To a whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, IRA J. BRADSHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at No. 139 Genesee street, in Waukegan, Lake county, Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Trolley-Contacts, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means of making electrical connection with annunciators for trolley-cars designed to be located in waiting-rooms for passengers, and comprises cer tain improvements in the mechanism shown in tclile two above-named patents hitherto issue The object of my present invention is to provide a new circuit-closing device to be used to close the circuit between the trolley- Wire and the electromagnets in the cases containing the annunciator described in the two above-named patents. I attain this object by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical central longitudinal section of the circuit-closing device. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same, taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the circuit-closing device with its cover removed. Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic view of the circuits by means of which the annunciator is operated.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, 10 is a bracket, to which are secured the parts of the mechanism designed for my new method of effecting the closing of the electric circuit between the trolley-wire and the annunciator. The bracket is U-shaped at one end, and the ends of the branches 11 of the U are formed with the necessary perforations, so the bracket can be bolted to the trolley-wire hanger on the span-wire of the electric railway, such bolts passing through any suitable insulating-washers 12, secured on both sides of the stems of the U. At the other end the bracket is formed with a slot 13, and through this passes a bolt 14, having secured on its lower end an open sleeve 15, which grasps the trolley-wire 16. Nuts secured on either side of this slot are insulated by passing their bolts through the above-named insulating- Washers.
In the bottom of the bracket, secured on a pivot passing through the sides of the same,
there is a trap 17, having secured at about its middle point a spring 18, which impinges against the bracket toward its U-shaped end.
A metal ball19 lies loosely on this trap.
. The electric wire 20 is secured to one side of the bracket by a metal bolt 21, which extends through the side, and this wire leads to one of the electromagnets in the annunciator. Another electric wire 22 is secured in like manner to the bolt 23, which passes through the other side of the bracket directly opposite to the bolt 21, and this wire at its other end is connected with the top of the bolt 14, and thus is in electrical connection with the trolley-wire.
24 is a lever pivoted in the lower part of the bracket, so as to hang below the same and to swing freely. On its upper end it is beveled from the edge nearest'to the U-shaped end of the bracket to its opposite edge. Its branches 24% at their lower ends allow the trolley-wire to pass between them. The lever is arranged'to swing toward the bolt 14. When the trolley passes along the wire, its flanges meet the branches of the lever, and the lever is thus swung upward.
The above-described mechanism is operated as follows: The case containing the annunciator and its immediatelyconnectedmechanism is located in any suitable manner in a passengers waiting-room, and bracket 10 is secured to a trolley-hanger on a spanwire of an electric railway at any suitable distance from the waiting-room, having one of its wires connected with the electromag nets and extending thence to the ground and the other connected with the bolt whose sleeve grasps the trolley-wire. Two brackets in reverse positions are located and connected in opposite directions from the waitingroom, so as to announce cars coming from both directions. The flanges of a trolley of a car moving toward the Ushaped end of the bracket come in'contact with the branches 24% of the lever 24 and swing the lever upward. The beveled end of the lever raises the curved end of the trap 17, thus rolling the metal ball 19 upward until it touches the bolts 21 and 23. Thus the circuit is closed from the trolley-wire through the bolts 21 and 23, the wires 20 and 22, the electromagnets in the case, and the ground, and the mechanism in the case is operated.

In the bracket of an electrical annunciator, substantially as described, the combination of the metal bolts, 21 and 23, passing through the sides of the bracket, the wires, 20 and 22 secured to .these bolts, the former leading to the electromagnets in the case which contains the annunciator, the latter leading to the bolt, 14:, electrically connected with the trolleywire, the trap 17, the ball, 19 and the spring, 18, secured to the trap and impinging against IRA J. BRADSHAW.
