TYPE-DISTRIBUTING APPARATUS.

To-all whon't it may concern.-
Beit known that I, ABBo'r AUGUSTUS Low, a citizen of the United States, residing at Horseshoe, St. Lawrence county, and State of New York,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Distributing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the form of distributing apparatus in which the lines of types are-successively brought into coincidence with the distributor or feeler channel through which they descend. It is desirable that as the upper end of the preceding line or column of type sinks below the floor of the galley upon which the body of the matter to be distributed is supported the next succeeding line shall be promptly and accurately forwarded, so as to rest upon the top of said last preceding column or line.
The object of the invention is to afiord delicate, accurate, and positive means for signaling and in setting in operation the type-lineforwarding mechanism; and the invention consists in the specific construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a distributer, showing the-parts essential in carrying out my invention, the parts being shown in position assumed just previous to the operation of the tripping mechanism; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the parts tripped. Fig. 3 is a plan of the tripping and line-for warding mechanism.
In the drawings, A represents the base or framework of the distributor, in which is formed the vertical type-channel V, into which the line of type are introduced successively and by which they are conducted to the type feeling and distributing mechanism. The framework A is formed with a vertical slot 4) to give access to and expose the type within the channel V. The types to be fed to the channel V are supported either directly upon the shelf a on the frame A or upon the galley G, pivotally connected to said shelf a. Adjoining the vertical slot 2; is the abutment B, against which the types T in the galley G are advanced by any well-knownmechanical expedient. The lines of type as they rest, re-
spectively, against the abutment B are forwarded automatically into the distributingchannel V by the line-forwarder L. This lineforwarder L is formed with avertical tongue Z and is supported upon the framework A by any convenient means. An intermittent reciprocatory movement is imparted to the lineforwarderL by means of a cam K, acting upon a stud 0' of the rock-lever R, which is pivotally connected to the frame at r, the upper end of said rock-lever R being pivotally connected to the line-forwarder by means of a link F. The groove is of the cam K is concentric for the greater portion of its extent, but is formed with four equally-distant eccentric portions 70, by which the stud r is thrown back to rock the lever R and retract the line-forwarder L into the position shown in Fig. 1, so as to admit of the advance of a fresh line of type against the abutment B. The cam K is formed directly upon the inner surface of the cogwheel P, rigidly mounted upon a stud 1), projecting from the face of the frame A. Upon the outer face of the cog-wheel P is formed or attached a rocker-cam Q, which engages with a roller (1 upon the end of a clutch-lever Q, pivotally supported on a stationary part of the frame, the roller q being held in contact with the rocker-cam Q, by means of a spring or equivalent (1. The cog-wheel P, carrying the two cams K and Q, is rotated intermittently by reason of its engagement with a pinion P, mounted on the power-shaft S, the pinion P being one-fourth the diameter of the cog-wheel P, so that one rotation of the pinion will equal one-fourth of the revolution of the gear P.
' Integral with the pinion. P is the disk D, carrying the spring-pawl (Z, the spring (Z tending constantly to throw the inner end of the pawl (Z into engagement with one of the peripheral notches s in the disk 8, rigidly secured to the power-shafts, the pawl (Z being held out of engagement with the disk .9 under normal conditions bya stop it upon the lower portion of the rock-lever N, pivotally supported upon the frame at a. The upper end of the rock-lever N is bifurcated to straddle a pin 0 on the bell-crank lever O, pivotally connected to the frame 0, the said bell-crank lever having an arm 0 projecting into the path of the finger w on the follower W. The bell cranklever O is held in its normal position against the stop 0 by means of a spring 0*.
The bifurcated end of the lever Q is formed with studs which engage with a groove 6, formed on the hub e of the concave clutchdisk E, which is splined upon the continuously-rotating shaft, so as to rotate therewith. The continuously-rotating shaft H is supported in suitable stationary bearings h and has loosely mounted upon it a reel-drum I, provided with a cone-disk i for engagement with the concave disk I. One end of the cord, chain, or equivalent 2" is attached to this drum or reel I. The other end of said flexible connection 5 after passing over supporting-pulleys w w being attached to the weight \V, traveling above the galley-supporting floor a. A fiat metallic spring is arranged to bear upon the periphery of the concave cone E, as will be seen by reference to Fig. 1.
In practice, the parts being in the position shown in Fig. 1, the removal of a type from the lower end of the column will cause the weight W, acting through its finger w and against the action of the spring a, to rock the end 0 of the bell-crank lever 0 downward, thereby causing the pin 0 to rock the lever N, throwing the stud 92. out of engagement with the end of the pawl (Z on the disk D. As soon as this occurs the spring d throws the inner end of the pawl (Z into one of the notches s in the periphery of the disk 8, which, being rigidly secu red to the shaft S, causes the sleeve (Z, pinion P, and disk D to rotate with said power-shaft S. As a result the pinion P sets the gear P in motion, one revolution of said pinion P causing one-fourth of a revolution of the larger gear P, thereby causing one of the eccentric portions k of the cam K to retract the pusher L to allow another line of type to be forwarded in front of the tongue Z under the action of the follower F to be in turn forwarded into the channel V by the return of the stud 4' to a concen tric portion of the cam K. The motion of the gear P and cam K is so timed as to withdraw the weight W before the advancing type. This is accomplished by the cam 7 2 which rocks the lever Q, and thereby causes the clutch E to couple the reel 1 to the rapidly-rotating shaft H. The lifting of the weight W allows the spring 0' to rock the bellcrank lever 0 back into its normal position, with the stud a in the path of the outer end of the pawl (Z, which when it encounters the stud n is thrown out of engagement with the disk 8 on the power-shaft S, thereby stopping the rotation of the large gear P until the parts are again tripped by the descent of the follower W.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In type distributing and forwarding apparatus, the combination of a type-line forwarder, of a follower arranged to rest upon a preceding line of type and to act directly and automatically on intermediate mechanism, for advancing and retracting said line-type forwarder, together with said intermediate mechanism, arranged and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
2. In type forwarding and distributing apparatus, the combination with the type-line forwarder, of a follower arranged to rest upon a preceding line of type, and to act directly and automatically on intermediate mechanism, for advancing and retracting said type-forwarder, said intermediate mechanism, and means for automatically raising the follower, for the purpose and substantially in the manner described.
3. In type forwarding and distributing apparatus, the combination of the vertical typechannel V, the abutment B, the reciprocating line-forwarderL. the rotatable wheel P, the cam K, the rocker R, the link F, the powershaft S. the notch-disk 8, formed with the pinion P, and disk D, the spring-pawl d, the rock-lever N, formed with the stud n, the bellcrank lever O, the spring 0", and stop 0 the whole arranged and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
4. In type forwarding and distributing apparatus, the combination of the vertical typechannel V, the abutment B, the reciprocating line-forwarder L, the rotatable wheel P, the cams K and Q, the rocker-lever R, the link F, the power-shaft S, the notch-disk s, the sleeve s, formed with the pinion P, and disk D, the spring-pawl d, the rocklever N, formed with the stud n, the bell-crank lever O, the spring 0", and stop 0, the rock-lever Q, clutch mechanism E, reel 1, flexible connections 2i, and weight W, the whole arranged and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
