Description

@with tetes etnt @frn JOHN e0oD1N, 0F GENTRALIA, ILLINoIs.
Letters Patent No. 80,475, dated July 28, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN BORING AND DRILLING-MAGHINES.
l TO ALL WHOM IT MAYCONGERN:
Be it known that I, JQHN GOODIN, of Centralia, in thecounty of Marion, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements ill-Combined Boring and Drilling-Machine and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, refercncebeing had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
-The nature of my invention consists in the use of a frame, provided with a l'ong gear-wheel and a rack-bar, for giving the machine rotary as well as perpendicular motion, and which machine can he used for drilling as well asfor boring. o
` In order to enable others' skilled inthe art` to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describeits construction and operation, referring to theannexed drawings, which form a. part of this specification, and in whichvFigure 1 is a side view, and
Figure 2' is a front view.
A represents a platform or base, 'with an upright post or standard, B, on-top of which the arm C is fastened and extends out beyondthe post. The inner side of the post B is provided with a groove, a, infwhch the arm D runs. This arm is fastened to the upright rack-bar E, ouitop of which another arm, F, is secured, in such a manner as to form aframe, extending from the post B, in the same-direction as the arm Con top of the said post.
The drill-shaft G runs through 'the arms C, F, and .D, and is provided with a corrugated cylinder or roller, H, placed on the shaft, and extending the whole distance between the arms D and F, forming, as it were, a long gear-wheel for the drill-shaft. The lower end of said shaft, below the arm D, is provided with a socket, I, for the insertion of the auger or drill. y I Y The shaft G is turned by means of a'driving-wheel, K, provided with cogs on its inner periphery, and working into the corrngations on `the cylinder or roller H, said wheel being placed in a frame, L, fastened to the side of the post B, obliquely, in sucha manner that the cogs ofthe wheel work only at the lower edge thereoi` in the corrugations of Athe cylinder, when the wheel is turned by the crank M. l
On the side of the post B are'two cars, b b, which support the shaft c, which shaft is turned by the crank N, and is provided with agog-wheel, O,.which works in the rack-bar E, so that .the drill-shaftl G may by this means be raised or lowered, as may be desired.
Thus, after'the boring is completed, the crank N and wheel O will raise the auger out of the wood, and the ;Same arrangement is used as a lever-power in drillingby a reverse motionr 1 i The machine is to be made of any suitable material, and ofany size required, according to the kind of work designed to be performed. Y i
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;
The arrangement of -thc corrugated cylinder H, inclinedl toothed wheel K, rack-bar E, Acofwheel O, and movable frame F, with the standard B, all constructed to yoperate as set forth.
-In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 16th day of May, 1868.
' JOHN GOODIN.
