Specification of Letters Patent.

Application iiled April 20, 1905. Serial No. 256,536.
.To (if/Z when?, it 11m/y con/ecrit:
Be it known that l, VVrLBnn T. lilwiNe, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berlin, in the county ol h/larshall and State o'l Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in. Lubricators for Street-Cars and l do declare the following to be a Vfull, clear, and exact description el" the iiivention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in lubricators :tor oiling or greasing the Vflanges of the wheels of street-cars, locomotives,'or the like, so that the track-rails may be lubricated at curves, switches, and other points.
The object of the invention is to improve and simplify the construction and operation oi devices oi.l this character, and thereby ren.- der the same more durable and ellicient in use and less expensive to manufacture.
l/Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists oll certain novel features of construction, coml'iination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a 'front elevation of my improved apparatus applied to a street-car, the .latter being indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a bottom. plan view of one end of a car, showing the application of the invention. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical longitudinal sectional view taken. on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a detail. view showing the mechanism Yfor operating the wheel-engaging brushes.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, l denotes the wheels of a car, locomotive, or the like 2, and 3 denotes my improved lubricating device. The latter comprises a pair of brushes 4, which are adapted to engage the lian oi the wheels l. and which are mounted upon the ends et diver-ging arms The opposite ends ol the latter are mounted, as shown at 6, to permit them to swing, and they are 'forced apart by a coil-spring 7, so that the brushes 4t are caused. to engage the wheels. The said arms are adapted to be drawn together to retract the brushes L by a retraeting-rod 8 through slots in which said arms 5 project. This bar 8 is slidably mounted and is loosely connected by a link 9 to one arm or member l0 of a double crank il. The other member or arm 12 ol' saidv double crank is conn ected by a link-rod 1.3 to
the lower end oi an operating-lever 13, the latter being provided with a hand operatingpawl 11i, which is adapted to coa-ct with. a rod l5, so that said lever may be rocked at any angle to permit the brushes 4l te be held either in or out ot contact with said wheels.
Uil, grease, or other lubricant is supplied to the brushes et through short discharge pipes or nozzles 16, provided. upon the outer ends of a transversely-disposed supply-pipe 17. The latter is connected at its center by means of a T-coupling 18 to a pipe 19, which. leads 'from an oil-supply tank 20, suitably mounted uponv the car. The pipes 1.8 and lt) are suitably supported, as shown at 2l and 22, and in the pipe 1 9 is located a controllingvalve 23, which is preferably ofA the usual. cylindrical type. This valve is operated by means of a crank 24, provided upon one oi: the outer ends of its shaft, and connected by a link 25 to the lower end ol an operatinglever 26. i
The construction, operation, and advantages oi my invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation. lt will be seen that by means of this device the motor-man or engineer may by operating the levers 26 and 13 readily lubricate the curves or other portions of a track over which his car or train is about to pass.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and. desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A lubricator `for cars or the like comprising a pair oi swinging arms, brushes upon said arms, a spring iior forcing said arms apart to hold said brushes normally in contact with the Yflanges of the car-wheels, means for moving said arms to retract said brushes, and means for supplying oil to said brushes.
2. A lubricator for wheels elt cars or the like, comlnising a pair of pivotally-mounted arms, brushes upon the ends of said arms, a spring lor forcing said arms apart. to hold said brushes iiormally in contact with the Vflanges olt the car-wheels, means lier moving said arms together to retract said brushes, an oil-supply tank, oil-pipes for conducting oil from. said tank to saidv brushes, a valve for controlling the flow et oil to said pipes and a lever ior operating said valve. Y
3. A lubricator ["or the wheels el'n cars er the like, comprising a pair of' diverging spring-actuated. arms,wl reel-engaging brushes upon the separated. ends of said arms, a slidl In testimony whereof l have hereunto set able retraetmg-bar engaged with said arms, l my hand 1n presence of two subscribing W11;- a double crank, a link eonneetmg said bar l nesses.
with one member of said crank, an operatngl ILBER T. EVING. lever7 and a link connecting said lever and Vitnessesz lhe other member of said crank, substan- W. A. MCCORD,
tially as described. G. L. HUNTER.
