PACKING-PAD,
Patented Aug. 29, 1905.,
Application filed February 8, 1905. Serial No. 244,791.
' To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT D. ALEXANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ur: banna, in the county of Middlesex and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing Pads, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to packing-pads for use more particularly in packing furniture and analogous arts, such as casket-linings and the like, and has'for its object to so construct the same that it may be cheaply manufactured, can be easily handled, and the cushioning portion of the same will not disintegrate, but will'be held in its proper relative position to the backing.
In the drawings forming a part of .this specification, and in which like symbols of reference represent corresponding parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the pad. Fig. 2 is a view of the backing or holder for the excelsior, showing the different ways of spreading the paste thereon; and Fig. 3 is a modified form of the pad, showing the backing or holder on both sides of the excelsior.
In constructing my packing-pad I first take a backing or holder 1, of paper or other flexible or light material, upon which I place in dots or strips some pasty material 2, and upon this paste I place the excelsior or equivalent material 3. It will be observed that I do not completely cover the paper or holder with paste, for I have discovered that the same makes the-article too rigid or unyielding for The paste is put on in strips or dots, preferably dots, over the surface of the paper, and it thus permitsthe excelsior or equivalent material to move with relation to the backing.
In the modification I show a backing on both sides of the excelsior; but as this is not absolutely necessary for packing and the other form is cheaper it is usually followed. For
some purposes, however, both sides are bet ter backed.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A packing-pad, consisting of one or more backings, excelsior or equivalent material on the backing or backings, and paste or the like connecting at intervals the excelsior or equivalent material to the backing or backings, so that the excelsior or equivalent material formed into continuous layers with relation to the backing or backings and the same will have a yielding action.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in. presence of two witnesses:
ALBERT D. ALEXANDER. Witnesses: 1
