicator.
The outer tube of the applicator contains a narrow inner tube D in Figs. 1 and 2, extending to the end which is depressed, as aforesaid, and beginning with a curved or crooked neck A for the purpose of fitting thereto an ordinary soft-rubber tube F, leading to an ordinary water-bag E, containing hot or cold water. The neck A is curved for the purpose of separating it as much as possible from the other neck B of the outer tube of the applicator, which is placed there for the purpose of obtaining an outflow of the hot or cold water circulating in the applicator from the waterbag, and to that end another soft-rubber tube G is attached to the neck B, so as to lead ofi the water thus constantly circulating in the vaginal glass applicator to any convenient vesse] or receptacle. By means of the inner tube a perfect circulation of the water is secured, thus maintaining an equal temperature throughout the applicator. An even temperature is thus produced in the entire length of the vaginal glass applicator by the constant circulation therein of hot or cold water, as the case may be, from the water-bag, which may be of a temperature to suit the patient.
Hot application to the vaginal or uterine ca nal and its appendages is of the utmost value in all forms of chronic or passive inflammations, especially when accompanied by displacements of the uterus. Dry heat is more stimulating, less irritating, and may be used with greater safety and benefit to the patient than wet applications. The introduction of the vaginal glass applicator into the vaginal canal is easy of accomplishment, and dry-heat applications thereby effected alleviate'all such infiammations spoken of, especially when such inflammations are accompanied by displacements of the uterus, except when the inflamnozzle, the flow of water, or both, acting as a foreign body, and since the temperature in the entire applicator is always even by reason of the constant flow of such hot or cold water therein as will suit the particular .patient it may be kept in place in the canal a sufiicient time to reduce or alleviate such inflammations, thus obviating entirely the necessity for repeated introductions of the nozzle or the douche and the consequent friction and irritation of the mucous membrane of the canal. Moreover, dry-heat applications, thus made feasible by means of the vaginal glass applicator, produce more beneficial results in curing such distempers for the reasons already stated and also because the applications are constant and not intermittent, and are thus much more stimulating.
There is also another advantage which is obtained by means of the vaginal glass applicatorto Wit, the greater comfort with which the applications can be madefor the applications being dry they may be made in any place in a lying posture, not requiring at all the use of a bath-room for that purpose.
I do not claim as my invention any tube with a circulation of water therein by means of an inner tube; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A vaginal glass applicator, consisting of a glass tube, slightly curved, and with its end depressed for the purpose of warm or cold vaginal applications, fitted with an inner tube for the purpose of circulation of Water therein, as hereinbefore described, and also with tWo necks for the inflow and outflow of such water, substantially as hereinbefore described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presenceof two subscribing Witnesses.
MAURICE B. PEARLSTIEN.
