Description

WASHINGT OGRAPH N. PETERS. PMOTG-LITH @uiten ,tates @stmt @fficeI` Lene-rs Patent 1ro. 79,960, dated my 14, 186s.

@Dit Stimuli trferrsitiifintlgese 'Eritrea utent tnt limiting 'gait ci 111e sami "ro ALL vWHOM I'r MArcoNcERN: l
Bc it known that I, JAMES P. CMIINGSQOE lewpout,v in theceunty of Campbell, end Stute of Kentucky,
have invented a new and, usefhl Improvement in Fire-Plugs; and I" do liereby'declureA the following to be a.Y
accompanying drawings, formingpart of thisV specification,'and'in vsihich-A Figure l represents longitudinal section of ahrc-plug embodyingniy improvements.
Figure 2, o perspective view ofthe block. Y
Figure 3, perspective view of-the valve.
Figure'; a, perspective view of the stuffing-box, guid'ea.nd'stop; and* Figure -nn lelevation of the stock. i i v a, may represent the-stock; b, the valve-scat; c, the vulve; d, the waste-stop; e, the waste-hole in the leg of the vlvmf,4 thewaste-hole inthe stock; g; the rod'g. z, the cup g', z', the nut; j, the end of the nut, projecting above the cap; k, the stuirlngbox, guide; and stop; l5 the flange on the stuffing-box; in, theslot in vthe guide; fn, the block in the-slot; o, the pin holding the block on the rod; undp, the nut holding the valve on the rod:
The stock a is made ofcast iron orl other metal, of any desired size or design as to outside* appearance, and is connected to the water-pipe in' the ground at A','1ind may be either screwed. fast,-as shown Vin the-drawing, or boted;A Upon the lower end', or that which is connected to the water-pipe, is placed the valve-seat l, fornied by fittings. wood or gum ring into'a. 'groveturncdin the end of the stock. i
The upper end of'the stockabovegr'ound is formed with a. flange, to 'which is fittedv the cap, L, which is. held in place by bolts'.' In thetop of the cap u recess is made to receivethe nut z', in which is @thread to fit the screwon the upper cnil of the rod g. Thenut z' hase collar, upon which it rests onthe bottom of the recess in the cap, and`is long enongh'to allow it to'project out-of the top of thecap, and vfornire. square on the end at iffor'th-e reception of n wrench by which to operate the vulve; In- .the recess in fthe cap is cut u thread, into Vn'hich'is screwed a washer., Vpassing oyerthe nut until it beurs upon theeollur on the nut;r The nut is thus held in place, 'and` allowed to revolve between thewasher und bottom of the recess. I I
'uleleaxg and exact description of the construction and operation of the suine, reference being had top the Under the cap [is placed the combined stuingbox, guide, and stop c, which `are forrned vull in one piece,. having a`llangeon the upper end, Z, and held in pince by bolts pnss'ingthr'ough the unge on the stock d. Its lower part projects down into the stock, and has un elongated slot, m, cast in it which forms the guide'oud stop.
Y A The rodg passes through the stu'ing-box and guide in the centre. Upon the rod g and in'the slot m .is
placed the blockn, throgh which the rod also-passes, the block being-held fast tothe rod by the pin o pussing through them. On'the .lower end of the rod is placed the vulve c, made of brass or other metal, and heving 'four leg-sor Vwings,connect-ed:it their Iupper ends by a. ring, in order to strengthen them. 'The end of theistock is bored out, and the vulve-legs turned ol`,` sons tomake a t. v
v Fornied-inLn-widened portionof oneof thelegs is a'depression, about one inch in diameter and one-quarter deep, communicating with the interior of thcrulifeP by ineens of a' contracted aperture. `A disk, of gum, leather, or other' suitablcsubstance, being placed in the-depression, forms thev wastestop d, und below said waste-stop is drilled thefwastc-hole the distance betweenlsu'id waste-stop'and wastelhole being determined bythe distance the vulve'moves. Directly opposite the waste-hole e, when the valve is closed, or opposite the waste-stop d when the valve is opened,is*frilled the wustr-hc'xlef-inl the stock.` The rod passes through the centre ofthe valve,- andis held by the ut'p on theend of the'rod, and closesL against the'valve-seut bl The plug being closed, n wrench is Vapplied at the square on thev end of the nut z', by turning which the vulve c is made to open, the block n sliding down the slot in; The blcck, being held f ast to the rodvg by the pin 0,:the rod vis prevented from turning or getting out of place, The block, being screwed down to the-bottom ofthe slot, lstops against the gui'de. .The wasteLstop d being brought oppositeithe waste-hole f, in the stock a, the pressure of the water pussing through the plug, and out of thedischnrge-screw acting egalinst the leather or gum in said waste-stop through the small hole in the bottom of its containing-depression, Ipressing it up tight against the waste-holef in the stock, and thus preventing any water from wasting. In closing, the waste-hole e in the leg of the valve will be brought up opposite the waste-hole f in the stock, and the water remaining in the' stock )allowed to vrun out, and thus prevent the freezing up of the plug in cold weather.
What Iy claim as my invention, and desire' to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The stuiing-box, guide,'a.nd stop 7c, in combination'with thel block n and rodgfsubstantially as described.
2. The stop d and waste-hole e, formed in one of the legs of the valve in the manner explained, and arranged relatively to the waste-opening f in the stock, and the valve-seat b, to operate in the manner and for the`pur pose specified. i
3. The stuffing-box, guide,4 and stop lc, and' block in, as arranged in relation to the valve e, substantially as described. i
