TRANSFER-TICKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 8, 1905.
Application filed February 23, 1905. Serial No. 247,014.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM O. POPE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Transfer-Tickets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in transfer-tickets, more particularly what are termed time-limit transfer-tickets generally employed by streetrailroads, traction-companies, &c., for transferring from a car of one railway or branch line to a car of another railway or branch line at a given transfer-point; and the object thereof` is to enable the conductor or companys agent to issue the transfer to the passenger with as little trouble and in as short a time as is possible at the period of transfer.
Primarily the object of the invention is to provide a transfer-ticket with means hereinafter specifically referred to for indicating simultaneously when issuing the transfer a time limit for the fraction of an hour and whether said fraction of the hour is antemeridian or postmeridian, as the case requires.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel form of time-limit transfer-ticket hereinafter more specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front elevation. of a transferticket in accordance with this invention, and Fig. 2 is a like View of a modification.
A transfer-ticket in accordance with this invention comprises a body portion and a plurality of severable coupons provid ed with conventional indications for indicating the fractions of the hour within which the ticket after being issued is valid for passage.
Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings, l denotes the body portion of the ticket, having at one end a plurality of severable coupons divided into two series, one termed an antemeridian fraction-of-the-hour time-limit-indieating series, and the other a postmeridian fraction-of-the-hour time-limit-indicating series. The antemeridian time-limit-indicating series of coupons has conventional means for distinguishing it from the postmcridian time-limit-indicating series of coupons-for example, one series of coupons being of a different color from the other series. One series of coupons is separated from the other by a postmeridian even-hour-indicating coupon. The antemeridian fraction-of-the-hour time-limit-indicating series of coupons comprises three in number and -are indicated by the reference characters 2, 3, and 4, the postmeridian even-hour-indicating coupon by the reference character 4a, and the postmeridian fraction ofthe -hour time -limit -indicating series of coupons also comprises three in number, and are indicated by the reference characters 5, 6, and 7. The number of coupons of each series may be increased or diminished according to the time limit set for the use of the transfer-ticket. The time limit shown and to be hereinafter referred to is illustrated, by way of example, as well as the number of coupons in each series. The body portion 1 has a column of numerals-for example, l to 12-for indicating the even hours and which are designated by the reference character 8. This column of numerals may be arranged at any suitable point on the body portion: but, as shown, it is at that end opposite to the end to which the coupons are attached. The body portion l has also a line of abbreviations, as at 9, for indicating the months of the year and at each side of said line of abbreviations a line of numerals. as at l0, for indicating the days of the month, and the said body portion is further provided with a column of inscriptions to indicate the transfer-points, as at Il; with an inscription, as at 12, to indicate the name of the railroad issuing the transfer-ticket; with an inscription, as at 13, for instructions to the passenger; with the conductors number, as at 14, and with the transfer-number, as at l5. The coupon 2 is separated from one end of the body portion by a weakened line, as at'l, and has the following legends thereon: LA. M. l5 after hour punched, and which indicates to the passenger that when the transfer is issued and said coupon 2 is attached to the body portion that the transfer-ticket is valid for passage until fifteen minutes after the hour antemeridian. The coupon 3 is separated from the coupon 2 by a weakened line, as at I7, and has the same legend thereon as the coupon 2, with'the exception that 3 0 is used instead of l5, which indicates that if the ticket is issued with the coupon 3 attached the ticket is valid for passage until thirty minutes past the hour antemeridian. rIhe coupon 4 is separated from the coupon 3 by a weakened line, as at 18, and has the saine legends thereon as the coupons 2 and 3, with this exception., that in lieu of either 15 or 30 45 is upon the coupon 4, which indicates when the transfer-ticket is issued that it is valid for passage until forty-five minutes past the hour antemeridian. interposed between the coupon 4 and the coupon 5 is the postmeridian even hourindicating coupon 4, which is a different color from the coupon 4, so as to distinguish it therefrom, as well as from the coupons 2 and 3. T he coupon 41L is separated from the coupon 4 by a weakened line 4b and has the following legends thereon:
