To a. whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. SAYLEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Electrical Meters, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to electric meters, and particularly to an improved arrangement of a compensating coil and adjusting mechanism therefor.
In electric meters, such as wattmeters, there is opposition to starting, owing to frictional resistances, and a compensating coil is associated with the armature to overcome these resistances. As these resistances also vary for dilferent instruments and also in the same instrument under varying conditions, adjusting mechanism must be provided for the compensating coil. In meters of this kind the armature is subjected to the influence of series coils, which are usually disposed in parallel vertical planes, one at each side of the armature-spindle and each embracing part of the armature. These coils are usually disposed horizontally, and I provide a compensating or starting coil of the same size as the series coils and lying in a plane parallel to the plane of these series coils. Improved adjusting mechanism is provided whereby the coil may be secured in any position from that of maximum eifect on the armature when disposed horizontally, like the series coils, toan angular position within its plane to lessen its efiect upon the armature. Modified adjusting mechanism also adapts the coil to be moved vertically within its plane to thus also vary its effect on the armature.
My invention will be best understood with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation front view of a meter embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the series-coils armature and adjusting mechanism. Fig. 3 shows a modification of the adjusting means, and Fig. 4 shows another modification thereof.
The armature 1 is provided with windings 2 and secured to the spindle 3, pivoted in pivotscrews 4 and 5. The windings are suitably connected with a commutator 6, mounted on the spindle and engaged by the brushes 7 and 8. Series coils 9 and 10 are disposed in parallel vertical planes, one embracing each side of the armature and supported from supportingarms 11 and 12, extending from the meterframe 13. A damping-disk 14 is secured to the upper part of the spindle and travels between damping-magnets 15, the upper part of the spindle also engaging with recording mechanism 16.
A compensating or starting coil 17 is of the same mechanical dimensions as the series coils and may be mounted in front of said coils in a vertical plane parallel to the planes of the series coils.
In the modification shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the starting-coil is secured to an arm 18, pivoted at one end to the supporting-post 19, extending from the meter-frame at one side of the series coils. At the other side of the series coils an adjusting-arm 20 is secured at its lower end to the post 19 by the pivot-pin 21 and is provided with the slot 22. The threaded stem 23 of the thumb adjusting-nut24 extends through the slot for engagement with the threaded opening 25 in the free end of the starting-coil-supporting arm 18. By means of this adjustment the coil can be moved to assume various angles with respect to the series coils to produce the proper compensating effects on the armature. With the coil in the same horizontal position as the series coils the eifect upon the armature will be maximum, and this effect will be decreased in proportion as the angle of the coil with respect to the series coils is increased, or, in other words, its effect on the armature varies in proportion to the area of the armature embraced by the coil in a horizontal direction.
In Fig. 3 is shown a modified arrangement of the adjusting mechanism, and a slotted vertical armis provided at each side of the series coils, being secured to the meter-frame instead of being pivoted. A thumb-screw is then provided for each end of the startingcoil-supporting arm and the coil thus adjusted vertically to produce the same compensating effects as accomplished by the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2. A combination of these two arrangements might also be employed, as shown in Fig. 4, in which the coil may be adjusted both vertically and angu larly within its vertical plane. Here, how ever, an additional arm 26 is pivoted to eacl end of the starting-coil-supporting arm 18 and the thumb-screws engage in threaded openings 27 at the free end of these additional arms. The coil can thus be adjusted vertically or angularly, or both.
In Fig. 1 the circuit arrangements for this meter are shown. The series coils are connected serially in circuit and in the limb a of the measured circuit. The pressure-circuit for the, meter extends from the limb a and serially includes the starting-coil, the armature-winding, and may also include an ad justing-resistance R.
Many other modifications in the arrangement and construction of this adjusting mechanism will suggest themselves, and I donot, therefore, wish to be limited to the precise construction thereof shown.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In an electrical recording-meter, the combination with an armature, of a field-magnet coil therefor, and an auxiliary field-coil adjacent to the field-coil and adjustable within a plane parallel to the plane of the series coil.
2. In an electrical recording instrument, the combination with an armature, of a main fieldcoil therefor, an auxiliary field-coil disposed inaplane adjacent to the plane of the main field-coil, said auxiliary coil being adjustable its plane and movable away from or toward the main coil, and means for securing said auxiliary coil in any position of adjustment.
3. In an electrical recording instrument, the combination with an armature, of a main fieldcoil therefor disposed in a vertical plane, an auxiliary field-coil disposed adjacent to and outside of the main field-coil and disposed in a plane parallel to that of the main coil, said auxiliary coil being adjustable vertically in its plane, and means for securing said auxiliary coil in any position of adjustment.
4C. In an electrical recording-meter, the combination with an armature, of a main field-coil therefor, an auxiliary coil disposed adjacent to and outside ofthe main coil and adjustable in its plane to assume various angles with re spect to the main coil, and means for securing said coil in any position of adjustment.
5. In an electrical meter, the combination with an armature, of main field-coils therefor, an auxiliary field-coil pivoted at one end, said auxiliary coil being adjustable in its plane about said pivot to assume various angles with respect to the main coils, and means for securing said auxiliary coil in any adjusted position.
- 6. In an electrical meter, the combination with an armature, of a main field-coil therefor, an auxiliary field-coil adjacent to and outside of the main coil and pivoted at one side, said coil being adjustable in its plane about said pivot to assume various angles with respect to the main coil, and means for securing said auxiliary coil in any adjusted position.
7 In an electrical meter, the combination with an armature, of a series of main fieldcoils therefor, an auxiliary field-coil disposed adjacent to and outside of the main coils, a supporting-arm to which the auxiliary coil is secured, said arm being pivoted at one end, said aim being rotatable about its pivot to carry the auxiliary coil to assume various anadjacent to and outside of the field-coils, a sup-- porting-arm by which the compensating coil may be adjusted in its plane to assume various positions with respect to the armature, and means for securing said arm in any ad justed position.
10. In an electrical meter, the combination with an armature, of field-coils therefor,a compensating field-coil for the armature, a supporting-arm to which the compensating coil is secured, said arm being pivoted at one end and rotatable about its pivot to carry the compensating coil to various positions within its plane, a slotted member near the free end of the supporting-arm, and a thumb-screw engaging through said slotted member and with said arm, whereby said arm may be secured in any adjusted position.
11. In an electrical meter, the combination with an armature, of field-coils therefor, a compensating field-coil for the armature disposed adjacent to and outside of the field-coils, a supporting-arm to which the compensating coil is secured, said arm being pivoted at one end and rotatable about its pivot to carry the compensating coil to different positions within its plane and with respect to the field-coils, a slotted member disposed near the free end of said supporting-arm, and fastening means engaging the slotted member and said arm for securing said arm in any adjusted position.

In an electrical meter, the combination with an armature,of afield-coil therefor, a compensating coil disposed adjacent to the fieldcoil and in a plane parallel to that of the fieldcoil, a supporting-arm to which the compensating coil is secured, said arm being pivoted at one end and rotatable about its pivot to carry the compensating coil to various positions in its plane to vary the compensating effect thereof on the armature, a slotted member, and a thumb-screw engaging through the slotted member and with the supporting-arm for securing said arm and coil carried thereby pensating coil to different positions within its in any adjusted position. plane, and vertical supporting means to which 13.
