Be it known that .LW'rNtrHnor M. JAMESON, a citizen of thellnited States, and a resident oli Cambridge, county of Middlesex, State of lvlassachusetts,have invented an lmprovement in Devices for FormingVVire ll l(tt-Frames, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specilication, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
rlhis invention relates to devices for forining twisted-wire hat-frames 'for ladies hats; and ithas JFor its object the production of certain novel features of construction and arrangement wherebjT the construction of the hat-frame is facilitated.
The various novel features of the invention will be vfully described in the subjoined speci- [ication and particularly pointed out in the following claims.
Figure 1 is a partial sectional view oi a device for forming wire hat-'trames embodying my present invention, taken on the irregular linel 1, Fig. 2, and to avoid confusion l have shown only two of the.diametrically opposite supports provided with the supporting members for the round-and-round wires of the hat-trame. Fig'. 2 isa top or plan View of the device shown in Fig. 1, only two otl the supports being shown as provided with the wire-supporting members.
The baseis shown in Fig. 2 as comprising two semicircular parts or members 1 and 2, hinged together at 3, the part 2 being firmly attached by screws f1 to a disk-like head Fig. 1, secured to or forming part of a depending tubular shank (i, adapted to sli p down over an upright post 7, rigidly secured to a table or other suitable stand S. (Shown in section in Fig'. 1.) A slotted ear 9 on the partl oi' the base adjacent its periphery has pivotally mounted thereon at 10 a combined locking member and collapsing member 11, said device being notched at its inner end at 12 to normally embrace the part 1 and the disk 5. Ey lifting the member 11 the toe 13 thereof is withdrawn Yfrom the disk and the part 1 oi" the base can be swung upward on the hinge as a it'nlcrum to thereby collapse the base, this operation being e'tl'ected when it is desired to removed a completed hat-trame.
The locking device forms no part of my present invention and is not claimed herein.
A series oi' l..-shaped supports are carried by the base, and in the present embodiment of my invention said supports are shown as integral with the base portions 1 and 2, each support comprising a radial foot Maud an upright portion 15, (see Fig. 1,) the feet or extensions 14 projecting radially beyond the base. Each supportis slotted, as at 14X 15X, (see Fig. l.) and on one vertical face each support is recessed to leave shoulders 16 and 17 at right angles to each other. A head-wire-snpporting member, shown as a short flat metal arm 18, is adj ustably connected with the upright portion 15 of each l.-shaped support by a headed clamping-bolt 19 and nut 20, (see Fig. 2,) the head of the bolt being' cut away at 21 to rest against the shoulder 17, thereby preventing rotation ol the bolt when the nut 2() is set up or loosened. By easing up on the nut the member 18 can be raised or lowered with relation to the base and also adjusted radially about the clamping-bolt as a center to provide for the size variations in the head-wires, the headwire being indicated in Fig. 1 by dotted lines at le.. Fach of the head-wire-supporting members has formed in its outer edge a wire-seat 22, opening outward or at the outer edge ot the member.
Crown-wire-supporting members are shown as elongated and longitudinally-curved iiat arms 23, preferably made of ilat metal, and each having' a wire-seat 24 at or near its upper end, the lower end of said member 23 having an elongated curved ,slot 25 to receive the shank of a headed clan1ping-bolt26, passed through the slot 15X ol the upright portion o1 each oi' the l...-shaped supports and having its scribed with relation to the heads o1 the clamping-bolts 19, nuts 27 setting up the bolts and holding the members 23 in adjusted position. These members are of such length and shape, as will be seen by reference to Fig. 1, that their wire-seats 24 are located above the head-wire-supporting members, and by adjusting' the members 23 the general shape and dimensions of the crown-wire c (see dotted lines, Fig. l) can be varied within relatively wide limits.
As a matter ol'I practice the main adjustment of the head-wire-supporting members will be radial only to increase or decrease the diameter o1' the liead-wire, the variations in the height of the crown and its lateral dimensions being secured by adjusting the supporting members 23. The radial portions or leet 111 sustain the brim-wire-supporting members, and some ol the latter may also be sustained on the upright portions oil the L-shaped supports. I have shown herein both arrangements to illustrate clearly the elasticity or scope of the device.
