Be it known that I, WnNznL J. PFANNER- STILL, residing in Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Punches, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in punches.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an improved construction adapted for securing the punch-tool in the coupling, said construction being such that not only is a great saving in material effected, but also a saving in the time consumed in the manufacture of the devices and in the cost of said devices.
` With the above primary object and other incidental objects in view the invention consists of the devices and parts or their equivalents, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying' drawings, Figure lis a horizontal section on the line y y of Eig. 4. Fig. 2 is a detail view of one of the punchholding jaws. Eig. 3 is a detail view of the punch-tool. Referring to the drawings, the numeral 7 indicates a coupling' having the upper portion of its bore of uniform diameter and threaded interiorly and having the lower portion of its bore tapered downwardly. Adapted to fit in the lower tapered portion of the coupling are twosimilar semicylindrical punch-holding jaws 8 8. The exterior surface of each of these jaws is tapered downwardly to conform to and have a wedging engagement with the lower end of the bore of the coupling, the said lower end of the bore of the coupling acting as a seat for the jaw-sections. Vhen the jaw-sections are adjusted together and [itted in the coupling as shown, they form a complete cylinder with a bore of uniform diameter. The inner curved wall of each jawsection is provided with a rounded bead or rib 9, the two beads when the jaws are adjusted together forming a complete annular bead or rib.
The punching-tool is indicated by the numeral 10, and this tool is provided at its lower end with the usual pointed projection 11, adapted to iit into the centering-mark punched in the material to be operated upon. The punching-tool is of uniform diameter from its upper end to its lower end and at a desired distance below the upper end is provided with an annular groove or recess l2, which is adapted to be engaged by the beads or ribs 9, formed on the inner sides of the jaw-sections, as hereinafter more fully described.
The shank of the punch-holder is indicated by the numeral 13, and the lower end of this shank is threaded exteriorly, so as to be adapted to engage the threaded upper end of the bore of the coupling, as shown in Eig. 4, this threaded lower end of the shank being preferably reduced in diameter, so as to effect the engagement referred to.
In assembling the parts together the two jaws are arranged around the upper end of the punch, so that the beads 9 of said jaws will engage the annular groove 12 of the punchtool. The punching-tool with the jaws so engaging is passed through the upper end of the coupling, so as to permit the tapered sides of the jaws to engage and seat themselves on the tapered surface at the lower end of the bore of the coupling. The shank and coupling are now made to engage each other. This en gagement should be suiiicient to bringl the lower end of the shank into contact with the upper end of the punching-tool, said upper end of the tool advisably projecting a slight distance above the plane of the upper ends of the jaws.
While I have herein referred tov the meinber l0 speciiically as a punching-tool, yet I do not wish to be understood as restricting myself to a punching-tool, and would therefore wish to be understood that wherever the terms punchingtool or punch are employed any form of similar tool which maybe used for setting down rivet-heads, bending or forming small articles of metal or the like, are to be comprehended or included by these terms.
In a great variety of punches the upper end of the punching-tool is provided with an integral enlargement or head which is adapted to seat itself in the lower portion of the bore of the coupling. In constructions of this character a greatdeal of time is necessarily consumed in turning the tool so as to provide the enlargement at the upper end thereof, and in addition a considerable quantity of steel is IOO wasted, owing to the fact that the punchingtool from the enlarged head downwardly is necessarily required to be reduced in diameter. In my improved construction the punch can be made of the same diameter throughoutyand consequently there is not only a great saving in steel, approximately about sixty-six per cent. but, furthermore, at least four punching-tools can be made in the same length of time that is required in order to make one tool of the construction above referred to. My improved device also provides a convenient means for assembling and disassembling the several parts, and when assembled they are firmly and securely held together.
VVhilein the accompanying drawings I have only shown two of the jaws 8 provided with the beads 9, yet I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to this exact number, inasmuch as it is obvious that any convenient number greater than two may be employed and the same results obtained.
Vhat I claim as my invention is# 1. In a punch, or the like, the combination of a coupling having the lower end of its bore tapered, a plurality of jaws having their outer surfaces tapered and fitted to the tapered lower end of the bore of the coupling, the said jaws provided on their inner surfaces with beads or ribs, a tool around which the jaws are fitted, said tool provided therearound with a groove or recess adapted. to receive the beads or ribs of the jaw, and a shank fitted into the upper end of the coupling.
2. In a punch, or the like, the combination of a coupling having theupper end of its`bore screw-threaded, and the lower end of said bore tapered, a plurality of jaws having their outer surfaces tapered and fitted to the tapered lower end of the bore of the coupling, the said jaws provided on their inner surfaces with beads or ribs, a tool around which the jaws are fitted, said tool provided therearound with a groove or recess adapted to receive the beads or ribs of the jaws, and a shank provided with screwthreads around its lower portion, said threads adapted to engage the threaded upper end of the bore of the coupling. n
3. In a punch, or the like, the combination of a coupling having the lower end of its bore tapered,a plurality of jaws, each jaw of partlycircular form in cross-section and tapering lengthwise to iit the tapered lower end of the bore of the coupling, and when adjusted together forming a complete cylinder, and each jaw provided on its inner surface with a bead or rib, the several ribs, when the jaws are adjusted together, forming a complete annular rib, a tool around which the jaws are fitted, said tool provided therearound with a groove or recess adapted to receive the beads or ribs of the jaws, and a shank fitted into the upper end of the coupling.
