Be it known that 1, JOHN A. CARR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Im provements in M otor-Vehicles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in automobiles, and more particularly to driving and steering gear therefor.
The object in view is the provision of means for facilitating reversal of the driving mechanism while transmitting power to both the front and rear axles.
A further object in view is the provision of means for facilitating varying the speed of the driving mechanism by varying the relative degree of power transmitted.
With these and further objects in view the invention comprises certain novel constructions,combinations, and arrangement of parts. as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a top plan view of an automobile running-gear. Fig. 2 represents an enlarged detail sectional elevation of the steering-gear and surrounding parts. Fig. 3 represents a similar view of the reversing and speed-changing gear. Fig. 1 represents a diagrammatic view of the driving-shaft and axles, illustrating in dotted lines the various positions which the steering-axles may assume. Fig. 5 represents a vertical sectional view taken on the plane of line 5 5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 represents a front view of the partsseen in Fig. 2.

ordinary framing 1 is mounted upon the easing 2 of the rear axle 3, said axle being provided with the ordinary carrying-wheels t 4:. A shaft 5 is journaled in the framing 1 and extends longitudinally with respect to said framing and supports the front end thereof. The front end of the framing 1 preferably tapers to a bearing-sleeve 6, surrounding the shaft 5. Spaced rearwardly from the sleeve 6 is a similar sleeve 7, connecting the arms of the frame 1. Disposed between the sleeves 6 and 7 and surrounding the shaft 5 is a sleeve 8, carried by a bearing-block 9, said bearingblock extending forwardly from said sleeve and being formed with a second sleeve 10 and overhanging bearing-plates 11 11, projecting forwardly from the block. Similar bearingplates 12 12 extend rearwardly from a hingeblock 13 and inclose the plates 11, the plates 11 and 12 being pivotally connected together by bolts 14 1 1. The bolts 1 1 of course are in axial alinement, so that the hinge-block 13 is free to swing upon the block 9. The block 13 is formed with a sleeve 15, surrounding the front end of the shaft 5, the shaft 5 be ing provided with any common type of universal joint 16, arranged in alinement with the axis of the bolts 14. Arms 16 16' project forwardly from the block 13 and engage pins 17 17, fixed to the casing 18, surrounding the front axle 19, said front axle of course being fixed to and carried by the ordinary wheels 20 20. Fixed to the front of the shaft 5 is a' beveled or other suitable gear 21, meshing with a similar gear 22, carried by the axle 19. A plate 23 is bolted or otherwise suitably fixed to the bearing-block 9 and extends above the hinge-block 13 and carries at its front end a casing 24., in which is journaled the shaft 25 of a worm 26, the said worm 26 meshing with a segmental worm-rack 27, interposed between the plate 23 and the block 13 and fixed to the block 13. The free end of the shaft 25 carries a preferably beveled gear-wheel 26, with which meshes a similar gear 27. The wheel 27 is carried by ashaft 28, journaled in a bearing 29, said bearing 29 being carried by the plate 23. The upper end of the shaft 28 is connected by a universal joint 30 with an operating-shaft 31, extending upwardly to a point convenient for actuation by the operator and is of course provided with the ordinary hand-wheel, crank-arm, or other actuating means. (Not illustrated.) Thus it will be observed that by rotation of the shaft 31 the worm 26 may be actuated forcausing the rack 27 to move and said rack in its movement carrying the hinge-block 13 will of course swing the axle 19 upon its centhe parts may assume any of the angles indicated in Fig. 1.
i past the disks 32 and 33, and each carrying a pin extending into an annular groove in the hub of the respective disk, whereby movement of the given lever upon its pivot is designed to occasion corresponding movement of the respective disk longitudinally of its supporting-shaft. The free end of lever 35 carries a pivotally-mounted link 37, which link in turn connects with a lever 38, fulcrumed on the link 39, said link 39 being pivotally connected at its end opposite that engaging link 38 to the free end of the lever 36. A shaft or other operating means 40 extends forwardly to a point convenient for the operator and is adapted to be moved longitudinally for causing the levers 35 and 36 to approach and recede from each other, effecting a corresponding movement of the disks 32 and 33. Extend-ing transversely of and journaled in the framework 1 is a power-shaft 41, driven from any suitable source of power, (not illustrated,) and carrying a drivingpulley 42. Said pulley is mounted to move freely longitudinally of the shaft 41, and said shaft is made square, as illustrated, or otherwise constructed for causing rotation of the pulley 42 when the shaft rotatesl The hub of the pulley 42 is formed with an annular groove engaged by a yoke 43,carried bystandard 44, fixed to a sliding rack'45. The rack 45 is mounted to slide longitudinally upon any suitable supporting-bar 46, and a pinion 47 meshes with the teeth of the rack 45 for actuating the rack, the said pinion 47 being carried by a shaft 48, extending forwardly of and being journaled in the framework 1, any suitable connection being made with the shaft 48 for facilitating actuation thereof by the operator. It will thus be observed that rotation of the shaft 48 will cause longitudinal travel of the rack bar or slide 45 and a corresponding travel of the pulley 42.
