vTo ALL'WHQM IT MAIZ ooNcE'RN: i i y I I Be itkncwthatl, ROBERT B ERRYMaN, ofhiladelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, and State. ofPenn- Sylvania, have invented'anew and improved Combined High and Low-Pressure and High end ,Low-,Waten Indicator; and I .do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description "thereof, which wiilienable others skilled in the artto make'and use the .sarne, reference being had to the accompanying drawment'ofq devices, as will be hereinafter more fully described'. I
ing, forming u. partof this specification. y
The drawing represents a sectional elevation of my improved indicator. f I g his invention relates to improvements in'alarm-i'ndicators for steam-boilers, an'd 4ionsists in .the arrange- Tivo ifalves'are. arranged in the upper part of the cylinder, one of which is raised byexcessvc pressure of"v Q stcam', and acts as anordinary safety-valve, while the other-'is lowered by a weight when either the pressure of Vsteam or the quantity of water is reduced or falls below a given point. In either of 4these cases, when either v0f the valves is'opened, a whistle'will be blown, and thenproper' alarm given.
fA, in the drawi-ngg--1epresents a cylindrical vessel, to be attached on any con-lenient point in front of s. steam-boiler, ordinary orf-suitable construction. It is,by means oftwo pipes,t b, connected with theboil'er, thelower pipe, a, serving to keep the water in the vessel 'Aat .the same height at which itfst'ands inthe boiler, while the other upper pipe, 6, conducts steam to the vessel A.V i 1| lUpon theperforeted cover c of the vessel A is secured an alarm-fwhistle, B, from4 which thestearn is excluded a valve, @that is fastened to a vertical spindle, C, which extends nearly tothe bottoinof theV vessel A, asE
.` shown'. :Thesp'indle is drawnup by means of a lWeight, D, which is adjustably Vsecured on a lever, E, .which is is drawn against its seat. 5
i To the lower 4endl of the spindle C is attached a weight, F, of s'oapstoue, hollowmetal, or of other suitableg secured to a fulcrum, e, 4attached to the whistle-bellsleeve, as shown.. By means of this weight D, thevalve df material, so as tobe light. It is adjustable on the spindle, between'two nuts, ff, as shown.
' The lower-end of the spindle passes through a guide,I g, fastened to the bottom or sides of the vessel A. :When water, is 'iet-into the'vcsscl A, the weight F will become lighter, and when the steam enters the upper i part of 'thevessel A, its pressure ivi1l,rwhen all parts have been properly adjusted, suffice to hold the valve d against the seat. The weight-F tends to draw the valve d down, but the combined action of 4the weight D and of the stean'iheeps it closed, provided the steam has the Vrequired pressure and `the water its required height.
Wvalve Z to its seat, the valve will drop, and give the alarm; and when there is too'greatapressure of steam;V
,E When the weight F is submerged, itis to a certain extent (or to about oncthird of its weight) buoyed vup `and{suipo-rted by the water. I When the Water falls below the' required height, so that such support is Withdravin, the weight ivill open the valve, and the alarm will vbe given. i I f y 'lhe required pressure of steam is determined by the position of the weight on the levers E and H, (the weight F being submerged in the water-5) and when the pressure in the chamber is insuiicient to hold the fthe s at'efylvalve G will rise, and `give the alarm. I
LSnpposinvg thc safety-valve to be adjusted to carry, say,t`ty pounds of sotealn, the valve d will be sc nearly balanced in its scat by the weight Doon the lever E, andthe submerged weight F, that a slight 'diminution ih cither'the pressure of steam, or in the quantity ol' Water, will open it, and the Whistle will be blown.
: gffilhus ,by, the aforesaid arrangement, alariz will be given when the water -is too high or too low, or when i the'fpressnre of the steam is teo lon'.
G represents a lsafety-vulve, of Ordinar;I construction, held down. upon its seat by means ot a weighted lever, H, as show nt 'The valve-spindle z fits -in a whistle I, whichis secured upon the eoverof the'vcsscl A. i Excessiveprssnre: ot' steam will open'. the valve G, and will blow the Whistle I, thus giving the alarm.
By means ot lthis inventiolrifall accidents canY be avoided, and mistakes of negligence and oversightlnannot become dangerous. A
Byhaving Athe safety-valve G connected with a whistle, the alarmis not only given, bui, the uselesskve'ss'te ofsteamisprevented.` .l i .I l v.
I am aware tha-t the devices herein shown have been'eml lvoyedin alarm-indicators vfor ysteaimllloilers, they are' therefore not of my invention,v and Ido not claim them; but; having thus described myinventien,
- What I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--i v Y The arrangeniene of. the vessel A, spindle C, guide jgmlve d, adjustpgble oat F, whistle 13, lever E, weight' D, safety-valve Gg'riw-eightelleve; ]EIV, and Whi's'ovle'lf,l as herein glesribe'd, furthe -p'urpose specified.
' i The above speeicetion of mynvention signed by me, this 7th day of March, 1868:;
I l I u i i I y ROBERT BERRYMAN.
