W. F. FRASER. TYPE WRITER DESK. APPLICATION rum) r2120. 1905.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WARREN F. FRASER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OEONE- HALF TO ARTHUR ORPIN AND ONE-HALF TO FLETCHER ORPIN. OF
BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
TYPE-WRITER DESK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1905.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WARREN F. FRASER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Type-Writer Desks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention isto provide a cheap, strong, and durable type-writer desk in which the type-writer is supported upon a table and a cover is provided and attached thereto, so that when the cover is in a horizontal position, forming atop for the desk, the type-writer is moved back underneath said cover, the table to which it is attached standing at an angle thereto, and said type-writer is then inclosed within a substantially dustproof compartment.
The object of the invention is, further, to provide a type-writer desk of the character hereinbefore set forth in which the table and cover are connected by mechanism so constructedand designed that when the table is brought forward or thrown back it will come to a gradual stop without jarring the machine at the extremity of its movement in either direction, and said table will be locked against movement caused by pressure applied to the table in any direction.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the fol. lowing specification and particularly pointed out in the claims thereof.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section, partlyin elevation, of a type-writer desk constructed in accordance with my invention with the cover in its horizontal position and the type-writer table moved back beneath the cover and standing at an angle thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, partly in elevation, similar to Fig. 1, with the type-writer table in its horizontal position and the cover thrown back into its vertical position.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout both the views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 8 is a stationary deskframe, 9 a cover, and 10 a type-writer table. The mechanism by which the type-writer table and cover are actuated is duplicated at.
opposite ends of said table and cover, only one set of said mechanism being, however, illustrated in the drawings. At each end of the table 10 is fastened a bracket 11, pivoted at 12 to a plate 13, fast to the frame 8. Two levers 14 and 15 are pivoted at 16 and 17, respectively, to the frame 8. The lever 14 is provided with a slot 18, and through said slot projects a pin 19, which pin is fast to the lever 15, and thus forms a connection between said levers 14 and 15.
The lever 15 is pivotally connected at 20 to a bracket 21, fast to the under side of the cover 9. The lever 14 is connected by a link 22 to the bracket 11, which is rigidly fastened to the table 10 and forms, in effect, a part thereof. A supportingdink. 23 is pivoted at one end at24 to the frame 8 and at its opposite end at 25 to a bracket 26, fast to the under side of the table 10. Upon the under side of the table 10 and extending across the front thereof is a rail 27, and to said rail is attached a handle 28. A stationary supporting-shelf 29 is fastened to the frame 8 and helps to support the cover 9 when said. cover is in a vertioai position, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
The operation of my improved type-writer desk as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 is as follows: Assuming the parts to be in the position illustrated in Fig. 1, in which the cover 9 is in a horizontal position and forms a portion of the top of the desk and the table 10 is located beneath said cover and stands at an angle thereto, if it is desired to bring the type writer table to a horizontal position and to move the cover 9 to a vertical position at the rear thereof the handle 28 is grasped by the operator and the cover pushed upwardly and backwardly, tipping the lever 15 upon its pivot 17, while simultaneously the connecting-pin 19 moves downwardly in the slot 18, rocking the lever 14 upon its pivot 16 toward the front of the desk and pushing the ty ewriter table by means of the link 22 so t at the same tips upon its pivot '12, and the top of said table is brought to a horizontal position, as illustrated in Fig. 2, while the table-top finally assumes a vertical position, as illustrated in said Fig. 2. During the latter part of this operation the connecting-pin 19 travels upwardly in the slot 18, and during the last part of its movement said pin moves the lever 14: very slightly, thus bringing the typewriter table 10 and the type-writer which may be attached thereto to a gradual and gentle stop. The same is true in reversing too the movement from the position of parts as shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. 1, the latter part of the movement of the connecting-pin 19 in the slot 18 being such that the lever 14 is rocked very slightly and the typewriter table, with the type-writer attached thereto, and also the cover 9 are brought to a gradual stop, thus preventing any jarring of the machine or its parts.
It will be noted that when the parts are in the positions illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 any force exerted directly upon the type-writer table tending to rock the same upon its pivots will be counteracted by the links 22 and levers 14, said levers 14 being locked by pins 19, located upon a dead-center with the pivotal centers 17 of the levers 15.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire by Letters Patent to secure, is
1. In a type-writer desk a stationary frame, a type-writer table pivoted thereto, a movable cover, two levers pivoted to said frame, a connection joining said levers together, and two links, one of said links connecting one of said levers to said table, the other lever pivotally connected to said cover, the other of said links connecting said cover to said frame, said connection joining said levers together, being substantially on a dead-center with the pivot of said last-named lever when said cover is in a vertical or horizontal position.
2. In a type-writer desk, a stationary frame, a type-writer table pivoted thereto, a movable cover, two levers pivoted to said frame, one of said levers provided with a slot, said levers connected together by a pin projecting into and slidable in said slot, and two links one connecting said slotted lever to said table, the other lever pivotally connected to said cover, the other of said links connecting said cover to said frame, said pin being substantially on a dead-center with the pivot of said last-named lever when said cover is in a vertical or horizontal position and crossing a line joining the pivots of said levers when said cover is being moved from a horizontal to a vertical position and vice versa.
3. In a type-writer desk, a stationaryframe, a type-writer table pivoted thereto, a movable cover, alever provided with a slot pivoted to said frame, a link connecting said slotted lever to said table, a supporting-link pivoted at one end to the rear portion of said cover and at the other end to said frame, and a lever pivoted to said frame, one end of said last-named lever pivotally connected to said cover, and a pin fast to the other end of said last-named lever and projecting into said slot, said pin being substantially on a deadcenter with the pivot of said last-named lever when said cover is in a vertical or horizontal position.
4. Inatypevriter desk, a stationary frame, a type-writer table pivoted thereto, a movable cover, a lever provided with a slot pivoted to said frame, a link connecting said slotted lever to said table, a supporting-link pivoted at one end to the rear portion of said cover and at the other end to said frame, a lever pivoted to said frame, one end of said last-named lever pivotally connected to said cover, a pin fast to the other end of said lastnamed lever and projecting into said slot, said pin being substantially on a dead-center with the pivot of said last-named lever when said cover is in a vertical or horizontal position, and a stationary support upon which said cover is adapted to rest when in a vertical'position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WARREN F. FRASER.
