To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WOLDEMAR REINHOLD H EINITZ, a citizen of the Kingdom of Saxony, and a resident of Ohemnitz, Germany, (whose post-office address is Neefestrasse 24,) have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cash-Registers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to cash-registers for the use of a number of salesmen, and has reference in particular to a device by means of which preparation is made for the adjustment of the distinctive mark or sign characterizing the salesman employing the register for the time being, so that the said mark can be recorded on the register being operated.
The essential feature of the invention is that by turning suitable keys slides or the like located in the register are adjusted or set in such manner that they perform the initial steps necessary for the actual adjustment (which is effected on operation of the register) of the respective salesmans mark or character which is to be recorded.
With this device there will naturally be combined means whereby the operation for adjustment of the slide also prepares in suitable manner for the opening of the till, which takes place on operation of the register.
If the device is provided on aregister with a plurality of tills corresponding to the number of salesmen, the arrangement must naturally be such that the adjustment of one of the slides simultaneously prepares for opening of the corresponding till.
.In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device according to my invention applied to a cash-register designed for the use of four salesmen, all the parts being shown in their normal position and a key illustrated in the uppermost hole. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line A A of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view corresponding to Fig. 1 of the device, but showing the salesmans mark corresponding to the uppermost hole duly set and illustrating the position for the time being of the various parts on record of the said sign. Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line B B of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 in plan, and Fig. 6 in vertical section, show to a larger scale one of the parts actuated by the salcsmens character-keys. Fig. 7 in side elevation, Fig. 8 in set ready for being recorded.

1 is the casing of the cash-register, and 2 a partition located within the same. On this partition there slides a plurality of radiallydisposed stop members 3, corresponding in number to the number of salesmen and each presenting a lateral lug 4. Adjacent to each slide is a vertical pin 6, provided with a rotary device or collar 5, presenting a laterally-projecting stud 7, Figs. 5 and 6. gages in an inclined slot 8, cut in the lug 4 of the corresponding slide 3. Above the collars 5 blocks 10, each perforated at 9, are aflixed to the partition 2, and through the holes 9 the tops of the pins-6 project. In this manner keyholes are presented to receive the barrel of the keys, constructed as shown in Figs. 7 to 9. The diameters of the various holes 9 and pins 6 are different, so that into any given keyhole only that key can be inserted which is especially made to fit it and which is in possession of the salesman to whom the particular keyhole has been allotted. Each key 11 has terminal projections 12, which on insertion of the key into its hole engage in corresponding recesses 13 in the collar 5, so that on the key being turned the collar is rotated with it, whereby the stud 7 is caused to depress the corresponding slide 3. Adjacent to the slides 3 there is also provided on the partition 2 a sliding locking-plate 14, presenting a plurality of hooked catches 15. Against the inclined surface of each of the latter there bears a stud 16, projecting from each slide 3, Figs. 1 and 3. If, therefore, one of theslides 3 is depressed, its stud 16 will push aside the corresponding catch with the plate 14, and immediately the stud leaves the inclined surface of the catch a spring 17 will return the plate to its initial position, whereby the catch 15 will grip over the stud 16, in which manner the slide 3 in question is held down or locked in its depressed position, Fig. 3. The lug 4: of the depressed slide 3 is now able to act as stop for a suitable device released on operation of the register, whereby the character or mark distinctive of the salesman in question and corresponding to the particular slide is Thus by depression of the slide by means of the corresponding key preparation is made for adjust- This latter enment of the corresponding salesmans mark prior to operation of the register. The locking device for the slides 3 is so arranged that a locked slide is only released again on operation of the registerthat is to say, only after a record has been effected by the recording mechanism in the manner to be described. To render withdrawal of the key prior to operation of the register impossible,a stop-pin 18 is providedl n the block and an elbowshaped slot 19 is cut in the end of the barrel of the key 11. On insertion of the key in its hole the vertical portion of the slot 19 receives the pin 18, and on the key being turned the latter enters the horizontal portion of the slot, whereby the key is locked in position in the manner of a bayonet-joint, and withdrawal is now impossible.
