Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 22, 1905.
Application filed December 16, 1904, Serial No. 237,088x
T0 (LZZ whom, it Ina/y concern.-
Be it known that I, PHILo. H. VV'EAVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piston-Rod Packing; and I do declare the following to be a full, clcar, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, Which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to piston-rod packing; and the object of the invention is to pro vide an improved packing composed of metallic and non-metallic elements offering the least possible frictional resistance to the movement of the rod, preventing leakage, scoring of the rod, and shall not require frequent attention.
In the accompanying drawings I have at Figure 1 shown the application of my improved packing and attending parts in longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is an enlarged end view of the metallic packing member; Fig. 3, a side View thereof, and Fig. 4 a plan view of the spring for preventinglongitudinal displacement of said metallic member.
The invention consists of a longitudinallyslit metallic sleeve or member 1, surrounding the rod 2 and extending through the gland into the stuffing-box 4:, the portion inclosed by the stuffing-box being surrounded by a suitable soft packing 5, compressible about said tubular member by the said gland, said tubular member being held against longitudinal movement by the spring 6, attached to the gland-bolts and bearing upon the exterior end of the tubular member at the shoulder 7.
The tubular member is composed of brass or other metal of such nature as will reduce the frictional contact with the rod to a minimum. The longitudinal slit 8 of this tubular member is provided at its stuffing-box end with al ternately-disposed tongues and grooves 9 and 10, which tightly engage at their shoulders 11 to prevent leakagelongitudinally and at the same time leave a space along the slit to permit the soft packing extending a cireumferential pressure about the member and cause it to assume and maintain a close contact With the rod. This member is yieldable circumferentially, being preferably formed from sheet metal with its edge sheared mto tongue-and-groove form, as shown, and bent into tubular form. The abovereferred-to tubular member is further provided with peripheral hooks 12 at its stufling-box end, so that the soft stu'l'ling may be engaged thereby, wrapped around the member inserted in the box, and by turning said member assist greatly in positioning and packing said soft stul'ling previous to applying the gland to compress the same. The tubular member being of one piece yieldable to and contacting closely with the red by the circumferential pressure of the soft packing and composed of metal dissimilar to the rod and non-leakable longitudinally at the slit extending therethrough and held against longitudinal movement, it is evident that the combination on the whole makes a compact, practical, and serviceable means for the purpose intended.
Having thus fully shown and described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a piston-rod packing, the combination with therod and. stuffing-box, of bolts extending from said stuffing-box, a tubular circumferentially-spring-acting metal member fitted over said rod and extending into said stu'ifing-box, soft packing arranged in said stuffing-box around said tubular member, a gland fitted over theouter end of said tubularmember and said bolts adapted to compress said soft packing around the tubular member, a spring engaging the end of said tubularmember and over said bolts, and nuts carried by said bolts'to hold said gland and spring in op erative position, said tubular member being composed of a single piece of metal slit longitudinally with tongue-and-groove engaging portions, substantially as shown and set forth.
2. In a piston-rod packing, the combination with the rod and stuffing-box, of bolts extending from said stuifing-box, a tubular circumferentially-spring-acting metal member fitted over said rod and extending into the stuffingbox, soft packing arranged in said stuflingbox around said tubular member, a gland litted over the outer end of said tubular member and said bolts adapted to compress said,
soft packing around said tubular member, a spring engagingthe end of said tubular member and over said bolts, nuts carried by said bolts to hold said gland and spring in operative position, and one or more hooks extending from the periphery of said tubular member at its stuiling-box end to engage the soft packing, said tubular memberbeing composed of a single piece of metal slit longitudinally with tongue-and-groove engaging portions, substantially as shown and set forth.
3. In a piston-rod packing, a spring-metal tube adapted to engage over the piston-rod said member being slit longitudinally at one point in its periphery from end to end with laterally-engaging portions as shown, and a soft packing surrounding the inner end of said tube adapted to ciroumferentially compress said tube about the said rod, substantially as shown and set forth.
4. In a piston-rod packing, a spring-metal tube adapted to engage over the piston-rod, said member being slit longitudinally at one point in its periphery from end to end with laterally-engaging portions as shown, one or more hooks extending from the periphery of the inner end thereof, and a soft packing surrounding the inner end of said tube adapted to oiroumferentially compress the tube about the said rod, substantially as shown and set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
