TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, JosIAII M. SMITH, of the town of Warren, in the county of Somerset, and State of New Jersey, have. invented a certain new and useful Tenoning-Chisel; and I do hereby declare that the following isa clear, full, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and marks thereon, which said drawingforms part of this specification, and, byA` Figure 1 thereof, represents a front view of my chisel, and by Figure 2, a sidc'vicw of the same. l

This chisel is a double one, both ofthe parts, a and b, having two lips, c and a, so that it will cut both sides of the tenon, cutting the sides and shoulders, and can be operated with a mortising-machine, the same as a mortise-chisel. I l

This chisel maybe made for plain work or for moulded work, and can he used to cut coping, or for halving or dove-tailing, the size and length of the one or the other lip being such as will adapt the chisel tothe special kind of work. Both lips, as are shown by the drawings, are tapering from base to'poiut, and inclined upward from outward edge to the shoulder or angle, so that the cutting will commence on the outer surfaceor edge of the wood, and as the chisel will have aY drawing-entf the wood willnot be as liable to split or fracture as if the ends of the lips were straight. l v 4 y It will be noticed that the shank ofthis chisel is round, andwhen fitted into round socket, and in which it can readily be secured by a bidding-screw or other suitable means, may easily be turned, so as to have the cuttingfaces reversed or changed in relatiom to the board or strip being cut, the chisel cutting on the side Yer v on the end of the strip or board.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- A tenoning-chisel, constructed to operate in the manner as hereinset forth. This specification signed this 29th day oi' November, 1867.Y
