Description

EDWIN NEEN ALD, -OLFIURNER-,l MAINE."

TO ALLWHOM IT" MAY CONCERN': Y
Be it known that I, EDWIN-FERNALD, of Turner, inthe countyof'Andxfoscoggin, andSltate ofjMaine, have invented a new and improved'Device for Holding Tools 'againstGrindstones, Vand 'dohereby'dee'lare that-thief following is a full, clear, and exact description rthereof,.whiehwill enable thosetskilled in ftheqart'tomake and use the same, .reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forxilingA partei' this s pecioation, in which-'-V Figure 1 represents a. vertical 'longitudinal-section of Inyimprovedmachine,"theffplane offsecton being" indicated-by the linexz, flg.v2.` "I f f n l VFi'gure' 2 is a plan or top view ofV the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. l y Thisinvention relates to a devicev by which-'toolsihavng along cutting-edgepuin :beheld against grindi stones, and can be sharpened, the device being so arranged that the bevel 'formedohd the tool .will be enti-rely uniform, and that its edge will be ground perfectly straight.: l l g The invention consists Ain the use of. a shoe -or clamp, whichsldesoua horizontal rod and which ismoved thereon by means of chains passing over pulleys in the ,end of a stationary. frame;v
In the frontend of this shoe thetool to be groundispsecured,4 and by Inoving the shoe on the said horizone` tal rodI the tool will bc drawn across the edge of the grindstone. :The front part of the shoe res`ts -upon an I* 'adjustablesupporg the length of which is 'regulated by a screw,so.that b y turningV the said screw the ltool can be brought as close as necessary against the ngrindston'e. g V- y 4 y A represents a bench, which is standing upon legs, Rand n which-the bearings for thefshaft of the grindstoneV C: are arranged. i l y D isa vertical frame, yczensi'stingot' the uprightsra a,,at the sides' ofA the bottoni lplate 6,-?'an'dof the ,upper brace or plate c) VThis frame is set upon the bench A,`and is secured to the same byarsor'e'wV or screwsand nutsgd, passing through the bottongb, of' theV frame D, and through a plate, e, which -isffarrahg ed on th'der side of the bench, as is clearly shownrin fig. .1. Y' I Y l :By loosening the nut onthe bolts d the frame D can be VIl ngved nearer to or further' from the airis of the' grndst-one, and be fastened in any desired position. v i It-will be seen that the frame Dpor rath-er its Vtop and ,botto plates, are arranged parallel with the axis of-the g'rindstone C.` j V E is ahorizontal metal rod, arranged lbetweenthe side pieces of the frame' Dl 1 l F is a clainp 'or shoe, which has two `legs on its under side,'near its rear-lend, =bywhich it is 'ttedupon and around the rod E, so as. to slide and turn thereon. V'.lwo chains,f fywhichiareseoured, to adrurr, y, onvthe upper plate c of the framel), and to the shoe F,`and which pass over pulleysz, which are lxedt the'sides of the frameD, serve to lnove the shoe on the rod E, whenever the drum g is turned by' means of a. crank, z', as shown. i g
v l G'is a horizontal lrail, arranged on or near the frontf part of the-bed-platez. H is ajointed rod which lits through a mortise in the shoe, 'and which is provided with-,a wheehj, on its'lower end, which wheel tsiuto ork upon the rail G, asshown. I is a vertical-screw which lits through a nut, R, whicli is' elevated by braces, Z, above the .surface of the shoe. The'lower end of this screw fits upon-the upper end of the jointed rod H. By` g Vturning the screw, so that the distance between the rail and nut is diminished or increased, the front edgef the shoe, and with'tit the tool held thereinwill be lowered or raised, as may 'be desired` l The tool is held in a recess, or between jaws Vin the front part of the shoe, and is clumpedrbym'eans ofsetscrews mm, as is clearly shown in-the drawing. n
When the tool is clamped, the screw T is adjusted to regulate h'ow much of the tool should be ground off; then the crank z' is turned, and the edge of the tool is drawn across that of the grindstone.
I am awarethat tools are already held in levers, which aref-moved so as to draw the edge of thetooloven the stone,'butltbc se levers ,can never be moved'fas steady as the shoe F is moved by the chains ff.A
Furthermore, these leves could not be steadied in fiont, and consequently the straight edge of the tool could only be obtained by the ability and skill of the operator, while, by the use of my machine, a. perfectlystiaight and smoothly-bevelled edge must reslt as long as the wbole length of the tool is drawn across the face-of the stone.
C'Zaz'm.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Ptentf- I The vertically-adjustable jointed bar H, bearing the Wheel j, in combination with the guide G and horizontally-travelling slioe F, as herein described for the purpose specified.' I EDWIN FERNALD.