The right-hand foot 14, Figs. 1 and 2, is shown as sustaining two rather short and only slightly curved brim-wi11e-supporting members Q8, each having a wire-seat 29 and a longitudinal slot 80, the two members 28, which are sustained by the foot, being adjustably connected therewith by a clamp device, such as has been described hereinbefore, the head Of the clamping-bolt beingI cut away at 2l (see dotted lines` Fig. 1) to cooperate with the shoulder 16. These members 28 can be moved in and out along the member la, and they can also be adjusted vertically and angularly with relation thereto and with relation to each other, a single clamping device serving to hold the pair in adjusted position. On the foot 1i (shown at the left in the drawings) I have illustrated two brini'wire-supporting members 21X, each having a wireseat and a longitudinal slot, as has been described of the members 28, but the members 28X are longer and have slightly more curvature, so that a peculiarly-shaped brim may be provided for. rlhese two members 28X are shown as adjustably connected with the up right shoulder 15 of the L-shaped support by a single clamping device of the character hereinbefore referred to, and said clamping device is also utilized to hold in place the adjacentcrown-wire-supportingmemberQB. As to the grouping or particular adjustment of the crown and brim wire supporting mem` bers, that is open to the convenience of the operator, so that whichever arrangement most readily adapts itself to the shape of the hat- .frame to be made can be adopted.
As the device is shown, set .for the formation of a hat-frame having' a peculiarly-shaped and flared brim at its front, l have mounted on the left-hand foot 14 a long supporting member 31, having several wire-seats 32 and an elongated slot 38. through which is passed the shank of one of the clam ping-bolts Q6, the member 31 being adjustable on the foot H independentlyl of any of the other supporting members carried by that particular support.
I find it is convenient at times to assist the operator in throwing' on or placing` the roundand-round wires by means of substantially radial guide-wires attached to the brim-wiresupporting members of a group and to the corresponding head-wire-s u pporting` member, and such a guide-wire is shown at g, Fig. 1, its outer end being attached in any suitable manner to the member 31, as by a thumb-nut 34, the wire being led through holes 35 in the two members 28X and 18 and tixedly secured to the latter, each wire being located just beneath and as close as possible to each of the wire- seats 29X and 22, respectively. Then the operator applies the 1ound-andround wire, it is thrown onto this guide-wire, and the latter serves to direct it quickly and easily up to the wire-seat of the particular supporting member which is to sustain it. Each groupof wire-supporting members on any one of the L- shaped supports may be provided with a guide-wire, or they may be used on only such groups as will facilitate the work. Then the frame is completed by the usual attachment of the fore and aft wires to the round-and-round wires in a manner well known to those skilled in the art, the frame can readily be removed by releasing' the locking device 11 and collapsing the base, whereby the wire-supporting members on the part 1 of the base will be moved a slight distance toward the members on the fixed part 2 of the base, so that the frame can be lifted olf without distortion or other dcrangement of its shape. By making the crown-wiresupporting members Q3 curved in the direction of their length they extend well inside of the headwire-supporting members 18 and provide a clear and open space for the operator to work in when laying the wires of the frame.
By reference to Fig. 2 it will be seen that the crownwire-supporting member 23 at the right is set out from the nearer side of the upright 15, this being necessary to clear the clamping-nut 20, which holds in position the head-wire-supporting member 18, and such offsetting of the. member 28 is effected by interposing a thick washer et() between the member and the nearer face of the upright 15. The same device is employed to offset the members 28X and 23 at the left, so that the clam ping-nut 2O for the head\vire-supporting member on that side will be cleared, thus avoiding any interference of parts when the supporting members are adjusted.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device for forming wire hat-frames, a base, a series of radial extensions thereon each provided with a rigid upright, separate head and crown wire supporting members adjustably and independently connected with each upright, said supporting' members each having a wire-seat at its upper end, adjustable brim-wire-supporting members having wireseats, and means to connect said members in adjusted position with the radial extensions.
2. In a device for forming wire hat-frames, a base, a series of rigid L-shaped supports thereon, the feet of said supports extending radially upon the base, separate head and crown wire supporting members adjustably and independently connected with the upright portion of each support, each member having' a wire-seat at its upper end, brim-wire-supporting members, and means to adjustably connect them with the L-shaped supports.