The manner in which in the present construction the salesmans mark is set on operation of the register is as follows: A shaft 20 is mounted in the casing 1, and from it there extends an arm 28, having an arc-shaped limb 21. The latter ordinarily occupies the position shown in Fig. 1 and is locked in such position by a bolt 22. This latter is secured with capability of sliding on the side walls of the casing 1 and is forced by a cam-disk 24: on the shaft 23 into a notch 25 in the are 21. On rotation of the shaft 20 by the crank-handle 32 the bolt 22 will, corresponding to the shape of the cam 24, be drawn out of the notch 25 by a spring 26, secured to the vertical portion of the bolt, whereby the limb 21 is released. The latter, by reason of gravity, now turns on the shaft 20, falling backward until a catch 27 on its front end strikes the lug 4 of that slide 3 which is locked in depressed position, Fig. 3. The arm 28 carries a type-bar 29, provided with type 30 for each salesmans mark. The exact position in which the type-bar is adjusted is determined by the extent of descent of the limb 21, so that that type 30 which corresponds to the depressed slide 3 is brought over a counter-block 31, whereby the sign or mark can be printed in suitable manner upon a paper web 33. On further rotation of the crank-handle a finger 3 1, carried by the shaft 23, strikes a finger 35, projecting from the arm 28, whereby the are 21 is raised and returned to its initial position. Hereupon it will be immediately locked again by the bolt 22 being forced into the notch 25 in the are 21 by the cam 24. Toward completion of the rotation of the crank a second finger 36, mounted on the shaft 23, will strike a plate 37, sliding on the partition 2, and force it outward. A stud 38, projecting from the slide 37, engages in a cam-slot 39, furnished in the locking-plate 1 L. When, therefore, the slide 37 is forced outward, the stud 38, by reason of the shape of the slot 39, will force the locking-plate aside, and the hooked catch 15 thus releases the stud 1.6, so that the slide 3 is now disengaged. A
spring 41, Figs. 2 and 1, on the latter will now cause it to rise into its initial position, whereupon the key 11 can be withdrawn. At the same time thelocking-plate 14: will be returned to its first position by the spring 17 and the slide 37 to its normal position by the spring 40, secured to it and to the partition 2.
It must be clearly understood that the abovedescribed devices for adjusting the salesmans mark on operation of the register, together with the mechanism for locking the slide 3, can without'departure from the spirit of the invention be replaced by any other suitable contrivances. The essential feature characterizing the intention is, as already stated, that by turning suitably-shaped keys slides or the like, located in the register, are adjusted in such manner that preparation is made for the setting and recording of the salesmans mark to be efi'ected by subsequent operation of the register.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination with the stop members, of distinctive rotary devices having connection with the stop members constructed to throw said members to stopping position when the devices are rotated, distinctive removable means for operating said rotary devices and recording mechanism controlled by the stop members.
2. The combination with the stop members, of distinctive rotary devices having connection with the stop members constructed to throw said members to stopping position when the devices are rotated, distinctive removable means for operating the rotary devices, means for holding one of said removable means in a rotary device while a stopping member is in stopping position, and recording mechanism controlled by the stop members.
3. The combination with the stop members,
of distinctive rotary devices having a connection with said stop members constructed to throw said stop members to stopping position when the rotary devices are rotated, locking mechanism to hold said stop members in stopping position, recording mechanism operated by the stop devices, and means for returning the recording mechanism to a non-recording position and for operating the locking mechanism to release the stop members.
1. The combination with the stop members, of rotary devices, pin and cam slot connections between the rotary devices and the stop members, and recording mechanism controlled by the stop members.
5. In a cash-register, in combination, movable members,distinctive removable means for actuating each of the same from without the apparatus, means for automatically locking the actuated movable members, means for preventing withdrawal of the said removable actuating means prior to printing after locking of the said movable members, type-carrying means controlled by the main shaft of the apparatus engaging with the said movable members after their actuation, means actuated by the said shaft for restoring the said type-carrying means to the initial position after printing and means operated by the said shaft for unlocking the said movable members after printing substantially as described.
