To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAooB SAMUnLs, a subject of the Queen of the Netherlands, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Holding Corks in Bottles, of which the following is aspecitication.
This invention relates to devices for retaining corks in position in the necks of bottles, and refers particularly to a cap or cage adapted to be secured over the mouth of the bottle for this purpose. In this instance the cap is made from sheet metal slitted and expanded in proper form to inclose the upper portion of the neck, suitable means being provided to secure the cap in position.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which this cork-holding device is formed. Fig. 2 is a side view of the completed device in position upon the neck of a bottle. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lower portion of the holder, illustrating certain details of construction.
In the production of a cork-holding device embodying my invention 1 provide a piece of sheet metal of suitable character and thickness, and by means of suitable dies I out from said sheet metal a blank such as is shown in Fig. 1, said blank comprising a central portion 1, an annular slitted portion 2, surrounding said central portion, and an outer band portion 3. The slits in the slitted portion 2 are curved on the arcs of concentric circles, and those of one circle overlap those of the adjacent circles in order that said slitted portion 2 may be extended or expanded into a meshed structure to form the sides of the cap. The band portion 3 is connected with the slitted portion at 4 and is provided with three openings 5, adapted to receive tangs 6, formed on the slitted portion 2. One end of the band portion 3 is reduced in width to form a tongue 7, adapted to enter an eye 8 in the other end of the band. By means of suitable dies the band portion 3 is bent at right angles with the central portion 1 and the slitted portion 2, said slitted portion expanded into the meshed structure shown in Fig. 2 and the ends of the tangs 6 inserted in the openings 5 in order to connect said bands with said slitted portion at a number of points.
In use the cap is slipped over the mouth of the bottle and the tongue 7 of the band portion 3 inserted into the eye 8, drawn tight, and clenched, as shown in Fig. 2. Said band portion fits around the neck of the bottle immediately below the head or enlarged upper end of the neck and holds the device in place. The central portion 1 extends across the mouth of the bottle and prevents the cork from being unseated by the expansion of gas or liquid within the bottle.
It is obvious that many changes may be made in the form of the device herein shown without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, wherefore I desire to have it understood that I do not wish to limit myself to the particular details herein set forth.
I claim as my invention-- 1. A cork-retaining device comprising a portion adapted to extend over the mouth of the bottle, sides of expanded metal, and a securing-band adapted to surround the neck of the bottle.
2. A cork-retaining device comprising a portion adapted to extend over the mouth of the bottle, sides of expanded metal integral with said first-mentioned portion, and a securing-band integral with said sides and adapted to surround the neck of the bottle.
3. A blank for a cork-retaining device comprising a central portion, an annular slitted portion surrounding said central portion, and a band portion.
4:. A blank for a cork-retaining device comprising a central portion, an annular portion surrounding said central portion, and a band portion connected with said annular portion, and having an opening therein, said annular portion having a tang adapted to be inserted in said opening.
