Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Aug. 15, 1905.
Application filed October 29, 1904. Serial No. 230,516.
To ail whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that l, Enwm B. TEMPLE, a citizen oi the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Air-Brakes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinveution, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to air-brakes on railroad trains; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
iln the drawings, Figure l is a plan view showing a diagram of a railroad-car provided with appliances according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a detailed plan view showing the connections between one of the doors and the train-pipe. Fig. 3 is a side view of the same.
A. is a railroad-car of any approved construction.
B is the air-cylinder which operates the brake mechanism, and C is the train-pipe. The air-brake mechanism is of any approved construction, and the train-pipe under the car extends under all the cars of the train and contains compressed air while the train is in motion and the brakes are not applied. The compressed air is let out of the train-pipe in order to apply the brakes in the ordinary manner, and the air-brake mechanism is not herein described at greater length, as it is of any approved construction.
In order to prevent the train from being started before the doors are closed, and in order to prevent the numerous accidents which occur from the premature starting of the train, the following apparatus is provided.
Dis one of the side doors of the car A. This door is a sliding door at about the mid dle oi the car; but it may be a hinged door or a door in any other position, and all the doors of the car may be provided with appliances according to this invention.
E is a pipe for compressed air which is connected to the train-pipe and which is provided with a valve E, which is arranged in convenient proximity to the door D. An outlet pipe or branch E extends from the valve to any convenient point.
G is a toothed wheel secured on the spindle f of the valve F, and H is a toothed rack secured to the door and engaging with the said toothed wheel. The valve F is a stop-valve of any approved construction. This valve remains open as long as the door is open, and passengers can enter or leave the car. As this valve is open, there is little or no pres sure of air in the train-pipe, and the airbrakes are consequently applied, so that the train cannot be started.
When the car-door is closed, it closes the valve F, and when the last car-door has been closed the air-pressu re rises in the train-pipe. The motorman or engineer is notified of the closing of all the car-doors by his pressuregage, which is connected with the trairrpipe, and is thereby enabled to start the train without delay.
The opening of a car-door operates to apply the air-brakes automatically, so that the train is quickly stopped.
hat T claim is 1. The combination, witha railroad-carprovided with a door, and air-brake mechanism provided with a train-pipe which contains compressed air when the brakes are not applied; of an air-relief pipe connecting the said trainpipe with the atmosphere, and a stop-valve inserted in the said air-relief pipe and operatively connected with the said door so that the said door and valve are opened and closed simultaneously.
2. The combination, with arailroad-carprovided with a door, and air-brake mechanism provided with a train -pipe which contains compressed air when the brakes are not applied; of an air-pipe connected to the said train-pipe. a stop-valve inserted in the said air-pipe, a toothed wheel secured on the operating-spindle of the said valve, and a toothed rack secured to the said door and engaging with the said wheel, so that the opening and closing of the said door and valve are etlected simultaneously.
In testimony whereoil have al'lixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWlN B. TEMPLE.
