I wish it to be understood that I do not care to limit myself to the use of hard-rubber, fibrous, semimetallic, or metallic materials in constructing my improved packing, and I do not care to confine myself specifically to the precise construction and arrangement of parts herein described, and illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, but may make such changes in the details of construction as will be permissible by the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A packing comprisinga plurality of packing-rings, arranged side by side within the packing-box or gland, each ring being composed of three sections, two of which are of rectangular form and with one beveled edge, the beveled edges constituting, when the rectangular sections are joined,a V-shaped groove between their adjacent faces, the third section being of triangular form and fitting in said V-shaped groove, a covering of fibrous material, said rings being so arranged in the packing-box or gland that the fiat sides of the rectangular sections will face the inner wall of the gland and the surface of a rod passing therethrough.
2. In a packing, the combination of three sections of solid material, two of which are of rectangular form, each having one of its inner corners beveled off, a third triangular section fitting between the said beveled corners of said rectangular sections, a substantially rectangular braided section of fibrous material arranged adjacent said rectangular sections,
and a braided covering of fibrous material.
