To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK P. ORINER, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Fort WVayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trolley Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in trolley appliances; and the objectthere of is to afiord means for the automatic adjustment of the trolley-harp, so as to hold the trolleywheel in proper relation with the trolley-wire, and thereby prevent the wheel from jumping from contact therewith, especially when turning curves.
I accomplish my object by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a detail, partly in section, and showing the trolley-harp mounted in its supporting-bracket; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the method of mounting the trolleysupporting bracket.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views, and, referring v now to the same, 1 is a trolley-harp, and 2 is the supporting-bracket therefor. The said harp has a supporting-stem 3, connected atits lower end by means of a bolt 4, the said stem and harp being insulated from one another by suitable insulating material 5, which is .inserted between the top of the stem and the adjacent harp around the neck of the bolt and also between the head of the bolt and the harp. The stem 3 is mounted in the bracket 2 in a vertical position and suitable ball-bearings 6 are provided at the upper and lower ends of said bracket upon which said stem turns.
The bracket 2 has a forwardly-projecting arm 7, at the outer end of which is pivotally connected a trolley-pole 8. A secondary pole 9 is connected at its upper end to the lower' end of the bracket 2 by means of bolts 10, securedtherein. Both of said poles are pivotally mounted between sup porting-standards 11, which extends upwardly from the turn table 12. The lower end of the pole 8 has a depending extension 13 beyond its pivotal connection 14 with said standards, and a rod 15 is connected to said depending end 13 and extends rearwardly through a crosspiece 16, which is secured to said standards. The extending end of said rod has set-nuts 17 fixed thereon, and a spring 18 is interposed between said nuts and cross-piece 16. The said spring acts to hold the pole 8 toward its vertical position. It will be observed that because of the parallel and pivotal relation of the poles 8 and 9 the bracket 2 will be held at all times in a vertical position.
An electrical current-conductor 19 is attached at one end to the harp 1 and leads downwardly therefrom through the central bore of the bolt 4 and also through the stem 3, from whence it extends into and through the entire length of the pole 9. From the lower end of the pole 9 the conductor 19 may be led to and connected with any suitable contact device.
The stem 3 has a transverse slot 20 made in its side, and a screw 21 is secured in the bracket 2 with its inner end extending into said slot, and thereby the said stem and the harp mounted thereon are limited in rotative movement to approximately one-third of a revolution. A trolley-wheel 22 is mounted in the harp 1 in the ordinary manner.
In the use of this invention the trolleywheel 22 will tend to remain with its diametrical plane in vertical alinement with the trolley-wire, this being facilitated by holding'the stem 3 vertical at right angles to the trolley-wire.
