` KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PnESENTS:
That I, MILTON W. CLARK, of the city Aand county of Worcester, and Commonwealth 'of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slat-Tenoning Machines; 'and I do hereby declare that' the following is a full, cleaiyand exact'description 'of the same, reference'beinghad to .the accompanying'drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which'- Figure represen-ts a top 'or plan view'.`

My invention, which consists in the combination and arrangement Aof Vparts hereinafter,speciicallystated and claimed, relates to-.machinery for forming tenonsupon the ends of `blind-slats, and its object, is to produceanorganized machine by which 'the tenons can be cut upon the ends of the slet while the latter remains-at rest. To enable those skilled in the art towhichmy invention -belongsto make and luse the same, will proceed to describe it more in detail. l v l i l In the drawings, lthe part lettered'A is the bed, which is 4supported by the end-pieces B B. A drum, C, is supported in suitable bearings on the cross-braces a a ofthe end-pieces B A From a pulley, C', connected with the journal of drum C, a hand or belt'passes around a'pulley, B', on one `end of the shaft-D, which is .supported in bearings on the tops of the end-pieces B B. Upon shaft D are two spur-gears', E E. The hubof the latter is turned to receivethe collar-piece b, which, in turn, is fastened to the lower side of thedisk-sup'p'ort F, which rests uponrand -is fastened to the sliding-pieces c c, which are fitted to slide on the waysil 1 of thebed A. To the rea-r ends ofthe'slide-pieces ce are fastened the legs 2 2, which support the bearing or boxv 3 ofthe shaft G; Upon the outer end of shaft G is fastened a pulley, d, around which passes a belt or band, e, frqm the drum C. The inner end of shaft G turns loose in the disk G', the periphery dof-which rests and turnsgin' a groove, 5, cut in the outer face of the disk-supporting piece F, as-fully indicated in fig. 2.

