To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM I. FERRIs, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Stamford, county ofFairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety-Clips for Holding Pens and Pencils, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for holding pens and pencils in the pocket, and has for its object to provide a cheap, simple, reliable, and desirable clip wherebya pencil or penholder or a fountainpen may not only be held securely in the pocket, but may be available at all times for instant use and at any time again be readily and quickly secured either in the same or some other pocket.
' My purpose is to produce a clip which shall combine simplicity and efiiciency with lightness and durability, and I attain the-objects of my invention by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my construction. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a front elevation showing the method of securing a fountain-pen in the pocket.

My invention consists of a spring S, one end B of which is firmly secured to the pen or pencil P and projecting therefrom in a direction substantially parallel with the long axis of the pen or pencil and terminating at its free end in a ball-point K on the side of the spring next the pencil or penholder. The ball-point of the spring forms one jaw of a clamp of which the pencil or penholder formsthe other jaw, and this clamp by the action of the spring engages the pocket V and holds the pen or pencil securely therein.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a safety-holder, or clip, for penholders or pencils, the combination of a pencil or penholder, a spring directly secured thereto and projecting in a direction substantially parallel with the long axis thereof, andaball-point on the free end of said spring adapted normally to bear upon the pencil or penholder and so related thereto as to form in conjunction therewith a clip or clamp to engage the pocket, substantially as shown and described.