In operation in order to start the machine it is only necessary to move the shaft 40 longitudinally to a sufficient extent for causing the disks 32 and 33 to engage the periphery of the pulley 42, assuming, of course, that the motor actuating the shaft 41 is in operation. If it is desired to increase the speed, it is only necessary to rotate shaft 48 for causing the pulley 42 to travel toward the center of the disks 32 and 33 and to reduce the speed reverse travel of the pulley 42 is necessary. Of course the decrease of speed by the approach of the pulley 42 toward the periphery of the disks 32 and 33 must necessarily mean an increase in the power transmitted. \Vhen it is desired to reverse the vehicle and cause the same to travel rearwardly, the rack 41 is caused to move longitudinally to its opposite extreme, as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, whereupon motion will be imparted from the pulley 42 to the disks 32 and 33 in an opposite direction from that formerly transmitted.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with front and rear axles and a framing carried thereby, of a shaft journaled in said framing, a bearing-block inclosing said shaft, a pivot-block pivotally engaging said bearing-block, rigid connections between said pivot-block and the front axle, means carried by the pivot-block for effecting movement of said shaft corresponding to pivotal movement of the front axle, a joint interposed in the length of said shaft for accommodating such movement, and intermeshing gearing carried by said axle and shaft.
2. In a device of the class described,the combination with front and rear axles and a framework, of a shaft journaled in said framework, a bearing-block interlocking with said framework, a pivot-block pivotally connected to said bearing-block, a sleeve on said pivotblock surrounding said shaft, a joint interposed in the length of the shaft between said blocks, intermeshing gearing carried by said shaft and front axle, and connections between said pivot-block and the front axle for effecting movement of the axle when said block is moved.
3. In adevice of the class described, the combination with front and rear axles and a framing carried thereby, of a block pivotally connected with said framing, a shaftjournaled in said framing, a universal joint interposed in the length of said shaft, connections between said block and shaft for effecting movement of the shaft with said block, intermeshing gears carried by said shaft and one of said axles, and means for swinging said block upon its pivot.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination with axles and a framing carried thereby, of a shaft journaled insaid framing, a joint interposed in the length of said shaft, a block pivotally connected with said framing and engaging said shaft at one side of said point, connections between said block and one of said axles for effecting movement of the axle with said block, intermeshing gearing carried by said shaft and said last-mentioned axle, and gearing for moving said block upon its pivot.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination with a framing and axles supporting the same, of abcaring-block interlocking with said framing, a shaft journaled in the framing and extending through said block, a pivotblock pivotally engaging said bearing-block, means carried by said pivot-block engaging said shaft for effecting movement of the shaft With the pivot-block, a joint interposed in the length of the shaft for accommodating movement with the pivot-block, intermeshing gearing carried by said shaft and one of said axles, a segmental Worm-rack fixed to said pivotblOCli, a plate fixed to said bearing-block and extending to a point contiguous to said wormrack, a casing carried by said plate, a Worm journaled in said casing meshing With said rack, and means for actuating said Worm.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination With front and rear axles, of a casing for said rear axle, a framing mounted on said casing, a shaft journaled in said framing and extending beyond the front end thereof, a bearing-block surrounding said shaft and interlocking With the front end of said framing, bearing-plates projecting forwardly from said block, a pivot-block surrounding said shaft, plates carried by said pivot-block inclosing said bearingplates, means pivotally connecting said plates, a joint interposed in the length of said shaft between said blocks, a casing for said front axle, arms projecting from said pivot-block and rigidly engaging said casing, means for swinging said pivotblock upon its pivot,-and intermeshing gearing carried by said shaft and front axle.
