Be it known that LHENR HARRISON SWAN, a citizen of the United States,residing at Beardstown, in the county of Cass and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drainage-Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for draining lowlands and districts protected by means of levee, dike, breakwater, or other form of embankment.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a novel mechanism for forcing water through the levee or embankmentinto the river or other body of water and which is of such construction as to prevent backflow in the event of the water propelling means ceasing to work or through other causes which under ordinary conditions would tend to create a flow from the river or other body of water through the levee upon the district or land protected thereby.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acq uire' a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accom panying drawings.
While the invention may be adapted to different forms and conditions by changes in the structure and minor details without departing from the spirit or essential features thereof, still the preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section of a levee or embankment provided with a pumping apparatus embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same on the line a: :1: of Fig. 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in both the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The levee, dike, breakwateigor like embankment is represented by the reference-numeral l and may be of any construction commonly employed for protecting lowlands and like districts from the encroachment of rivers and like bodies of water. In accordance with this invention-the pipe or conduit 2 is laid in the base portion of the levee and extends therefrom, so as to communicate at one end with the river or body of water 3 and at the opposite end with the lowland or district to be drained. The pipe or conduit is provided at its discharge end with a valve 4, which normally closes with the pressure of the water 3, so as to prevent passage of the same through the pipe or conduit. The valve 4 is hinged or jointed at its upper end to the top side of the pipe 2 and closes against said pipe by a downward action.
In the preferable construction the pipe or conduit 2 is tapered and is smaller at its discharge end. A motor-wheel 5 is located at the receiving end of the pipe 2 and may be of any structural type commonly employed in rotary pumps and is designed when in motion to force the drainage-water through the pipe or conduit 2 into the stream or body of water 3. The motor-wheel 5 is fast upon a shaft 6, which is adapted to be positively driven from any suitable source of power in any convenient way, as by means of a drive-chain 7 and sprocket-wheel 8, the latter being fast on the shaft 6. A plate 9 is fitted to the side of the levee or embankment facing the water 3 and the delivery end of the pipe 2 is connected thereto in any suitable manner. For security the vertical edges of the plate are flanged, as shown at 10. the same forming abutments to prevent movement of the plate lengthwise of the levee.
A flared plate 11 is located upon the side of the levee or embankment facing the district to be drained and supports the receiving end portion of the pipe or conduit 2. The plate 11 curves in the direction of its length or flares outwardly, so as to give proper direction to the drainage-water and insures-its rapid discharge in the pipe 2. The plate 11 may be properly described as acollector, since it performs the function of gathering the drainage-water and directing the same to the pipe 2. Braces or stays 1E2 connect the flared ends of the plate 'or collector 11, and a plate 13, supported thereby, receives the outer end of the shaft 6, which is journaled therein. The bar or support 14: is secured to the inner portion of the plate 11 in any substantial manner and extends across the receivingend of the pipe 2 and forms a support for the inner end portion of the shaft 6. Set-collars 15 upon the shaft 6 engage with the inner sides of the parts 13 and 14 and prevent longitudinal displacement of the shaft 6 and provide means of ready removal of said shaft when required for any desired purpose. It is intended that the plate or collector 11 be of such extent as to form ample protection for the levee or embankment and prevent a washing-away thereof by the current of drainage-water.
From the foregoing it is to be understood TIC that the discharge pipe or conduit 2 acts as a l embankment,a discharge-pipe extended theretie for connecting the plates 9 and 11 upon opposite sides of the levee or like embankment and is in turn braced by means of said plates, the latter acting as anchoring means and also serving as protectors to prevent water washing the earth from about the sides of the pipe in either direction.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In combination with a levee, dike or like embankment,a discharge-pipe extended therethrough and provided with an automatic closing-valve to prevent backflow therethrough and with mechanism for positively forcing the drainage therethrough, and plates upon opposite sides of the levee or embankment and having opposite ends of the discharge-pipe connected thereto, said pipe serving as a tie and the plates in turn acting as anchoring means and protectors, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with a levee, dike or like embankment,a discharge-pipe extended therethrough, a valve for preventing backfiow through said pipe and adapted to open to permit drainage therethrough, means for positively forcing the drainage through said pipe, and a plate connected to the receiving end of the said discharge-pipe and outwardly flared to form a collector for gathering the drainage and giving proper direction thereto, substantially as set forth.
3. In combination with a levee, dike or like through, means for positively forcing the drainage through said pipe, a Valve adapted for controlling the passage through said pipe to prevent backflow and admit of unobstructed discharge of the drainage, a plate fitted to the side of the levee facing the stream or body of water and having its vertical edges flanged to form abutments to prevent longitudinal displacement of said plate, substantially as described.

In combination, a levee, dike or similar embankment, a drainage-pipe extended therethrough, means for positively forcing the drainage therethrough, a valve adapted to prevent backfiow through said pipe, a plate supporting the receivingend of the discharge and outwardly flared to form a collector, a stay or brace connecting the outer ends of said plate, a complemental stay supported by the central portion of the plate and extended across the receiving end of the discharge-pipe, the two stays forming supports for the drainage-forcing mechanism, substantially as set forth.
