Description

No. 802,874. PATENTBD OCT. 24, 1905; M. G. NICHOLSON.
RAILWAY GAR DOOR.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 29,1905.
MMiogM/Ww VAX/5W Wilrzeases. [mentor UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1905.
Application filed June 29, 1905. Serial No. 267,677.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MALCOLM GooDINe NIGH- OLSON, elevator weighing-clerk, of the town of Goderich, in the county of Huron and Province of Ontario, Oanad a, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway- Car Doors; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to improvements in the doors of railway-cars used for shipping grain or other similar commodities in bulk; and the objects of my improvements are, first, to reduce the time occupied in loading and unloading cars; second, to effect a saving of expense in the cost of the same, and, third, to prevent the possibility of loss of bulk commodities, such as wheat, in course of shipment. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an external elevation of a car door and frame. Fig. 2 is an internal elevation of door. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the door and part of a car on line 1 2, Figs. 2 and 4:. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan through lower part of door. Fig. 5 is a section through door-frame and door, showing fastening device. Fig. 6 is a vertical section of same.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The door, made of wood, metal, or other suitable material, is in two parts, the lower, I) t, hinged or otherwise attached at a a to the upper part 5. which is hung by hinges on mor other suitable device and in such a way that b b folds over 6 and the whole can be swung on the hinge m m up to ceiling of car and there held up by hooks, staple, or any other sufficient fastening. Thejoints between parts of doors are rabbeted, and the lower edge of t b is also rabbeted out to fit over iron plate or threshold of door. In the upper doorb is the loading-door D, rabbeted all round and hinged on top, so as to open inward, fastened by button or catch at a, and is secured open by means of books, staples, or other ordinary device. In the lower door 7) Z) are the discharging-doors 0 cc, rabbeted all round, hinged on sides, as at 0 0, and opening outwardly. One door 06 has attached to it a vertical plate 71/, overlapping the joints of both doors 6 and co in the mullionf. Attached to plate it are spindles G G, having a hollow nut threaded internally to receive the threaded pin I and on outside of plate washer and drop-handle 70. By turning out 9 round, by means of the handle 71:, on the fixed pin I the doors are closed tightly into their rabbets. The lower part of door 6 b is held in similar manner by means of the fixed bolts inserted into frame, and the nuts g and handles in 7 on inside of door.
. What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a car having a dooropening, of a door hinged at the top of the opening and comprising an upper section and a lower section hinged thereto, said lower section having a rabbet-joint with said upper section and also with the sill of the doorway the door adapted to fit closely to the inner side of the door-frame and each section having a door rabbeted all around therein, and a means for clamping the door tightly in place comprising a fixed bolt in the frame and a revoluble nut provided with a handle mounted on the door, all substantially as set forth.
Goderich, Ontario. June 26, 1905.
