Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, 1905.,
Application filed February 27, 1905. Serial No. 247,604,.
To It who/7t it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AN'roN Fooou, a subject 01 the Emperor of Austria-llungary, residing at No. 90 fl lugengasse, Vienna, Austria-Hungary, have invented new and useful .lmprovements in Railway-(far Couplings, oi which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved constructional Form of the arraiigement (protected by United States Patent No. 779,472) tor tigl'itening the engaged coupling and. for automatically untightening the latter when disci'lgaged by means of an eccentric, in which arrangement the movement of the eccentric which tightens the cou] )ling is el'lected by lever mechanism, whereby both parts are lirmly united and the automatic nntightening is caused by a weighted lever acting on the shalt instead of by unreliable springs, as hereto tore, said weighted lever being raised when tensioned and secured in this position by a tumbler which is z'tutomatically released when disengaging the coupling, and thus produces the automatic untightening.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 show the improved tightening and iimtightening means in plan and elevation oil? a coupling, and Fig. 3 shows a part oi the same in front elevation.
According to the present invention the shaft 27 is lixed beneath the butter-plate 19 and can be turned at will by the lever 39, Fig. l, which is attached to the ends of the shaft and adapted to be placed beneath the butter-plate 15) when not used. The shaft 2'? carries a two-armed lever d0 instead of the s n'ing-barrel and looped lever of United States Patent No. 779,472. The shorter arm of this lever 4L0 is connected by a rod 41 to the eccentric-lever 18 ot' the eccentric 17, while the longer arm is weighted by a weight L2, Fig. 2, which replaces the spring of the known construction. The hub of the lever 40 is provided with projections 433, and a horizontal tumbler 45, Fig. 3, which is attached to the bufl'er-plate 19 and tensioned against the projections L33 by a spring 4 1, arranged above the projections in such a manner that when the lever 4:0 is turned into the tightened position (indicated in Fig. 2 by dotted lines) the said tmnbler engages in one oi the projections :13, and thus locks the lever 4:0 in the tightened position.
ilhc s n'ing-drum 20, adapted for the uncoupling and connected to the uncoupling-lever 12 by the chain 22, is loosely and rotatably mounted on a vertical pivot 46 (instead of being keyed to the horizontal coupliiig-sha'lit, as heretofore,) and for the purpose ol uncoupling it can be turned in the direction of the arrow by means of lever mechanism 47 4-8, lixied beneath the larder-plate and shown in Fig. 1 in dotted lines. The s ning-drul'n 20 is provided on its periphery with a cam L9, in the path oli which the free end of the tumbler 45 projects, so that when the drum 20 turns in the direction 01 the arrow, Fig. i, .into the uncoupling position the cam t?) lifts the tram blerif), which thus releases the lever d0. The
latter turns under the action of the weight 42 into the position shown in Fig. 1, and thereby untightens the coupling.
.ltlaving now particularly described and ascertained the nature ol my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, .1 declare that what l claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-- .ln eccentric-actuated tightenii'lg and automati :ally-untightening means :lor automatic railway-car couplings, the combination of a shaft, a two-armed lever mounted thereon, a weigl'lt on one end of said lever, an eccentric, a lever 18 connected thereto, a rod connecting the other arm of the two-armed lever to said lever 18, projections on said two-armed lever, a tumbler engaging with said projections to lock the two-armed lever against movement, a spring-drum having a cam on its periphery and means for rotating said drum to bring the cam in engagel'nent with the tumbler to unlock the parts, substantially .lescribed.
i n tcsti mony \vhereol I have signed my name to this s pecilicatlon 1n the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ANTON FODOR.
