Description

PATENTED SEPT. 12, 1905.
S. P. VANCE.
WHEEL OULTIVATOR OR SULKY PLOW.
APPLICATION FILED APILY, 1905.
I HHHIHIHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIHI A'NDREW a mum: on, wmcumnsnw UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIDNEY F. VANCE, OF SALMON, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO I-IUBBERT L. HARRISON, OF SALMON, TEXAS.
WHEEL-CULTIVATOB OR SULKY-PLOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 12, 1905.
Application filed April 7, 1905- Serial No. 254,265.
To all whom, it may concern:
. Be it known that I, SIDNEY F. VANCE, of Salmon, in the county of Anderson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheel-Cultivators or Sulky-Plows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention appertains more particularly to improvements in wheel plows or cultivators, the purpose of the present invention being to provide means whereby the plow or cultivator beam may be attached to a wheeled supporting-frame in such a manner that the front end of the plow-beam may be raised and lowered, the construction also providing means for readily detaching the plow-beam from the frame, and when attached to the frame the connections are such that the plow will automatically adjust itself and enter the ground to adepth determined by the position of the draft and adjusting lever.
My invention consists in the combination, with a wheel-supported frame having hangers, a swinging bail detachably secured to the hangers, links maintained in swinging engagement with the bail and connected to I each other to provide a loop, through which the plow-beam is passed, so that such beam will be in sliding engagement with the loop, and in connection with such attachment I employ a lever which is pivoted to the frame forward of the hangers, and to such lever the front end of the plow-beam is attached, so that the plow or cultivator will be drawn by the lever as the wheel-frame is moved across the field.
My invention also consists in the particular construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating one preferred form of my invention, Figure 1 is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, and Fig. 3 a detail view showing the swinging supporting-loop and end of the lever.
The main supporting-frame may be of any suitable construction, and,as shown, the frame A has an axle B, pole O, seat D, and a rack or toothed segment E, which is located in front of the seat and to one side of the draftpole. The frame or axle thereof has attached depending hangers F, each hanger having a plurality of vertically-disposed perforations for the reception of outturned ends of bails G. The cross portion of the bail carries links H H, such links being connected by the crossbar of the bail and by a bolt, and in practice I prefer to mount upon the cross-bar of the bail .and the bolt rollers which engage the upper and lower edges of the plow-beam. The links and bail provide a swinging loop or connection, through which is loosely passed the beam of the plow, so that said beam is attached to the frame to be susceptible of both a swinging and a sliding connection.
The frame A below the segment E has fulcrumed thereto a lever I, the lower end of said lever having formed therein a recessd and to the front of said recess notches t" to receive the clevis or a link attached to the forward end of the plow-beam.
By means of the construction shown by simply operating or moving the lever I the plow can be raised, lowered, and adjusted to vary the depth of the furrow, and as there is a sliding and swinging connection between the frame and the plow-beam the plows will automatically adjust themselves, being controlled by the position of the lever. The leveris provided with means for locking the same to the segment.
It will be noted that in a cultivator or'plow of this character the draft-animals are hitched to the frame rather than to the beam of the plow.
If desirable, the frame may be made to carry a series of levers and hangers, so that a plurality of plows or cultivators may be used, and as such change will be a mere addition and duplication of parts I do not deem that it is necessary to illustrate the same.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Inasulky-plow, awheel-supported frame having fulcrumed thereon a lever which extends both above and below its fulcrum, a plow-beam that is coupled directly to the lower end of the lever and below the wheel-supported frame, hangers rigidly attached to the wheel-frame, a loop which encircles the plowbeam and is maintained in swinging engagement with the hangers, substantially as shown.
2. In a plow-frame, a lever fulcrumed directly to the frame so as to depend therefrom,
loop and is coupled directly to the lower end of the lever, substantially as shown.
3. Ina plow, aWheel-frame-having hangers 'cesses with which a link or elevis may enwhich depend therefrom, abail maintained in gage, a segment attached to the frame and I engagementwiththe hangers, connected links 11163118 for locking the leverinengagement carried by the bail, rollers for engagement withsaid segment, substantially as shown.
