Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. OoRBnTT, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State `of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hoisting or Logging Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hoisting or logging devices; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction thereof, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, as follows:
tion-cone c is fixed to rotate with said driv-' ing-gear. The drum D is also mounted'on the shaft B, and it has the friction-band LZ for operating on the cone c. The spring E tends to hold the friction-surfaces out of contact. A collar F is arranged on the shaft B against the drum D. A key Gr extends through the slot Z in the shaft B and engages the collar F. The shaft B has an attaching portion B', on which the clutch-actuating mechanism may be arranged outside of the bearing c'. The pin H extends through an opening b in the end of the shaft and is adapted to communicate the thrust of the actuating mechanism to the drum D through the key G and collar F, the drum D being moved axially on the shaft B to bring the clutch-surfaces into contact. These parts of the mechanism are not new and are shown in my former patent, dated April 15, 1902, No. 697,913.
It is desirable to have some simple mechanism that can be attached to devices of this character already in use and also to make a simple mechanism for devices of this character when finished complete at the shop.
The carrier I is screwed onto the attaching portion Bl of' the shaft B. A flange-plate I is bolted to the end of the carrier I. The carrier is inthe form of a sleeve, and the flangeplate I extends beyond the inner face of the sleeve, forming a shoulder i. A nut J is journaled in the iiange-plate l. It has the shoulder j, which is opposed to the shoulder c'. A roller-bearing o r rolling bearing-washer yis interposed between the shoulders.
This washer consists of the disks j", the roller f2, and spreading-ring f3, the latter holding the roller in place. The nut .I is internally screwthreaded and is locked against rotation by means of a clamp K, the clamp K having the arm Z0, which is secured to or abuts against some stationary part of the frame. A screw L operates in the nut J and has the head Z- provided with means for applying a wrench. A pin Z extends into the socket L in the end of the screw, as shown in Fig. 4.. A hardened' screw L2 closes the socket L. As many pins Z7 as desired may be arranged in the screw. The pin Zl abuts a second pin Z2, which is carried in the nut, but is free to rotate in the nut. The end of the nut has preferably a cavity J', in which is arranged a roller-bearing washer comprising the disks Z3, rollers Z4, and spreading-ring Z5. The roller washer abuts the pin H.
In the operation of the device the spring E normally keeps the clutch-surfaces out of engagement. When it is desired to set the clutch, the screw L is turned in. The thrust from the screw is communicated through the pins Z Z2, roller-washer, and pin H to the key Gr. The counter thrust of the nut comes on the shoulder c' and the friction between the shoulders Z and j is relieved Vby the rollerwasher heretofore described.
The pins in themselves reduce very materially the friction in that they form different points of movement, so that the movement on each one is quite slow as compared with that of the shaft. I prefer, however, to have not only the pins, but also the roller-washer, as shown. A reverse action of the screw releases the clutch, the spring moving the drum on the shaft to accomplish this purpose. The clamp K holds the nut in a stationary position, so that the screw can be readily operated to set. the clutch or to release the clutch. The disk j', roller f2, and spreading-ring f3 are the same in construction as similar parts marked j, f6, and f7. (Shownin enlarged view in Fig. 3.) In the alternative construction (shown in Fig. 3) the roller-washer formed with the disk Z3 is omitted and the relief from excessive frictional resistance is accomplished through the thrust-pins alone. In it the nut J2 has the shoulder y, which opposes the shoulder t'. A roller-bearing washer is interposed between the shoulders, said washer comprising the disks v?, rollers js, and spreadingring jl. The pin Z in the end of the screw engages a pin Z, which is journaled in the nut, and this acts directly upon the pin H.
It is desirable to do away with side thrust on the bearing. This is accomplished by this device, the bearing carrying the drum being entirely free from side thrust. By making the thrust-screw hollow and placing pins in the socket so formed the device is made very compact. Where only the thrust-pins are used, there is some danger of their heating. In the preferred construction this is entirely obviated.

In a hoisting or logging device the combination with the main bearings; the shaft journaled in said bearings and having an attaching end; a driving friction-wheel mounted on said shaft; a drum mounted on said shaft; a driven frictionwheel locked against rotation relatively to said drum said driving and driven friction-wheels being adapted to be brought into frictional engagement by an axial movement of one of them; thrusting devices in the attaching end of the shaft, extending from without the bearing to within the bearing; a connection between said thrust devices and the one of the friction.- wheels free to move axially into engagement; of an apparatus mounted on` the attaching portion of the shaft for actuating said thrust devices comprising a sleeve-shaped carrier having an internally-ianged shoulder; a nut having an external shoulder opposed to the shoulder on the flange; a screw in the nut adapted to exert thrust on said thrust devices; and a rollerbearing interposed between the internallyflanged shoulder on the carrier, and the external shoulder on the nut.

In a hoisting or logging device the combination with the main bearings; the shaft journaled in said bearings and having an attaching end; a driving friction-wheel mounted on said shaft; a drum mounted on said shaft; a driven friction-wheel locked against rotation relatively to said drum, said driving and driven friction-wheels being adapted to be brought into frictional engagement by an axial movement of one of them; thrusting devices in the attaching end of the shaft, extending from without the bearing to within the bearing; a connection between said thrust devices and the one of the friction-wheels free to move axially into engagement; of an apparatus mounted on the attaching portion of the shaft for actuating said thrust devices comprising a sleeve-shaped carrier attached to the end of the shaft having an internal flanged shoulder; a nut having an opposing shoulder and journaled in the flanged end of the carrier, said nut having a cavity; a roller-bearing washer arranged in said cavity; and a screw in said nut arranged to exert force on said thrust devices, the roller-bearing washer being interposed between the screw and said devices.

In a hoisting or logging device the combination with the main bearings; the shaft journaled in said bearings and having an attaching end; a driving friction-wheel mounted on said shaft; a drum mounted on said shaft; a driven friction-wheel locked against rotation relatively to said drum,said d riving and driven friction-wheels being adapted to be brought into frictional engagement by an axial movement of one of them; thrusting devices in the attaching end of the shaft, extending from without the bearing to Within the bearing; and a connection between said thrust devices and the one of the friction-wheels free to move axially into engagement; of an apparatus mounted on the attaching portion of the shaft for ac' tuating said thrust devices comprising the carrier I secured on the end of the shaft and having the flanged plate I' forming the shoulder the nut J journaled in the iiange-plate and having the shoulder j opposing the shoulder c' said nut also having a cavity J', at its inner end; a roller-bearing interposed between the shoulders j and the screw L arranged in the nut; means for locking the nut J from rotating with the carrier; a roller-bearing washer arranged in the cavity of the nut; said rollerbearing washer being arranged to act upon said thrust devices; and a loose pin arranged between the screw and washer. f

In a hoisting or logging device the combination with the main bearings; the shaft journaled in said bearings and having an attaching end; a driving friction-wheel mounted on said shaft; a drum mounted on said shaft; a driven friction-wheel locked against rotation relatively to said drum,said driving and driven friction-wheels being adapted to be brought into frictional engagement by an axial movement of one of them; thrusting devices in the attaching end of the shaft, extending from without the bearing to within the bearing; and a connection between said thrust devices and the one of the friction-wheels free to move axially into engagement; of an apparatus mounted on the attaching portion of the shaft for actuating said thrust devices comprising a screw member fixed against axial movement relatively to the shaft, said screw member being mounted outside of the bearing, the shaft being free to rotate 'without rotating the screw member; and an active screw member arranged to operate with said relatively fixed screw member for exerting thrust on the thrust devices.
