BANK OR OTHER BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 31, 1905.
Applicatio filed January 25,1904. Serial No. 190,470.
To all whom ityrmy concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE R. H11.L, a citizen of the United States, residing in Bartold, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bank or other Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming part 'of this specification. I
My invention relates to a box composed of a plurality of interlocking sections that are mortised and so disposed with relation to each other that the edges of the sections will fit into the mortises of the adjacent sections in a manner to prevent dismemberment of the box structure.
The invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Figure I is a perspective view of my box. Fig. II is a cross-section taken on line II II, Fig. I. Fig. III is a crosssection taken on line III III, Fig. I. Fig. IVis a cross-section taken on line IV IV, Fig. I, with the section of the box that is finally put in place in the assembling of the box, shown in elevated position as it appears just previous to the locking 7 of the box-sections or the unlocking thereof.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 designate the sections of my box, which are each provided with flat straight face side edges. Each section is furnished with mortises A, that receive the flat side edges of the adjacent sections that fit thereinto to furnish interlocking joints. The sections are arranged in pairs lying parallel with each other and spaced apart by the interposed adjacent sections, the sections 1 and 6 occupying parallel lines, the sections 2 and 3 occupying parallel lines at right angles to the sections 1 and 6 and extending transversely thereof, being positioned on edge between the first-named sections. The sections Land 5 are positioned on edge between the sections 2 and 3 and extend transversely thereof and also transversely of the sections 1 and 6. One of the sectionsas, for instance, that 5is provided with a chamfer 5, (see Figs. I and IV,) that inclines inwardly at the inner face of the section to one of the mortises in said section from a point intermediate of the mortise and the nearest end of said section.
In assembling the box the various sections are laid together in the positions described, so that the edges of the various sections will fit into the mortises in the adjoining sections when arranged in pairs, as mentioned, the mortise-section 5, beside which the chamfer 5 is located, and the facing-mortise in the section 4: remaining unoccupied by a section after the other sections have been assembled and the section 6 being put in place lastly. One of the side edges of the section 6 is first entered into the unoccupied mortise in the section 4, and the opposite side of said section 6 is forced downwardly, so that its edge will travel down the chamfer 5 and enter the mortise in the section. 5 adjacent to said chamfer. This action of entering the section 6 is permitted, due to slight resilience of the sections into which the last section of the box is inserted, and immediately upon the last section becoming seated in the mortises that receive it the receiving-sections spring inwardly toward each other into interlocking position.
To render the box serviceable as a bank, a
.slot 7 may be made in one of the sections as, for instance, that 6through which coins may be introduced into the box.
I claim as my invention As a new article of manufacture, a box consisting of a plurality of sections, each section comprising a central portion having aflat inner face, flat end portions, the inner faces of which are in plane with the face of the central portion, and a mortise between the central portion and the end portions, the central portion of the sections having straight side edges to enter the mortises in the facing adjoining section and the end portions having curved side edges; one of the sections being provided at its face with a chamfer extending over the entire width of the section-face from a point in the mortise belowthe plane of the sectionface to the face of the end' portion.
GEORGE R. HILL.
In presence of- E. S. KNIGHT, BLANOHE HOGAN.