.Hour punched is even P. M. hour and which indicates that when the ticket is issued with the coupon 4" attached it will be valid for passage postmeridian until the hour punched. The coupon' 5, which is a different color from either the coupon 2, 3, or 4, is separated from the coupon 4 by a weakened line, as at 19, and has the following legends thereon P. M. 15 after hour punched and which indicates that if the ticket is issued with the coupon 5 attached it will be valid for passage until fifteen minutes past the hour postmeridian. The coupon 6, which has the same color as the coupon 5, is separated from the coupon 5 by a weakened line, as at 20, and has the same legends thereon as the coupon 5, with this exception, that "30 is used instead of l5 and which indicates that if the ticket is issued with the coupon 6 attached the ticket is valid for passage until thirty minutes past the hour postmeridian. The coupon 7 is of thesame color as the coupon 6 and is separated therefrom by a weakened'line, as at 21, and has the same legends thereon as the coupons 5 and 6; but in lieu of 30 or 15 45 is used instead and which indicates that if the ticket is issued with the coupon 7 attached the ticket will be valid for passage until forty-five minutes past the hour postmeridian. The coupon 7 is separated from a binding-stub 22 by a weakened line 23. lt may be well to state at this point that the coupons are issued in tablet form and consecutively numbered, the number being upon the body portion, as heretofore referred to. In lieu of separating each of the coupons from one another and the coupon 7 from the stub 22 and the coupon 2 from the body portion 1 by a weakened line,
as shown, they can be separated by a printed numerals said punched number associates with that coupon attached with the body portion at the point farthest away therefrom. The column of numerals 8 is also used for indicating that the ticket is valid for passage antemeridian up to the hour punched. For example, if all the coupons were severed from the body portion 1 and one of the numerals of the column of numerals 8 was punched it would indicate that the ticket is valid for passage up to the hour antemeridian indicated by the numeral punched. The body portion l is further provided with an enlarged numeral, as at 24, for indicating also the day on which the transfer-ticket is issued.
When using the transfer-ticket, the general points necessary to be punched are punched in advance of the issuance of the transferticket, so that all that is necessary for the conductor to do when issuing the ticket is to punch one of the numbers of the column of numerals 8 and to sever the ticket at the necessary point. lf it be severed, for example, at the line 17 and issued, it would indicate that the fraction of the hour is antemeridian, but if severed at the point 2O it would indicate that the fraction of the hour is postmeridian.
A',lherefore when issuing the transfer-ticket two things are accomplished, lone of which is the forming of the necessary time limit for which the transfer-ticket is valid for passage and the other -of which is whether said time limit is an antemeridian or a postmeridian one.
1n the modified construction shown in Fig. 2 but one series of severable coupons is employed, and the said coupons not only associate with the column of numerals for indicating the even hour, but also associate with the column of transfer-points,which is provided in such a manner that when punched will designate the coupons postmeridian or antemeridian, as the case may be. The reference character 25denotes the body portion, and 26, 27, and 28 denote the severable coupons` which are attached to the body portion and with each other. rlhe body portion 25 is provided with a line of numerals, as at 29, for example, l to 12? for indicating the even hours, and the function of said line of numerals is the same as that in connection with the line of numerals 8-that is to say, they associate with the coupons for forming a time limit. The body portion 25 is also provided with a column of inscriptions, as at 30, for indicating thetransfer-points. Each inscription is divided into two colors` so that said column of inscriptions will have half thereof in one color and the other half in another color, one of these colors when punched indicating antemeridian and the other of these colors when punched indicating postmeridian. Otherwise than that, as stated, the body portion 25 is the same as the body portion 1, the same reference characters being applied thereto. The coupon 26 has the following legends thereon: l5 after hour punched. The coupon 27 has the legends p30 after hour punched, and the coupon 28 has lthe legends 45 after hour punched. rlhe coupons 26, 27, and Q8 are separated from one another and from the body portion in a manner referred to in connection with the transfer-ticket shown in Fig. l, and the legends on the said coupons 26, 27, and 28 are for the same purpose as the legends upon the coupons showny in Fig. l. The coupons of Fig. 2 become antemeridian or postmeridian time-limit-indicating coupons, according to the way in which the column of inscriptions 30 is punched. If one color of said column be punched, then the coupons become antemeridian time-limit indicating, and if the other color be punched then the coupons become postmeridian timelimit-indicating coupons. Of course it will be assumed that the column of numerals 29 is also punched to associate with the coupon, which is attached with the body portion,'but farthest away therefrom. If all the coupons are severed fromV the body portion, the time limit is the same as that set forth in connection with Fig. l.