Theslide-pieces c c, together with the stands .2 2 and disk-supporting piece F,'whichare` fastened to said pieces, can be moved back and forthou the ways 1 1 by loosening the bolt 9 by which one of the Vslidepieces is fastened to the bed.
Gear E- is nxade with a spline to fit a groove in the s haftD, whereby said gear can be"V moved back and forth onits sha-ft when slides c c are moved to adjust the cutter-head I, as may be desired. Upon the opposite s end of the bed, similar and a like number of ,parteci-e supported, except vthat-the pieces c c, on that end, are fastened to the bed, and' therefore gear E, of shaft D, isl not connected to the disk-supporting piece F n that .end of themachne. From the insideV of the pulley B project two pins, m m, whileuponshaft-D, between said pulley and the en d' of the frame, is arranged a clutchfpullcy, K, having a recess, n, cut in 'its outer side, into which lits a spiral spring, o, which 'passes againstthe side of pulley B for the purpose ofkecping its teeth or dogs, which project from its outer side, from clutching in with the teeth or dogs m m on the side vof pulley B', only when pulley K is forced outwards by the slide-piece L, which is fitted to slide upon the top of the main frame ot" the machine, being held in place by screw 10 und guides p, y, and e, fastened to the top of the main fra-me,
Slide-piece L is operated by lever M, whichis pivoted at 11 to the top of the main frame, and at'12 to the slide-piece L. In figs. 1 and 2, slide-piece L isV shown moved out'suliici'ently to throw clutch-pulley K-into mesh with pulley B.
v Pulley Kj is combined with the shaft D in such a manner, by spline and slot,` that when the pulley is turned it will turn shaft D, while .at the same time pulley K can be moved back and forth on shaft D, as before explained.
.The inner end of the slide L is notched or cut out, as shown at13, for the following purposes: When slidelpiece L is moved out,`as shown in fig. 1, a spring, 14, (see igs. 1 and 4,) fastened t o theinside of the bed, springsv back of the end 15 of the slide-piece L, and holds pulley K in mesh with the pulley B', until pin 16, .in the side of gear J, on that end of the machine, comes around to` the hooleend 17 (see dotted lines, fig. 4,) of spring 14, when the latter is sprung forward suciently'rto Yclear the end 15 of slide L, when spring O forces pulley K out of mesh with pulley D', the slide-piece being forced in until the shoulder 13 strikes against spring 14,
and shaft' D stops.
Upon the inner end of the black slide-pieces c vc are fastened the standards N N, to the tops of which are hinged the Slat-supports O O, to the tops of which are fastened the slet-holding springs P P, the front ends 18 18 of which are curved up, as indicated in red lines, lig. 3.
Upon the insides of 'the slain-supports are fastened adjustable Slat-guides or stops 19 19. The front ends of the slat-supports O O'rcst upon the tops of thc'stands Q Q, fasteued'to the inner ends of the front slidepieces c c, the front ends being provided with adjusting-screws 20 20, for the purpose of adjusting the slatsupports up or down,'to bring the blank slat It at the proper height' to be acted upon by the cutters attached to the heads Il.'
' It will be seen that'thedisks GG serve as the inner bearings of the shafts G G, while at the same time they'serve to support the bearings of the shafts H II.
Any desired form of cutter-heads I I may be employed, and the cutters may be attached thereto in any proper manner, although I prefer to use the cutter-head for which Letters Patent were granted to me on the 31st of March, 1868.
The operation is as follows: Motion being given to the drum C in any proper manner, a rapid motion will he imparted, through belts e e, to the shafts G G, and through them, by means of pulleys H H and belts I I',
' to thcishafts I-I-H and their heads I I. rPhe operator now takes a blank slat, and pushes its ends under the holders P P until they strike against the stops 19 19, then moves lever M to throw slide L against pulley K, and forces -it in mesh with pulley B', when a rotary motion will be 'impartcdto shaft D, and through that to the gears J J and disk Gf G. v
As the disks revolve' they carry around the shafts H H and the cutter-heads I I, whereby a true tenon will be cut upon each end of' the blankslat R.
-By setting the cutter-heads nearer to or further from the centre of shafts GG, which can be donel as before explained, smaller'or 'larger tenons can becut upon the ends of the slat.'
It will be observed that Athe motion of shaft D, and consequently the motion of the gears .I J and disks G G', is stopped by the unclutching of pulleyK, and that suchunclutching takes place when the cutter-heads I I are down, or just the revcrsefrom-the positions shown in the drawings.
' When the'cutter-heads'are down, the finished sla't can be quickly removed, and a new blank inserted without stopping thc lmotion of thecutter-heads. v
As soon as the blank is inserted, the operator, by his hand, or by a proper needle-arrangement to be operated by his foot, throws pulley K into-clutch, when the cutter-heads I I are revolved entirely around the ends of the slat, and then stopped lintil the operation of removing the finished slat and inserting a new blank is completed, when the shaft D is started `and the tenons'cut on another slat, 'and so on.

The cutter-heads I Iare shown in thc drawings as having been run half way around after the tenons have been cut. They are shown in this position to illustrate the parts more fully.
Having described my improved machine for cutting ten'cns on theeends of slats for blinds and otherpurposes, what I claim therein as new and of my invention, and. desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
v 1. The combination, with the cutter-head, disks, and mechanism for imparting to them` a `rotary motion, of the cutter-l-leadsl and their shafts, mounted eccentrically in said disks, together with mechanism for revolving the cutter-heads inA themanner described, so that the said cutter-heads shall not only have a rotary movement lupon their own axes, but shall also revolve around the axes of their supportingdisks, substantially as sind for the purposes setv forth. l
'2.' The combination, with the disks G and shafts G, imparting'- motion to the eccentric-cutter heads, and running loosely in said' disks, of the bearing-supportsf? and annulardlsk`supports F, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. l
, 3. The combination, with the 'disks G and cutter-head shafts, of the adjustable qui1l-bearings for supporting said shafts, substantially as and for the purposes'set forth. a
4. The combination, with one of the annular disk-supports, F, and gear E', of `clasp or guide-pisse b, mounted loosely upon lthe hub of saicl gear, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
5. The (combination, with one of the gears, J, and the shipper or slide, of a hooked spring, onstructed andoperating in connection vwith the said gear andshipper, in the manner set forth.
