Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 5, 1905.
Application filed Apri12Z,1905. Serial No. 256,969.
T0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH WINOHEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Webb City, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Grocers Bins, of which the following is a specification.
VMy invention has relation to improvements more particularly in grocers bins, &c.
Objects of the invention are to provide for conveniently filling and emptying the bins, to suitably display the goods and to permit the removing of the same from the bins to advantage, and to secure the aforesaid objects in a simple, inexpensive, and effective manner.
Said invention consists of certain structural features, substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed and particularly specified.
ln the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure l is a perspective view thereof with the bin member or apartment proper tilted into its open position and the lid or cover of the lower scoop-bin compartment extended and serving as a counter. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the bin member or apartment detached from the supporting frame or entablature. Fig. 3 is a transverse section thereof mounted in operative position in said frame produced through an upper and a lower bin-compartment looking toward the end wall and showing the pivotal or rockable connection therebetween. Fig. Ltis a horizontal section of the same, taken through an upper bin-compartment viewing downward, disclosing more especially in plan the sectional bottom for delivering or removing the bin contents into the scoop-bin compartment below. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the supplemental pieces or partitions.
In the disclosure of my invention I provide a bin apartment, receptacle, or member 1 and an upright frame or entablature 2, within which the former is pivotally supported or mounted, as later explained. and which is adapted tobe suitably arrangedin practice in the store-room, as will be readily understood. Said apartment, receptacle, or member l is preferably of the construction shown, having a number of upright compartments or upper bins l arranged side by side, ofany desired number and capacity, and communicating at their lower ends with a corresponding number of lower or what may be termed scoop bins or compartments l". The upper ends or edges of thewalls of said upper bins or compartment are inclined or sloped rearward to permit the same to escape Contact with-the frame or entablature when tilted forward, and in the lower ends of these bins are correspondingly sloped bottoms. Each of said bottoms comprises a fixed member or section lim and a movable or sliding section or member lab, arranged to slide or move in under the fixed section, as in providing for delivering or removing the contents thereof into the bins below, suitable cleats or pieces la being secured in position at the required inclination or angle for the support of said movable bottom section for that purpose. Said sliding or movable section is provided or equipped with a thumb or finger piece or knob lad for its convenient manipulation or movement, as occasion may require.
The bins la are suitably fitted with glass or transparent fronts le, and in rear thereof are arranged at suitable intervals therefrom sup-` plemental pieces or partitions 1f to provide subchambers or compartments in said bins to be filled with a sample of the goods or article contained within the bin-chamber proper and whereby the extent of the contents of the latter may be simulated, giving the same the appearance of being always full. Said partitions lfare provided with lateral edgewise-arranged pieces or cleats 1g presented toward the fronts of the bin chambers or compartments and serving to spaceolf said partitions therefrom, and extending in a preferably downward and rearward inclination from said lateral cleats are opposite elongated slotted arms or lugs 1h, receiving the shanks of set or holding screws l1, working or screwing into the sides of said bin-chambers. By this arrangement it is obvious that said partitions are held or clamped effectively in position and that they may be removed and replaced as circumstances require.
The lower scoop bins or compartments 1b, having their common forward bottom extension lk inclined upward and outward, themselves extend or project forward a suitable distance relatively beyond the front surface of the upper bin-compartments, thus providing for ready access to and the scooping out of the contents of said lower bin-compartments, as is apparent. Said lower bin-compartments have their partitions and the forwardly-extending portions of the sides of the receptacle or apartment, forming the end walls of the end bin-compartments, inclined outward and downward to the oppositely-inclinedforward bottom extension lk to render IOO said lower bin-compartments quite shallow at this point, the purpose of which is obvious. Secured to the forward edge of said bottom extension is an upstanding or vertical strip or bar 11, and to this latter is suitably hinged or pivoted, as presently explained, the closure or cover 3 for the lower or scoop bin compartments 1b, the same havinga suitable handle 3 and fitting down upon the forward extension of the latter with its front and rear edges abutting the strip l1 and the front surface of the upper bin-compartment as shown, making an effective closure therefor. Said cover or closure has its hinging or pivoting action formed by applying thereto about centrally of its transverse area upon its inner surface preferably butt-hinges 4, one leaf of each of which is secured to the latter, and to the other leaves thereof are riveted preferably twisted metal straps 4a, with their inner ends pivoted or jointed to the outer ends of plates or bars 4b. These in turn are pivoted to the inner surfaces of the end lower compartments or bins 1b, whereby as said closure or cover is extended or removed from said bins it is caused to assume a practically horizontal position for forming a support or counter upon which to temporarily rest sacks or bags containing the goods or articles it may be desired to pour into the upper bin-compartments, as in Vfilling or replenishingthe same.
At the upper end of the receptacle or member l and upon the inner surfaces of the upper end compartments or bins thereof are applied pieces or stops 5, being removably held in place by nut-equipped screws *5L passed therethrough and said receptacle at the lower rear edge thereof. These stops being effective to engage the supporting-frame 2 at the inner side of its forward top portion serve to limit the forward tilting movement of the receptacle or member for exposing the upper ends of the upper bin-compartments, as in permitting ready access thereto for filling or replenishing its contents. l
At the upper forward end of the receptacle or member 1 is suitable means, as a catch 6, of the character shown or -otherwise for the proper retention of said receptacle as against movement or tilting forward when this is not required.
The receptacle or member l has suitably afvfixed to its bottom or under side within the plane principally of its upper bins or compartments, as Well as its lower bins or cornpartments, notched or recessed castings 7, effective to engage or receive bearings or pivots 8, secured to the lower longitudinal or axial bar 2X of the frame 2 to permit said receptacle to have a forward tilting movement and of course when thus moved to allow of its being returned to its former position.
Also it is noted that by means of the aforesaid arrangement of the bins or compartments of the receptacle 1 thecontents thereof, which are removed from below and which were supplied to said bins by the inverting of the sacks originally containing the same over said bins, may thus be dealt out from said bins to the best advantage, as is apparent. It is further called to attention that the frame member or entablature especially having its constituent parts put together by screws `or like fastenings the same may be readily taken apart or knocked down,'as may be of convenience for shipping, Sac.
l claiml. Acontrivance of the character described, comprising a bin member or receptacle, having a front sample-compartment embracing a partition having lateral edge rightangled portions equipped with downward and rearward inclined arms having longitudinal slots provided with downward facing entranceopenings, and set or holding screws working in said slots and the sides of said bin-member receptacle.
2. A contrivance of the character described, comprising a tilting receptacle provided with upper and lower compartments, the bottoms of the upper compartments having adjustable or movable sections to establish communication between the lower compartments and the.
upper compartments, said lower compartments having forward extensions provided with bottoms inclined outward and upward, and with a cover or lid effective to serve as a counter extension therefor.
3. A contrivance of the character described, comprising a compartment-receptacle provided with upper and lower compartments or bins, the Lipper compartments or bins having their bottoms provided with movable or sliding sections to establish communication between the upper and lower compartments or bins, the lower compartments having forward-extending portions, equipped with a cover or closure effective in its extended position for use as a temporary support or counter.
4. A contrivance of the character described, comprising a compartment-receptacle having its lower compartments or bins extended forward, and a cover or closure for the forward extension of said bins or compartments, said cover or closure being equipped with butthinges the inner leaves of which have fixed thereto plates pivoted to additional plates or members in turn pivoted to said receptacle.
In testimony whereof I aflx my signature in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
