Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, J OHN W. STEPHENSON, of Toledo, Lucas county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Dust-Guard, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a journal-box constructed in accordance with my invention, the car-axle being shown in vertical crosssection. Fig. 2 is a plan View, partly in horizontal section, on the line II II of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line III III of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the packing-ring, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the lock by which the cover-plate and dust ring are retained.
My invention is designed to provide means for effectually excluding dust from. entering the rear end of a car-axle box. The problem of thus excluding the dust is a difficult one, because the contracted space at the back of such box makes it difficult to apply efficient devices for the purpose.
My invention accomplishes the result by very simple means which do not add substan tially to the'weight of the parts and which are not clumsy and can be removed and adjusted quickly.
In the drawings, 2 is the car-axle journal.
3 is the box, and I is the car-wheel hub. At the rear of the box, in a recess 5 thereon, is a ring 6 of L shape in cross-section. This ring has an opening of greater diameter than the diameter of the axle, so as to fitloosely thereon, and it also has freedom of movement in the recess 5. The ring 6 carries a packing-ring 7, which is sectional and is seated in the ring 6 and is held therein by a flat cover-ring 8, which fits against the ring 6 and against the rear face of the axle-box. The cover-ring 8 is provided at its upper portion with supporting projections 9, which rest upon the ring 6 and support the cover-ring, and the coverring may be held in place by locking devices 10, similar to those shown in my Patent No. 742,750, which are held to the axle-box by bolts 11, fitted with springs 12 and cotters 13, or the cover-ring may be otherwise held. It moves with the axle and with the ring 6 in the vertical motion of the axle and slides freely against the rear face of the box and back of the locks 10. The locks 10, unlike the locks of my said patent, do not slide with the axle; but the rings 6 and 8 slide independently of the locks. The locks 10 have pro jections 10, which [it in small recesses on the face of the journal-box, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5.
The use of the dust-guard ring 6 and the retaining-ring 8 makes the device extremely simple in construction and very light and enables it to be removed and adjusted quickly.

4. In combination with a journal-box, a dustguard comprising a packing-carrying ring placed loosely around the axle-opening, and a cover-ring fitting against the rear outer face of the journal-box over the said ring and supported thereby; substantially as described.

In combination with a journal-box, a dustguard comprising a packing-carrying ring placed loosely around the axle-opening, and a cover-ring fitting over the said ring and supported thereby, said cover-ring having a sliding bearing against the rear outer face of the journal-box; substantially as described.
