Be it known that I, LOUIS DREYFUS, a citizen of Switzerland, residing at 73 Kaiserstrasse,
Frankfort-On-the-Main, Germany, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in W eighing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for enabling the weights of balances to be set on and removed from the scale-pans without their requiring to be taken up in the hands, so that the standard weights are not exposed to wear and consequent diminution of their mass. To this end verticallymovable plates actuated by means of a hand lever or levers and system or systems of links and levers, are raised and lowered through the scale-pan so as to set on or remove the weights, while at the same time disks or plates are moved above the scale pan to indicate the amount of the weight taken up, or the arrangement may be such that the weights are raised from the ground or are supported pendently from above and released from their support.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, Figure 1 shows in end elevation the arrangement of links and levers and the hand-lever for raising and lowering the weight. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 a plan, of the same. Fig. 4 shows a detail. Fig. 5 is a plan showing a plurality of weights and means for placing and removing them as described with reference to Figs. 1'

Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a vertical rod 8, mounted in suitable guides t, so as to be adapted to be raised and lowered vertically. On the upper end of said rod 8 is secured a plate 19, provided with projections It), which plate is intended to support the weight g. The rod 5 is operated from a hand-lever it, through the intermediary of leversc, (Z, and d and links f and m. The levers d and d are keyed on a shaft (Z, which is rotatably mounted in a bracket Z). Between the hand-lever h and the lever 6 there is provided a sector 0, in the notches of which a springblade (0 is adapted to engage. Pivoted on the bolt connecting the lever and link we is a lever n, which lever n has guiding-rollers u at its free end. Between the said rollers may be moved one member 0 of a rod 0, which rod carries at its top a vertical plate 1", upon which plate a character designating the weight is marked. The scale-pan w of any suitable balance has orifices c, which allow the passage through of the support-plate p, but hold back the weight g, and at another place allow the passage of the indicator-plate r. A series of such link-and-lever systems is provided for the various weights alongside or one behind the other, as shown in Fig. 5. When the lever h is turned in counter-clockwise direction, the rod 8 is lowered to the dotted position shown in Fig. 1. The support-plate 19 must pass through the opening '0 in the scale-pan w, whereupon the weight g is deposited on the scalepan, Fig. 4. At the same time, however, the lever 71. swings upward, while its free end, with the rollers u, slides on the member 0 to raise the rod 0. In order that when in its highest position the weight-indicator 0 7 should not fall back, a pin a is provided on the lever to bear against the lever n. When the hand-lever h is turned back, the weight g is lifted up from the plate 1), being secured against falling by the projections 7c. The balancingis as a rule effected by adding or subtracting one or several weights from the total mass. Should none of the weights be required, then all can be raised together by means of one device, which removes them from the scale-pan. For this purpose each of the levers h, rotatable around the common shaft Z, has a tappet y. In its dotted position, Fig. 1that is, after turning down the lever it into the dotted positionthe tappet lies beneath the cross-bar 2, which is rigidly connected with a rod r0, mounted parallel thereto. On the outermost end of said rod x is the lever 90. When said lever 00 is turned in counter-clockwise direction, the rod 2 presses at the same time all the projecting tappets downwardthat is, all the weights are removed from the scale.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In weighing apparatus, in combination, a standard weight, a platform for supporting said weight, a scale-pan having a perforation therein, a hand-lever, and a system of links and levers for moving said platform to pass through the perforation in the scale-pan to deposit said weight on said scale-pan and to raise said weight from the scale-pan without contact of said weight with other objects than said scale-pan and platform, and an indicator rendered visible when said platform is moved to deposit the weight on the scale-pan, substantially as described.
2. In weighing apparatus, in combination, a scale-pan having a plurality of perforations, a number of platforms equal to the number of perforations, a like number of standard weights each supported by one of said platforms, a hand-lever and a system of links and levers for each platform adapted to move the platform through the perforation in the scalepan corresponding thereto to deposit the weight on the scale-pan and to raise said weight from the scale-pan without contact of said weight with other objects than said scalepan and platform, an indicator corresponding to each weight, and means for moving said indicator above said scale-pan when the corresponding weight is deposited on the scalepan, substantially as described.
3. In weighing apparatus, in combination, a standard weight g, a scale-pan w, a rod s, a platform carried by said rod and supporting the weight, a hand-lever /t, links f, m, and levers a, (l, 4,, for effecting vertical movement of said rod, as and for the purpose set forth.

5. ln weighing apparatus, in combination with the scale-pan 1.0, rods s, platforms 7), standard weights g, systems of links and levers raising and lowering said platforms, hand omrating-levers /z, a shaft 1 on which said levers it are keyed, tappets ;1 formed on said levers, a lever 12*, a rod :0 connected to said lever :11, and a rod .2 rigidly connected to said rod :0 and adapted to be raised and lowered, whereby all the weights are sinuiltaneously lifted from the scale-pan, as shown and described.
