1'0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT W. LYLE, a citizen of the.United States, and a resident of New York, in the county and State of New .York, have invented certain new and useful for electric wires, and more especially to such as comprise a plurality of sections; and the Ob ect of my invention is to provide sections such as are used in the construction of said conduits and which will be of such a form that they can be easily and cheaply manufactured,
while embodying within said form means which are engageable by suitable members ferred to were provided. In these, said means were similar to those pertaining to my inven tion to the extent that they comprised grooves which were in some instances undercut, said grooves being in some instances formed in the external faces of the conduit-sections and longitudinally of the latter. In some instances the grooves extended from end to end of the sections, while in other instances the grooves extended a certain distance from each end and toward the center of each section, but were interrupted centrally of the sections. In the last-named form the end wall of each groove served as a stop to prevent excessive longitudinal movement of a dowel placed in the groove For the purpose hereinbe'lt'ore related. It is desirable that a stop which is attached to a conduit-section should be provided for the purpose related, as thereby is obviated the necessity for providing a stop separate from the conduitsection which involves additional labor in its use. In the absence of such attached stops dowels were generally used of such length that their ends abutted one against another in the grooves in which they were located, one dowel thus acting as a stop for another. In practice it is found that conduitsections which are made of the materials which are commonly used for the purpose may be more easily and cheaply made with the before-mentioned grooves extending from end to end of said sections than with the shorter or interrupted grooves, and the form of con- .duit-section which embodies my invention is such that this desired end may be attained in combination with the provision of dowel-stops which are firmly attached to and are practically a part of each conduit-section.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a conduit-section which embodies my invention, a dowel being shown in broken lines in position in said section. Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof, a dowel also being shown in a groove. Fig. 3 is a partial central vertical longitudinal section thereof, two forms of stops and a dowel being shown therein; and Fig. 4c is a vertical transverse section thereof through the line a a, Fig. 1. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail sectional views illustrating one method of forming the stop in the longitudinal grooves.
Corresponding parts in all the figures are denoted by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, A in a general way designates a conduit-section in which are formed grooves (L a, which extend from end to end of the section A and are preferably undercut, as shown, and adapted to re ceive dowels, such as the member 6, which is shown in broken lines in Fig. 1 and in full lines in Figs. 2 and 3. Dowel-stops c 0 may be fixed in the grooves a a, in which said dowel-stops are firmly attached to the conduit-section. The dowel-stops may be of any convenient or desired form and of suitable dimensions. I prefer, however, to form them either, as at 0, by impressing into the grooves a a in the green-molded conduit-section A a suitable device Which will carry into said grooves a portion of the material of the outer parts of the walls of said grooves and firmly press said portion of material into said grooves a a, so that it becomes and remains integral with the conduit-section A, or by forming them,
, as at c, by inserting into the grooves a a a portion of separate material which shall be either homogeneous with the material of the conduit-section A or of such a nature or form as to become and be firmly attached to said conduit-section, the attachment being efiected either by the cementation of the stop to the section or in any other suitable manner. For the stops 0 I prefer, however, to use cement which will adhere to and, fix itself firmly within the grooves a a. Preferably the grooves a a are formed in the exterior faces (Z (Z of the conduit-sections and on the median longitudinal lines thereof.
The uses and advantages of my invention will be readily understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art to which it appertains. As a conduit is beinglaid, by properly positioning sections A suitable dowels are placed in the grooves a a and serve to aline the sections one with another both longitudinally and transversely of the conduit, as the dowels so placed in a longitudinal plane across the joint between the conduit-sections serve to prevent movement of said sections either lengthwise or longitudinally or sidewise or transversely. Relatively short dowels should be used, and the stops 0 or 0' will prevent said dowels from moving longitudinally, the latter being thus retained in their normal positionsnamely, partly in one section and partly in an adjacent and contacting section. It will be noted that suitable dowels will be retained in the grooves 66 a by reason of the undercut form of said grooves. It will also be noted that each groove (4 is divided by the dowel-stops into three longitudinal parts-one inner part a and two outer parts a aand that the dowels lie in the outer parts a only. It is obvious, however, that the inner part a of a priorly-formed groove (0 may be completely filled, at least longitudinally, by the dowel-stops 0 or 0. This latter construction is not herein specifically shown and described, as it is concerned in the subject-matter of another application for patent concurrent herewith; but for the purposes of the present application the outer end faces of the dowel-stops are referred to by the term dowel-stops without reference to the extent or dimensions of said dowelstops in a longitudinal plane with respect to the conduit-section.
In the case of conduit-sections which have more than four ducts-for instance, six or eight ductsthe longitudinal grooves on the exterior faces would instead of being formed on a median line of each of the faces be formed on the median line of the respective webs or partitions which form the plurality of ducts and on said median lines on all faces of the conduit-section. In the case of a four-way cond uit-section, such as that herein illustrated,
the median line of the webs or partitions is the median line of the conduit itself; but in the case of a conduit-section having a plurality of ducts greater than four in number the median line of the webs or partitions would of pass from the middle portion of the longitudinal groove, past the stop, between the dowel-pin and walls of the groove, between the abutting ends of the conduit-sections, and into the ducts. When it is desired to obviate this possibility, I prefer to make the stops in the longitudinal groove as a complete wall or cross-partition which will entirely close the groove and prevent any possibility of the passage of moisture into the end section of the groove which is provided for the dowel-pin. Such a completely closed construction is shown in Fig. 5, the stop being in this instance formed by simply pinching up the material of the sides of the longitudinal groove to form a wall or partition, as at 0, extending entirely across the groove and completely closing the end of the dowel-pin portion from the middle open part of the longitudinal groove. I reserve the right to form this complete stop or closure in any other suitable or adapted manner for the purposes stated.
I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the details of construction and arrangement as herein described and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations and modifications may be made in the features of construction and arrangement in the adaptation of the device to various conditions of use without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and improvements. 1 therefore reserve the right to all such variation and modification as properly fall within the scope of my invention and the terms of the following claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A conduit-section for electric wires, and comprising longitudinally-grooved walls, and dowel-stops fixed in the grooves in said walls.

52. A conduit-section comprising a body portion formed With an undercut groove, and material of the body portion pressed into said groove for restricting the same.
