IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES POR SHAVING RATTAN.

TO ALL WIIQM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, LEVI HEYWOOD, ofGardncr, in the county of Wlorcester, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for Shaving Rattan, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in whichp v Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved machine.

Figure 3 is an elevation of its opposite side.
Figure 4 is a vertical sectionon the line :z: z of-ig. 1.
Figure 5 is a transverse section on the line g/ y of figs. 2 and 4.
Figure G is a transverse section on the line z z of figs. 2 and 4.
Figures 7, 8, and 9, details to be referred to.
The object of my invention is 'to reduce rattan to a uniform thickness and width after having been split inte strips; and my invention consists in a knife or scraper for planing down or removing the portion of the l' joint of the rattanafter having been cut into strips; and my invention also consists in one or more knives for shaving the strip on the inner side, next to the pith, in combination with a pair of knivesagainst which the edges of the strip are brought in contact as it is fedialong, afterfhaving been shaved on its under side, hy'which means the joint is first removed, and the strip is then reduced to the uniform thickness and width desired.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I`will proceed to describe the man nei` in which I have carried it out. c
In the said drawings, is the framework -insuitable bearings, in which revolves the shaft B, one of its extremities being provided with a drum, C, over which run's the belt which communicates power thereto from the driving-shaft, (not shown.)
The portion of the shaft B within the sides a a of the framework is provided with two circular flanges, b b, to be described hereafter, (see fig. 5;) and the extremity of the shaft B, opposite the drum C,l has secured thereto a cog-wheel, I), which drives a corresponding wheel, E, on the extremity of a shaft, I", also provided with two circular flanges, c c, similar to those b b. K K are cam-shaped levers pivoted, at 10, to the framework, one lever being employed at each end of the transverse knives d d, tg clamp them firmly in place when adjusted laterally in their slotsff.
The ends of cach of the blocks d, with its knife d secured thereto, rest in slots g g, formed for their reception in the sides a a; and the blocks are raised or lowered by operating screws k, in order to regulate the space between the bottom of each roll I I and theknife-edge under it, and consequently the thickness of the shaving to be removed from the strip. The alternate rolls Il I are placed in bearings in the framework, so that their centres will be directly over the centres of rolls L L', of corresponding form and size, the rolls I L and I' L constituting two pairlof feed-rolls, by and between which the strip of split rattan is carried against the transverse knives d d. The two upper feed-rolls, I and I, and the upper ange-roll or shaft, F, are free to be pressed upward by the entrance of strips of varying thickness against the resistance of rubber springs z', which allow the said rolls to'yield as required, the degree of downward pressure being regulated bythe screws le 7c. i
M M are separate and independent knives, of the form shown in figs. 1, 4, and 9, which rest against the inclined portion 11 of the front of the framework, and are moved up and down thereon within guides ZZ, screwed thereto at'm, by mechanism Vnow to be described.
In the tcp of the inclined front portion of the framework are formed slots n n, for the reception of pins o o projecting from the backs of the tops of the knives M M. p p are spiral Springs,.the upper ends of which are secured to the pins o o, while their lower ends are secured to studs r 1", projecting. from the inside of the inclined portion of the framework, the springs serving to constantly keep the knives M M down upon the strip of'rattan, as seen in iig. 4, until relieved to enter new strip/s, by operating the handles of leversN N, pivoted,

fit over a pin,`13, screwed inthe top of'each knife. f

The strips of split rattan are rst passed through apertures in the guides O O, when the knives M M are raised by bringing down the handles of the levers N N, to allow ofthe stripsbeing entered' ,un'der'them,` after which the knife-edges are brought down upon the strips by the resistance-of the springspp, and as the .feed-rolls carry'along the strips, the portions of the joints ofthe rattan thereon arc planed down `or scrapedoi smooth, as required. i
After passingthrough the first pair of feed-rolls, I" L, the strips are conducted through guides P P, and between the presser-,roll I and the edge of the'first transverse knife,ld, the roll being provided .with yielding bearings, to allow the strips, as they pass under, to raise them, to insure the planing ott' of a thin shaving from the under or pith-side of the rattan. u Y' The strips now pass between the next guides, P P, and thence through the next pair of feedroll's, I L, after which they are guided between the presser-roll I and edge of the next transverse knife, d, which is carefully adjusted to bring its edge in a. position, with respect to the bottom of th'e roll I, to insure the taking o of another thin shaving from the lower or pith-side of the strip, thus reducingiit to the thickness required. After passing through another pair ofguides P P, the strips are carried between the circular flanges b b and c c of thesliafts B and F, and arel conducted against the edges of a couple of pair of knives, R R, iig. 8, one of each pair ofwhich is placed on each side of and close to the surface of the flanges, by which moans the edges of thel strips are cut Adown and brought to a uniform width throughout their length.' i
l The edges of the knives R R are adjusted in their proper position, relatively tol the flanges b c c,by supporting their blades in slotted bars tt, extending down vertically through a plate, S, attachedv to ther-ear of the framework, the slotted bars being secured in place by screws, 15, the lower end of each bar t being also provided with a screw, 16, which may be turned in either direction, to raise orlower the heel`of the knife, and thus'give the blade'the inclination desired. l ,l i
In the foregoing description, I have spoken of two knives M M, and two pairs of knives R R, but it is evid ent I may use only4 one knife M, and but one pair of knives R R, or I may use any number of knives BIM, and ak corresponding number of pairs of knives R R, if desired, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
In reducing the strip to the required thickness, I prefer to employ more than one transverse knife cl, as it is easier to plane offl more than one thin shaving than a single thick one, the strip being thereby passed more rapidly through the machine, and` the thin shavings are more valuable than thick shavings for upholstering PUYPOSOS.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The arrangement of the knife M, constructed and operated substantially as described. I also claim the arrangement of the knives d, in combination with the presser-rolls I Iand operating-` screws z, all constructed andoperating substantially as set forthand for theA purpose stated.
